I haven’t contributed to a zine before - how does this work?
Once all applications have been reviewed, accepted creators will get an invite to the Discord server to have a central place to hang out, swap ideas, share encouragement, and ask questions. Within the content guidelines you’re free to produce whatever you like - if you have questions about suitability, contact a mod and we can discuss your ideas.
The zine will be released under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license, per Rusty Quill guidelines; while of course all work you create remains your own under the terms of that license, we do ask that you refrain from posting it publicly until 3 months after print and digital sales have closed.
How will you select from the applicants?
That depends on how many applications we get! We want to keep the zine down to a reasonable size, so if there are dozens of applicants we can’t take everyone. We’d like to see some evidence that applicants have produced content before (doesn’t have to be for this ship, or for a zine, but we would like this not to be your first fic/fanart) and that they’re confident they can meet deadlines. After that we’ll choose a range of artists and writers that give us a range of different styles in the finished product.
What kind of content are you looking for?
We’re looking for both fanart (max two pages for comics/spreads) and fanfiction (max 2,000 words)! We’re also interested in stickers, charms, or other extras, and we’re still looking for cover art - if you’re an artist and you’d like to work on those, please let us know in your application.
If you have another idea (poetry? meta? Magnus Institute library cards?) run it by a mod and/or mention it in your application, we’re happy to entertain more unusual ideas too!
Will you consider NSFW works?
Yes! We will consider all ratings. Please do not apply to participate if you are under 18.
Due to the nature of the ship dynamics, the zine will also be considered a Choose Not To Warn space, but will likely include works featuring dubious consent, coercion, manipulation, or noncon. While creators will be unlikely to interact with other creators’ work during the process, if you are uncomfortable being part of a project that contains these themes, please keep this in mind when applying.
What will the finished product look like?
At minimum we will produce both print and digital versions of the zine, with a limited print run based upon preorders. The cost of a print copy should not exceed $20USD. We’d also like to offer additional tiers with extras like stickers, charms, prints, etc, depending on artist interest and availability. Further details about extras and pricing will be available once contributors are confirmed.
Where will the profits go?
All proceeds in excess of production and shipping costs will be donated to Doctors Without Borders COVID-19 Crisis Fund.
