You know how the historical statements never hit quite as hard? I think an in-universe explanation is that the fear is too old. Like, it’s gotten stale. Jon can’t retell their fear as well when they’re long dead.

This is also kind of my explanation for why that episode about the ghost soldiers who deserted and are in a cave is so weird. The fear got stale and doesn’t work as well anymore.
