I actually think it’s extremely important from a character standpoint that Jon and Martin bicker so much throughout Season 5.

From the standpoint of Martin’s character: Martin is someone who’s always been entangled by The Lonely. When we first met him he was passive, and kind, and really just wants to be liked despite Jon’s irrational annoyance.

That’s why it’s so important that he learns to stand up for himself and advocate for his own feelings. Not just to anyone either, but to Jon, who he’s always wanted the approval of.

If Martin bit his tongue and just went along with everything he wanted, then it would show that he hasn’t grown a lot since the early seasons where he put “keeping the peace” over his own feelings. in this case his loud disagreement is a good thing because it means that he’s grown into someone who’s comfortable standing up for himself in his relationship.

From the standpoint of Jon’s character: Jon need’s someone to be willing to disagree with him in Season 5.

At the start of season 5, Jon has basically given up. He’s wasting away in the cabin, blaming himself for the end of the world and thinking that he can’t fix it. It’s Martin’s willingness to contradict Jon and go “I think there’s still hope. I think there’s still a world to be saved,” that pushes him to get out of bed.

Then during the apocalypse when they start disagreeing on how to handle saving the world and the merits of vengeance, Jon still needs to have those disagreements. Both because those new relationship hurdles are a reminder of the human connection he’s working to keep, but also because it forces him to consider a perspective that’s not his own.

The Eye is chipping away at his humanity, and everyone else in the apocalypse is treating him like he’s a God. He DESPERATELY needs someone to remind him “ Hey. You aren’t inherently right because you’re The Archivist. Let’s also consider other people’s points of view,” due the situation.

From a character standpoint I think a lot of Martin and Jon’s arguing is actually a really interesting showcase to where they both are as people by Season 5 and indictive of their character development. Also they’re in the apocalypse and that totally contributes.

I was fandom adjacent to The Magnus Archives for years before actually watching the series, so here’s a list of things I thought about TMA when I only knew the series from mutual posting:

A: I thought Anabelle Cane was far more of an ally to Jon and Martin then she ended up being. Like, I thought she joined the main crew at one point and TBH I think this is thing I’m most disappointed that I was wrong about.

B: Someone called Agnes Montague a ghost in what was probably a metaphorical sense and I thought it was a literal sense so I spent the whole series waiting for Agnes to show up as a ghost. Then when Gerard Keay showed up as a ghost I genuinely thought she was going to be part of the skin book for some reason.

C: I thought The Hunt was the fear of animals and nature. Like wolves or poisonous snakes, or mudslides, or getting lost in a forest.

D: I also thought The Lonely was the fear of people and was basically the manifestation of social anxiety.

E: I thought Daisy was in a monstrous wolf form for like 70% of the series, turns out the people I was following just really liked Season 5. Or they were furies.

F: I thought The Admiral was The Institute’s cat. I thought he was a stray that they all took care of.

G: Everyone’s fanart’s of the character’s are so consistent that I figured an official reference had been made for them at some point and I was like “I can’t wait to finish TMA and go see the canon references that everyone inspires their art of off!” Turn’s out the fandom was just going off vibes, and quite frankly they’re the best vibes of all time because yeah they just seem like they’d look like that.

H: I knew about Sasha and Tim’s fates, but I thought Sasha died in the Season 2 finale and Tim died in early Season 5. I was NOT ready.

I: I thought Gertrude got confirmed as bisexual and I don’t even remember which post made me think that. It might have just come to me in a dream, who knows?

J: In terms of ships I thought Daisy/Basira and Doorkeay were canon, while Georgie/Melanie and Jon/Martin were just popular fandom ships. I think my jaw genuinely dropped twice during Season 4 when I realized what was going canon and what wasn’t.

19th and Last Place: Julia Montauk/Jonah Magnus - No.

18th: Human! Helen Richardson/Mary Keay - Any ship with Mary Keay was going to end up at the bottom of the list because …well I mean, it’s Mary Keay. However, I will also note that the last thing Human! Helen would want is to be tangled up in all the fear nonsense, so I don’t think this would work out. Though I do think the concept of Helen becoming Gerry’s Step-Mom could be funny.

17th: Daisy Tonner/Mikaele Salesa - I don’t dislike this ship per say, but that’s mostly because when I try to think about it my brain rejects the concept as if it’s genuinely unfathomable. So…0/10. What is going on?

16th: Trevor Herbert/Adelard Dekker - This would be a disaster but I would watch their first date like it was a messy reality show.

15th: Simon Fairchild/Not-Sasha - I do dislike this as a ship, in fact I hate this as a ship. However, I can’t rank it lower because realistically I think Simon would find novelty in a shape shifter who uses their form to con people about their identity. I still hate it though.

14th: Oliver Banks/Hezekiah Wakely - This is INTERESTING from a narrative standpoint. Hezekiah can’t sleep and Oliver dreads his dreams. Hezekiah finds peace in digging graves and Oliver is an Avatar of The End. Hezekiah uses his letters to Nathaniel to confide in someone about the fears and I’m pretty sure that Oliver is the avatar that gives the most statements about his situation. (Outside of the main cast.) I don’t really like this but it has got me thinking.

13th: Georgie Barker/Nikola Orsinov - I don’t like this as a ship, but it does make me think of a ton of interesting story idea’s right off the bat. Like, what if Georgie was working with Nikola throughout Season 3? What if Nikola took interest in Georgie because her lack of fear made her less likely to notice something strange? I don’t know. This would be a bad ship in canon but thinking about all the story avenues it could create makes me interested in any potential fanfictions.

12th: Gertrude Robinson/Distortion! Helen Richardson - It’s insane that both of Gerard’s Mother figures got spun with a version of Helen, but that’s not the point. I think this could be fun in an AU. The lack of trust Gertrude would have with her VS knowing that having an Avatar so close to her is an advantage. The way Gertrude would more than likely realize that Helen wasn’t friend but the way she also might see that as a good thing that they can’t get too close. The guilt Gertrude would have toward The Distortion for what happened with Michael and the disdain The Distortion would have toward her for what happened with Michael. This could be really complex so I like this from that standpoint.

11th: Jane Prentiss/Rosie Zampano - What the hell. Sure.

10th: Gerard Keay/The Real Elias Bouchard - This ship is a timeline nightmare but I do like the concept of it. Maybe it would work in an AU where Elias takes a job from Gertrude instead of Jonah.

9th: Jude Perry/Sarah Baldwin - They would make each other worse but Jude would be into that.

8th: Season 5 Full Avatar Jonathan Sims/Agnes Montague - This would be devastating but I do kind of want to cry to it. Like, they both want different destines then what they get, but they’re also both prone to answering the door when fate comes knocking. I will say that I do think they would find solace in sharing very similar burdens. However, at the end of the day I think they would make each other sad and subconsciously more complacent to the their fears. Though I do love the sheer angst potential of this and that’s why I’m ranking it highish. I do love a well-written doomed romance and I am seeing the potential for that here.

7th: Peter Lukas/Jurgen Leitner - Okay. Look. I hate how well this works in canon as much as the next guy. I really do, but like…I can see it. This is a once every five year situationship built on mutual loneliness.

6th: Timothy Stoker/Distortion! Michael Shelley - I didn’t think I had any feelings about this but then I remembered that Tim and Michael are both angry assistants who feel betrayed by their boss and are tied to the fears whether they want to be or not. Honestly?? I really like this concept. I want to listen to them have a conversation.

5th: Jared Hopworth/Breekon and Hope - This works in my head. A little too well. Jared “I worked in the mafia, at a gym, and as a florist” Hopworth could 110% find tasks to keep Breekon and Hope entertained.

3rd: - Season 2 Jon/Human Michael Shelley - Naive Michael Shelley who doesn’t know what’s going on teaming up with Season 2 Jon who knows something is going on and rapidly spiraling about it would be a really neat plotline. And if they kiss a few times then who’s to stop them??

2ed: Annabelle Cane/Basira Hussain - This ship would make them both worse but they would have the entire plot of TMA wrapped up in five minutes. Absolute power couple who uses their combined wits to achieve their goals.

1st: Melanie King/Sasha James - This is just a genuinely good ship. Despite only meeting once Melanie liked Sasha enough to remember her and their talk about haunted pubs. If for some reason someone said to me “Pick and ship for Melanie that’s not with Georgie,” then I would go with Sasha. So I love this one. 10/10.

Daisy, Gerry, Anabelle, and Georgie, always play rock in rock, paper, scissors.

Jon, Sasha, Basira, and Gertrude always play paper in rock, paper, scissors.

Tim, Martin, Distortion Michael, and Melanie, always play scissors in rock, paper, scissors.

Every Magnus Archive character could be friends with Gerard Keay if the fandom tries hard enough.

Something I think we don’t talk about a lot was that Gertrude was playing with the idea of sacrificing Gerard to stop the circus. That’s already a lot to take in, but something I think that’s important to what she says is the way she structures her sentence.

The first, and main, reason she lists to not sacrifice Gerard is his lack of strong connection to The Eye. The second reason she lists it that she’s grown fond of him. The “read between the lines” of it all is that she doesn’t want to sacrifice him, but the sentence is formatted in a way that makes it seem like her feelings aren’t a priority compared to the logical logistics of it all.

Now, I think could be read two ways with a character as complicated as Gertrude: You could read this as Gertrude putting her logic before her emotion and being willing to sacrifice Gerard if the cards fell that way. Which isn’t exactly a stretch when you think of everything that happened with Michael.

However, I think the second way you could read this is that Gertrude isn’t fully comfortable accepting that she doesn’t want to sacrifice him after a life of making hard calls and is therefore padding her real reason (affection) with logic because it makes it easier to swallow. I especially think this interpretation is interesting because Gertrude does admit that she knows Gerry has a connection to The Eye yet she doesn’t throw out the idea of strengthening it to help with ritual. In fact, she just drops the topic entirely which doesn’t seem like the norm for her.

This is super interesting dialogue considering how fast the series moves on from it, and while the series moved on from it, it’s been living in my mind rent free.

Magnus Archive Spin The Wheel Game: Eye-Apocalypse Edition.

If you thought working at The Magnus Archive couldn’t get worse, you were wrong! It’s the Eye-apocalypse and you need to survive. Thankfully you and a few other characters were in the safe house when everything started.

Here’s an Magnus Archives character idea: An Avatar of The Lonely who really likes fake plants.

Their origin story as to how they became an avatar is that they realized the plant they had been watering for months was fake and honestly didn’t mind it. They just bought more fake plants because they were easy to take care of.

They’re a very under climatic character.

“The girl with the green ribbon” is such a Stranger aligned story.

If you don’t know what the story then the gist of it is that an unnamed man and women start to date. The entire time they’re together the women wears a green ribbon around her neck, but the man doesn’t really pay any mind to it. It’s only when they get married and she wears the ribbon to their wedding and to their bed does he realize that he’s never seen her without it. So he asks her why she always wears her ribbon and she refuses to give an answer.

Now the end of the story varies widely on where you read it: But in some interpretations the man becomes furious that his wife is hiding a secret from him and begins to resent her. She gets sick and he refuses to take of her out of spite, which she confronts him about. He says that he can’t trust someone who won’t even be honest with him about why she wears a ribbon, and she says if that’s the case then he can take the ribbon off. So he does….and her head rolls right off her neck.

If you took the horror out of what the ribbon was for, then I still think there’s an underrated psychological horror aspect to the women’s husband starting to go crazy wondering what his wife is keeping from him.

I think that could easily translate into a Stranger story where a man starts to doubt who his wife even is because of what’s (on the surface) a slightly odd fashion choice.

IDK I just saw the story again recently and thought “this could very well be a Stranger statement with just a few minor tweaks,” and so I had to immediately post my thought so it’ll stop rotating in my brain like a microwave.

I think the reason I like Mikaele Salesa so much is that he falls into a very specific trope I love that is: Criminal is a pretty decent boss all things considered.

Despite not being a good person, Salesa does seem to try and look out for his workers. He’s honest with them about how dangerous retrieving the camera will be and he gives everyone a honest out of the situation before it happens. Which sure isn’t something someone like Elias would have done if he were in a similar situation.

He also gives his chiefs one of his artifacts for a reasonable price when he notices him eyeing it instead of selling for a large price to someone like Mary Keay who would drop a lot of cash for a fear artifact.

I honestly just think Salesa is a fun character because morally he’s awful, but he also seems like the type of guy who would draw the line at bureaucratic evil. Any of the main cast would have been better off working for him than Elias. I bet Salesa is even open to union’s.

The Magnus Archives theory I have that I think is the most true is: The reason Oliver dreamed of Gertrude at her desk instead in the tunnels is because her being at her desk is representative of how all the decisions she made as Archivist is really what ended up killing her.

What happened in the tunnels was due to Gertrude’s two biggest mistakes catching up to her. For one, she didn’t have anyone who could have helped her pull off her plan because all of her allies were dead or gone, mostly directly or indirectly by her hand. The other thing is that she had underestimated Elias for years despite knowing that he was Jonah Magnus. Both of these mistakes directly lead to her death, and both of these mistakes were made because she felt her role as an Archivist was to save the world above all else. Even if that meant using her friends as pawns or letting the Elias stuff go to focus on the rituals.

Gertrude died because she was The Archivist, and narratively I think that was the point Jon was supposed to take away from Oliver’s statement. That’s why her actual death and dream death doesn’t match up in a literal sense despite matching up in a symbolic sense.

(Also: Oliver’s dreams do tend to show the root cause of death instead the direct cause of death. In “Grifter’s Bone” he shows concern over a women’s ears, only for her later to die due to blunt force trauma that is driven by listening to a cursed band. So his dreams do seem to value overall cause instead of direct cause.)

I headcanon that Gerard Keay doesn’t always wear his goth aesthetic. I mean, he does if he’s outside anywhere, but at 10PM during a quiet night in he’s not as worried about it as one might think.

This plays into a Doorkeay headcanon of mine that’s just the concept of Distortion Michael deciding to pay Gerry a visit at 1AM and being getting genuinely shocked and unsettled by seeing him dressed down. Just:

Distortion Michael: “What are you, and what did you do with my book burner?”

Gerard who is wearing a bright purple hoodie, light blue pants, and a has a pink scrunchie in his hair: “I feel like you’re being very dramatic right now.”

Jon after doubting Tim and Martin to the point it causes a rift in their relationship: “Wow. It sure is hurtful that someone I thought was an ally was actually suspecting me.”

No but I think this moment is a really interesting one for both Jon’s character.

For Jon this moment is one where he has all the suspicion he’s been eager to give to other people thrown back at his face, and instead of having any take away’s from it, he rationalizes Basira’s motivations instead of truly acknowledging the hurt he feels. He justifies what she did by saying that he hasn’t been stable in the last few months. Then even uses word “bit” to lesson the impact on his emotional state, but it’s clear that it got to him.

I think Jon’s reaction to Basira’s deception shows that he’s rationalized suspicion so much he can’t even break free from that mindset when he’s confronted head on with how hurtful it can be. He’s just that far gone down a rabbit hole of distrust, and it’s very sad watching him rationalize a thing that’s hurt him because he’s hurting others and rationalizing it in the same way.

Season 2 Jon will always be one of the most frustrating yet tragic characters to me. He’s just so well-written.

I’m thinking about a “Michael Shelley is spit out of The Spiral AU” where being The Spiral changes Michael in a way where he’s angry, and violent, and a chronic liar who has had his morality completely skewed to the point where even “People shouldn’t be eaten in a monster’s hallway,” is a controversial topic with him.

I’m thinking about a Michael Shelley who can’t be trusted during The Circus ordeal because he’d sell out the entire Institute and everyone in it for less than nothing. Yet, he still can’t help but care a little because he’s still human at his core.

I’m thinking about a Michael Shelley who is friends with Tim and Melanie because he see’s his anger in them, but dislikes Martin because he see’s the loyalty he once had in him and can’t stand it anymore than he can stand the fact that Jon seems to genuinely care about his helpful assistant.

I’m thinking about a Michael Shelley who has to relearn the concept of humanity and has an arc that parallels Jon’s. Every time Jon loses a piece of his humanity, Michael gains some of his back through his connection with Tim, Melanie, Georgie, statement givers, and sometimes Jon depending on the day.

To the point where in Season 5 Michael chooses to blind himself instead of ruling a dominion while Jon gives into the same urges Michael did a long time ago. And Michael is angry again. But this time not AT Jon, but FOR Jon and all the things he’s gone through.

I’m super curious how the concept of sleep masks work with eye avatars.

Would wearing an sleep mask work like blinding yourself does and cut off the connection to The Eye? Would that be a realistic alternative to using an awl? Or would The Eye’s connection be strong enough to compel them to take it off? Or would it depend? Like, Season 1 Jon theoretically could have worn an sleep mask successfully, but Season 4 Jon would have had to have taken it off?

I’m overthinking this probably but it is interesting to think about whether or not a sleep mask would have solved a majority of the series’ problems.

Siblings in TMA kills me because what do you mean that Laura and Alena Popham entered Lost John’s Cave on the same day Danny Stoker disappeared? (June 14th) What do you mean that they both went missing under the Earth? What do you mean that Alena plays a role in her sister’s death by saying “take her not me,” while Tim unknowingly encourages Danny to get into urban exploration and then blames himself for Danny’s death because he froze?

What do you mean the other sibling statement in the series is about a brother who got his brother stuck on a ladder for eternity by playing a cruel prank? And what do you mean that this is a parallel to Laura Palmer who also put her own feelings before her siblings?

What do mean the recurring theme with siblings in this show is: One of the siblings unknowingly contributing to knocking over a domino that lead’s to their siblings death. That’s so devastating.

In a world of fears that manifest into real monsters, people still probably have very mundane fears. So here are my headcanon’s on the more normal fears the TMA characters have that aren’t related to their day to day fear dealing.

Jon is terrified of public speaking. It’s a bit ironic considering how much he makes statements, but statements can be redone while mispronouncing a word or having a vocal crack at the wrong time can’t. At least in Jon’s mind. He wants people to take him seriously so the idea of having a flub in public is terrifying.

Peter Lucas is scared of frogs. He found one in his cabin bed one time right after boarding and it jumped at him. He hasn’t liked them since.

Melanie King is scared of vomit or vomiting. No “real” reason as to why, it’s just really gross.

Before the college incident happened Georgie was terrified of the concept of The Headless Horseman. It was one of the first scary stories she read as a kid and it stuck with her so deeply that just the sound of a horse walking around at night could freak her out a little.

Gerard Keay doesn’t like horses. He doesn’t like that something is that large and NOT a fear entity. Their eyes being on the side of their face freak him out too.

Martin is scared of thunder. He doesn’t like loud sudden noises and that’s basically the entire bit of what thunder is.

Michael Shelley was scared of empty rooms. Being in a new house would freak him out so bad because he hated not having furniture set up. It made the space look unnaturally wide and he didn’t like it.

Elias has a fear of germs. He’s very generous about giving people sick days because he’s being very honest when he says he doesn’t want anyone coming in if they have the flu or something.

Sasha is scared of large bodies of water. She likes knowing what’s going on around her at all times, and it’s hard to know what’s going on in a sea. The idea of a fish grazing against her foot while she swims is her worst nightmare.

Basira doesn’t do roller coasters. She hates the speed, the fast movements, and having to trust that it’s well built. Nothing about them is enjoyable to her.

Daisy doesn’t like dentists. She doesn’t do teeth stuff in general and she really doesn’t like the feeling of vulnerability that comes from someone poking around your mouth.

Tim is scared of geese. He got attacked by one in college and ever since then he sprints by geese whenever he see’s them. Sasha has so many videos of him in a dead sprint on her phone.

Gertrude has a fear of developing a phobia.

When it comes to media, not every question you could possibly think of needs to be answered. Sometimes things just need to be left open ended because they’re not very plot relevant and the story needs to move at a good pace.

Having said that, how on Earth did Oliver Banks get from Nemo Point back to a hospital in London?

“I could never be as good of an Archivist as Gertrude.” - Jon says, standing next to Martin, Melanie, Georgie, and Basira who he kept alive during the fearapoclypse despite Gertrude losing all of her assistants.

“I could never be as good of an Archivist as Gertrude.” - Jon says, his hands stained with the ashes of Gerry’s page and the blood of Elias Bouchard because he finished the things Gertrude left incomplete.

“I could never be as good of an Archivist as Gertrude.” - Jon says, after holding onto his humanity even as he slipped into avatarism while Gertrude’s humanity starting slipping while she was still human.

“I could never be as good of an Archivist as Gertrude.” - Jon says, after sending the fears somewhere else for once and for all.

Gertrude was a fantastic Archivist in the practical sense. She did all the right things to keep the fears in cheek and had noble intentions even if her methods were harsh. However, as her successor Jon was able to complete the puzzle she started by adding the final piece she has been missing: Bringing humanity into the equation.

What I think The Magnus Archive character’s smell like:

Jon - Jon smells like old books that were left in a room with an air freshener all day, meaning that he smells like any library that’s existed for more than a decade. The way he smells is not helping the “Jon is old” allegations that his coworkers give him.

Martin - Martin smells a bit like tea, which isn’t a surprise to anyone considering how much he makes. But he also smells a lot like peppermint because of a hand lotion he uses. (Bonus headcanon that Jon used to not like the scent of mint, but by Season 4 he has a bowl of peppermints on his desk.)

Tim - Tim smells like a noticeable body spray that would be applied by frat boys and apparently Magnus Institute workers. Most people couldn’t pull the scent off, but there’s something about his general demur that makes the smell seem to suit him more than it should.

Sasha - Sasha smells like a coffee shop. She smells warm and sweet like hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls being served as a treat. The way she smells is very comfortable and welcoming.

Melanie - If you asked Melanie this question she would say that she doesn’t smell strong of anything. However, if you Georgie would say that smells faintly like coconut deodorant and hair dye. This is because Georgie likes women.

Georgie - Georgie smells like green apple because of the soap and shampoo she uses.

Basira - Basira smells like a mix of coffee and a room full of house plants combined into one. Being around her is like being around the physical embodiment of a sunroom.

Daisy - Daisy smells like a spring day. She smells like soil soaked by rain and a forest full of pine trees who’s cones are in bloom. She has this very natural smell about her that couldn’t be replicated by any cologne or shampoo.

Peter - Peter smells like saltwater. No matter where he goes he the the ocean follows him.

Elias - Elas somehow smells exactly like an eye doctor’s office. It’s not on purpose, he just achieves that uncomfortable clinical smell naturally.

Gertrude - Gertrude has smelt like the wick of a candle that was just went out ever since her ritual with The Desolation. Before that she had a slight orange smell that she expects clung to her clothes from her daily lunchtime snack, but that was a long time ago.

Gerard - Gerard’s clothes reek of smoke. Between his cigarette habit and his book burning he smells like a dirty chimney being lit most of the time, with the only expectation being late at night when he paints. He smells like watercolor and acrylic then. Though it’s always fleeting.

Michael Shelley - Michael smells soft like laundry that was just taken out of the dryer. When Distortion Michael has a smell he smells like laundry that was just taken out of the dryer but also tv static mixed with coffee cake and lilac. Maybe.

Helen Richardson - Helen Richardson smells like her favorite strawberry lotion and perfume. Distortion Helen smells like strong lemon cleaning products, making her smell like a sterile hotel lobby in a way that’s both familiar and distressing. She has a much more consistent scent than Distortion Michael since she’s a bit more stable. But it’s still unsettling.

Both Gerry and Michael have quite a few scars.

Gerry’s scars mostly come from living a life that’s entangled with fears. He has burns all over his body from the Desolation Leitner that went wrong. He has burns all over his hands as a consequence of all the things he’s had to set on fire over the years. He has slash scars, and bug bite scars, and even a scar he left over from a rash caused by The Corruption. All of them remind him of the world he lives in, and he couldn’t get rid of them even if he wanted to.

Michael’s scars tend to come from mundane clumsiness. He has a scar on his finger from not paying enough attention while cutting a carrot. He has a scar on his ankle where he accidentally ran into a corner of his house too hard. He has a scar on his arm where he tried to pick up a stray cat. All of his scars come from perfectly normal things that he doesn’t really linger on because they don’t hold any significance to his life. They’re just there.

Neither of them really know what brings about the conversation, but after knowing each other for a few months Michael and Gerry get on the topic of scars. Gerard tells the harrowing stories of some of his worst ones, and Michael is embarrassed to admit all the clumsy ways he got his. Despite his hesitation he tells Gerry about all the little moments in life that ended up leaving him with a scar. He expects laughter or at least a little smile due to the severe contrast in their stories, but he’s surprised when he’s met with quiet contemplation from Gerry instead.

Awhile after they start dating Gerry and Michael are walking by a park and Gerry spots a rose bush. He goes to get one of the flowers for Michael and end’s up with a thorn in his finger. Michael helps him get it out, but it still end’s up leaving a tiny scar, one that Michael doesn’t think much about. Clumsy misgivings are normal to him. They’re just a possible part of his day to day and now he guesses they’re a part of Gerry’s too.

But he doesn’t miss the way Gerard runs his fingers along his scar in the moments where he feels like he doesn’t belong in the normal world. Or the way that he jokes that it was “hard earned” despite being one of the least severe injuries that he has ever gotten.

One day when they’re passing the same rose bush that gave Gerry his scar, Michael jokes that the bush is a lot more dangerous then it looks. Gerard laughs and agrees, and Michael takes the opportunity to apologize for the thorn incident since he was getting the flower for him in the first place. But Gerard just shrugs and says that it was no big deal. “That scar has my favorite story, anyways.”

An aspect of Eric Delano’s personality that makes me really curious comes from this paragraph. More specifically the sentence “She was having a real hard time of it. My legs were all over the shop. Would have probably been funny, if it hadn’t been me.”

My first thought upon watching the series, and one that I think is interesting from a characterization standpoint, was that it was maybe possible that Eric had a dark side of his own. Not one that was as intense as Mary’s, but one that was there and prevalent enough where he might have found Mary struggling with a corpse’s legs funny as long as those legs didn’t belong to him Gerry.

Possibly.

My second thought upon rewatching the series that another possibility was that Eric used humor as a coping mechanism and was trying to find humor in the sheer horror of his death. Which he did.

Possibly.

We don’t know a lot about who Eric was a person since his statement was mostly centered on his abusive relationship with Mary and his soured dynamic with Gertrude. So it’s a bit hard to say which one of the two possibilities I think is more likely, but either way I think that one sentence is telling of some aspect of his personality. Regardless of which interpretation you lean toward.

As a flower nerd I need The Magnus Archives fandom to know that there’s a plant called White Baneberry that looks like eyes and is used to symbolize danger and toxicity because the plant is very poisonous.

So in other words: This is just Elias Bouchard or The Eye as a plant.

The top three “Date Everything” Characters I think The Magnus Archive characters would like the most.

Something I think would have been neat to see a tiny bit more of in TMA would be the more social side of an Assistant’s investigative work.

As we know, The Institute often does follow up on cases. And as we also know, the concept of working in a supernatural institute sounds insane to a good chunk of the population. Martin even says that he has to lie to get information when he’s telling Jon about the apartment manager he talked to before he met Prentiss, and we know Tim would impersonate and woe information out of people because normal talking wouldn’t do it.

So I would have loved an episode or two that was just about the assistants trying to find ways to socially leverage information out of people. I think that could be a really interesting premise in general but I also would have loved an excuse to get more Sasha/Tim/Martin solo content. Though I also like the idea of early seasons Jon having to take on the assistants job for the day for some reason and having to subtly get information without the use of his later seasons powers.

I honestly think Jon’s capable of it! He was able to get that one tech chick to help him open by Gertrude’s laptop by claiming he had locked himself out. I think it would be a fun challenge for him to have to carefully navigate an entire conversation while trying to learn something he can’t know otherwise. Especially since early seasons Jon can be a bit…standoffish.

The entire concept of being an Archivist for the weird and needing to navigate that in social situation is so interesting. I would have loved to see more of the mundaneness of the normal world being mixed with the inherent oddness of what The Institute does.
