You know that scene where Jon says that he won’t look into Basira’s head and hasn’t and he says is it so surprising that coming into a position of ultimate power would cause him to make that decision and then Basira and Martin are like ‘yeah…yeah it is’? (That is some rough paraphrasing, I know. Correct me if I made any big mistakes in my summary.)

Well, when I read the transcript, it seemed like it would be surprising. (I can’t remember, but Jon may even say that in irony. Maybe not.) But when I actually listened to the episode, it didn’t seem surprising.

Because Jon…I think he knows that with great power comes great responsibility. There’s a certain type of person that comes into power that sees that they have a responsibility for it. Probably they didn’t choose it, as people who want power generally don’t tend to be the right people for the job. (Also potentially a big theme of TMA, now that I think about it.)

Jon put all those people into hell, basically. Unwillingly, of course, but he did, and he feels bad about it. Of course he’s going to be careful with this power. He probably doesn’t even want it, except that it keeps Martin safe. (And he might like the Knowing thing a little bit, but that’s kind of conjecture.) So for him, no, it’s not surprising. (Also, he was trying to some degree to control his power before the Change anyway. Anyone who says it’s surprising that Jon wouldn’t look inside people’s heads (especially after being asked not to!) does not know him. At least not well.
