Annotations for Blood

Lyric: They can fix me proper with a bit of luck
Annotation:
I think it’s referring to taking the narrator out on a date. (feel free to edit/add to this) PROPOSED SUGGESTION: I believe The Patient is saying how the doctors are telling him that with just a little bit of luck he could get better. However, since he has cancer, it’s not going to be an easy fix.

Lyric: I gave you blood, blood, gallons of the stuff
I gave you all that you can drink, and it has never been enough
I gave you blood, blood, blood
I’m the kind of human wreckage that you love
Annotation:
This last chorus ties in perfectly with the theory that this song centres around the MCRmy (fanbase). The changing of the lyrics refers to how all the members feel drained after supplying “blood” (dark and dismal songs) to the fans. by changing “them” to “you” it is indicated that the song refers to the fans as they are the only ones who will listen to a hidden track. The final line of the chorus refers to how thefts idolised the members despite their flaws (although they are “human wreckage” they are “loved” by the fanbase. my annotations on the rest of this song add to this theory

Lyric: The doctors and the nurses, they adore me so
But it’s really quite alarming, ’cause I’m such an awful fuck
Annotation:
The singer is most likely saying that because of the doctors adoration of him, he is worried because he does not think he is a good person or he is so sick that he can’t be fixed and knows he’ll die. This line could also be a metaphor. The doctors could represent My Chemical Romance’s fans, saying that they adore him. But this admiration concerns him, as he doesn’t think highly of himself and compares himself to other celebrities. Following the album’s concept, it may also be that the character has done terrible things in the war, and is concerned at how he is being praised for doing so.

Lyric: Give them all that they can drink, and it will never be enough
Annotation:
The Patient is comparing the doctors and nurses in the hospital to vampires because of all of the blood they’ve drawn from him during his time there.

Lyric: (Oh, thank you)
Annotation:
He’s thanking the doctors for helping him, even though he’s ‘such an awful fuck’ This could also be a sarcastic thank you for the insult at the end of the last line.

Lyric: So give them blood, blood, blood
Annotation:
this song is a big metaphor… blood is his feelings, his love, his everything. Everyone wants it…but they never give back. lose all your “blood” and you die…Or get really depressed, with no friends.

Lyric: A celebrated man amongst the gurneys
Annotation:
He spends a lot of time being wheeled about on carts and stretchers (gurneys), and he is so well-regarded by the hospital staff because of it.

Lyric: Grab a glass, because there’s going to be a flood
Annotation:
Because he is sick, The Patient has spent so much time in the hospital that this line can be read almost sarcastically. He’s given pretty much everything (emotion, money, etc.) because he’s at the mercy of his cancer. Therefore, why not just get it over with and take what’s left? He’s exhausted from the struggle, and when it’s over the doctors will collect their bill and that will be it.

Lyric: So give them blood, blood, gallons of the stuff
Annotation:
“Blood” is referring to The Patient’s time spent in the hospital. He is so close to death has already spent so much time there, and the doctors love him for it because of the money they will make.

Lyric: And they love me for it, honestly, I’ll be here for a while
Annotation:
The Patient believes the doctors are only fond of him because they know he won’t get better. They only like him out of pity, and the fact that they’ll make money off him.

Lyric: I can’t control myself because I don’t know how
Annotation:
He is having behavioral issues in the hospital Gerard has also been open with the fact that he has a fear of needles. When you give or have blood taken, it can be a very bad experience for someone with this phobia. It can be minutes of a needle in your arm for blood, unlike a vaccine that is only a few seconds. The speaker can’t control himself for the blood to be taken because he does not know how, with his phobia.

Lyric: Send you roses when they think you need to smile
Annotation:
Following the concept of the album, someone is trying to make The Patient feel better. They know he’s dying, and the only thing they can think of to cheer him up are some flowers. This could be talking about how The Patient knows the doctors are only keeping him alive for the money they’ll make off him, and all their notions of kindness are painfully fake.

Lyric: [Verse 1]
Annotation:
After a minute and thirty seconds, the secret bonus track begins. It is muffled to give it an old timey feel.

Lyric: Well, they encourage your complete cooperation
Annotation:
This line could be referring to two things. The first is from a medical standpoint. Earlier in The Black Parade, cancer is mentioned. During chemo or the drawing of blood, doctors encourage you to cooperate since it’s for your benefit. Alternatively, this line could be referring to the band’s music. You have to go along with what the industry wants. They can’t force you to do it, but they encourage it. The fan-base can also be brought into this, as it is likely the band had to make choices based on what their fans would want.
