Annotations for Pressure

Lyric: I’m trapped and my back’s up against the wall
I see no solution or exit out
Annotation:
this could mean matt’s loss of motivation while he was writing this album. he sees no exit and is at a loss for ideas. he is being pressured to make music in the style of “old muse”. the fans are unappreciative of the new style that the band is experimenting with, there as he is backed up against a wall with no other ideas, as the ones he’s making are being frowned upon by fans.

Lyric: (Ah-ah-ah
Annotation:
These chorus bits are sung by the drummer of Muse,Dom Howard, in which this is the irst time DH’s vocals appear in any Muse single.

Lyric: The pressure’s growing exponentially
Annotation:
When something is growing exponentially, it means that it is constantly multiplying, and increasing faster and faster. In Matt’s case, he is being pressured more and more. Interestingly, this line was accidentally guessed by a Muse fan on twitter, much to the demise of Matthew Bellamy, who thought the song leaked https://twitter.com/mattbellamy/status/1043307273920159744

Lyric: I’m hitting the ground and I’m sprinting
I’m falling behind now I’m tuning out
Annotation:
As oppose to hitting the ground running. He’s ‘ falling behind’, not hitting expectations even though he’s giving it his all and he’s beginning to give up.

Lyric: Don’t push me (Ah-ah-ah)
 Don’t push me
Annotation:
Here Matt is talking about pressure from his fans to make music more similar to that of ‘old Muse’, something that he has complained about on multiple occasions. He has talked about this previously in one of his twitter Q&As: https://twitter.com/MattBellamy/status/1020461142341083137

Lyric: Let me get off the ground (Don’t push me)
To you I’m no longer bound
Annotation:
“Off the ground” almost suggests starting something new like Matt wants to do by experimenting with different styles and sounds. He doesn’t want to be “bound” to be making the same kind of songs he made from previous albums like Origin of Symmetry or Absolution.

Lyric: I’m trying to keep up to speed with you
Your lane changing is oscillating me
Annotation:
Matt is saying that the fans are impossible to please; as soon as he writes a song to try to cater to their tastes, their tastes have changed and he feels as though the work he put in to try to please them has gone to waste

Lyric: Pressure building
 Pressure building
 Pressure building
