Annotations for Unravelling

Lyric: Our heaven is a lie
Annotation:
This song frequently blurs religious themes together with ideas reminiscent of The Matrix, suggesting that humanity felt disconnected from the true heaven and tried to create an Earthly utopia in the form of the simulation (either alluding to a literal simulated reality or the corporate control over our lives). However, this proved only a hollow imitation of true Paradise, and left people disconnected from each other as well as our Creator.

Lyric: An insect trapped in amber, I’m a fading pulse
Annotation:
The image of an insect trapped in amber implies being stuck in time, lifeless yet preserved. This symbolizes emotional paralysis — being unable to move on or escape a moment of emotional stasis.

Lyric: I’ll lie beside you and I’ll try to play along
Annotation:
Note the double-meaning of the word “lie”. The line is describing an intimate relationship of feigned amenability for ulterior motives, think Mata Hari.

Lyric: Redacted and revised
Annotation:
The concept of redaction was explored heavily in the Drones album. This is the striking of information from an official record. Revisions are when the information is altered. These actions are taken by intelligence agencies empowered by authorities to forward policies of either secrecy or subterfuge.

Lyric: This is a hymn for our love
With no God and no throne
Annotation:
The word hymn is used ironically to demonstrate a type of musical reverence that is not a form of religious worship – either relating to the connection experienced with a loved one or more generally the common bond that people share – the love that remains. In the context of religion, the “throne” is the seat of power of the godhead – His conduit of authority over the world. The loss of the throne is explained well by the dialogue from the Simulation Theory Theme – “Is there even a ‘they’ any more?”

Lyric: No longer happy dumb
Annotation:
The lack of comma or hyphenation means that this is a short phrasing of “happy when dumb” or “happy with being dumb”. Note that the original meaning of the word dumb was to be unable to speak.
