Annotations for Summertime

Lyric: (Don’t walk away, don’t walk away, don’t walk away)
 Don’t walk away
Annotation:
He is saying that he doesn’t want to be left alone.

Lyric: Every single day when people try
And put the pieces back together
Annotation:
When you see such harsh things when you are a child your whole life could be affected. He is scared that his experiences with relationships as a child may have made him cynical, even fatalistic towards them.

Lyric: And carry all this broken bone through six years down
In crowded rooms and highways I call home?
Annotation:
Life on tour can be demanding. MCR reached a new level of fame six years before Danger Days in 2004, after the release of Three Cheers, surpassing their debut album by almost double almost immediately after release. The band stayed at the top since then, until their split in 2013. During this time, the band had many struggles. Gerard talks about not having a home in an interview, saying, [I’m homeless] when we’re off tour. I’m currently residing in hotels or on my parents’ couch. […] But now I want to be in Jersey near the band. We work too hard, so I want to stay around everybody. After the band ended, Frank Iero had tons of free time on his hands. He then started a solo project, but when asked which he preferred, he commented, Three months ago, I had a lot of time on my hands and I was very, very unhappy. Now, I’ve got no time on my hands at all. While I don’t know if I’m happier, I do know that I don’t have time to be unhappy

Lyric: How long until we
Find our way in the dark and out of harm?
Annotation:
Maybe a call-back to the line in the opening verse “when the lights go out will you take me with you”. the lights are out, so it’s dark, and they are trying to find a way away from the crowds and media.

Lyric: When the lights go out, will you take me with you
Annotation:
Gerard is probably refering to his or Lyn-z’s conserts ending. Asking her, when the lights go out, will she be there to help him get away from the couds for a while.

Lyric: Just to smash them down
Turn my headphones up real loud
 I don’t think I need them now
’Cause you stop the noise, and—
Annotation:
a lot of people, including myself, use music to distract them from the outside world or from any situation in life that is hard to deal with. just grab your headphones and turn the music up so loud that you cant hear anything else. when he says “i think i need them, now could you stop the noise.” he is saying, he needs that love back, he needs something powerful enough to distract him from this world. and then he finds her. they have a love that can distract each other from any of the hate in the world. it acts like the music did.

Lyric: You can run away with me anytime you want
Annotation:
These lines reference words that both Gerard and his wife Lyn-Z wrote on their arm and neck, respectively, before concerts. Lyn-Z wrote hers first, and Gerard’s acted as a response.

Lyric: Your scraped-up knees, and—
Annotation:
Lyn-Z, wife of MCR’s frontman Gerard Way, is known for falling on her knees while performing in her band Mindless Self Indulgence. It’s no surprise that she ends up with scrapes and bruises since she is famous for doing things such as backbends while playing her bass.

Lyric: Or you can write it on your arm
You can run away with me anytime you want
Annotation:
When Gerard and Lindsey started dating during the Projekt Revolution tour in 2007, they took to writing messages on each other in Magic Marker “Run away with me” “Anytime you want”

Lyric: Is something I can’t know ’til now
’Til you picked me off the ground
With brick in-hand, your lip-gloss smile
Annotation:
This line describes Gerard Way’s wife, Lyn-Z Way, who is constantly wearing bright red lip-gloss. Way has stated that the song was written about Lyn-Z. The chorus itself was inspired by the couple’s unique habit of writing on their bodies. This is best known by their notorious gigs, where “run away with me” was written on Lyn-Z’s arm, and Way had “anytime you want” on his neck. Together, these two lines make up emotional heart of the song and feature in the chorus.

Lyric: If you stay, I would even wait all night
 Or until my heart explodes
Annotation:
If she stays with him, through the hardest time of his life, then he would wait all night long for her (this could also be taken that he would wait “forever” for her), because he loves her so much. He’d also wait until his heart “explodes” from his love for her – suggesting he loves her so much his heart can’t hold it all. This would also leave him dead; he would wait until he cannot wait anymore, dying from how much he loves her. Basically, he’d either wait all night for her to love him, or until he dies of a broken (in a sense)/bursting heart.

Lyric: Terrified of what I’d be
As a kid, from what I’ve seen
Annotation:
When you see such harsh things when you are a child your whole life could be affected. He is scared that what he saw may have turned him into a monster.
