I have the headcanon that if Jon still has his powers Somewhere Else (this is already a headcanon in of itself, but bear with me), he learns to soften them in a way.

So if there’s something someone half wants to say, like they don’t want to say it but they need to, he can be like ‘do you want to talk about it?’ and it’ll come out easier. He gives them the choice, not compelling but just making it easier for them to talk about something. Using the Eye as something that eases instead of pulls.
