Annotations for Sober

Lyric: It burns inside of me
Annotation:
On one side alcohol is materially burning his throat because of how concentrated it is; on the other, the consumption of alcohol makes him feel guilty, as he knows he is addicted to it, thus consuming it makes him burn up inside with guilt. It’s interesting to note that the association between guilt and fire is also present in  “Sunburn”: I’ll feel a guilty conscience grow She burns like the sun And I can’t look away

Lyric: You’re so solid
 You’re so solid
Annotation:
The alcohol is the speaker’s rock; it is that one solid thing in his life that he can rely on and can go back to. This strongly suggests his addiction, despite the apparently joyful tone of the song. This line is also a paradox, considering that alcohol is typically liquid.

Lyric: Arbourler, Jameson, I love you
 The single malts come burning
Annotation:
Aberlour and Jameson are two whiskey brands. Clearly the narrator is a fan!  Whiskey is a fairly strong alcoholic drink, so it burns the throat when it’s drunk.

Lyric: Wild Turkey’s been chosen
 Its caramel nose can smell me
Annotation:
Wild Turkey bourbon is renowned for its vanilla and caramel touch.

Lyric: Suppose it stands to reason
 That you would turn on me
Annotation:
The sucky thing about alcohol is the risk of addiction. The narrator appears to be under its control, despite all the good he associates with it.

Lyric: And you’re the only reason
 That I remain unfrozen
Annotation:
This could have two meanings: -The alcohol is keeping him from being an introvert and is talking to people he wouldn’t have being sober. Alcohol brings out a different side to people depending on how much they have.  -The warm feeling you get when you drink alcohol. the blood vessels near the surface of the skin get dilated, which allows warm blood to rush to that part of your body.

Lyric: Matured for years and imported
 Into my glass you poured it
Annotation:
As the whiskey ages, the taste of it becomes richer. At the point it’s ready for sale. Crown Royal  is matured in charred oak or white oak barrels.

Lyric: Royal Canadian blended
 The spicy aroma had mended me
Annotation:
Crown Royal Blended Canadian Whisky is one of the best selling whiskies in the world and it’s renowned for its smoother taste compared to other whiskies,  featuring vanilla and fruit notes. The smell of it has him in a good place.
