drawing trans folk and being a trans ally
hello friends! i’m unsure how to approach this myself, so i decided to ask you guys what your thoughts are.
so, i have a headcanon about a geralt from the witcher franchise being trans, and i’ve made art of him once before displaying his top surgery scars. i was planning on drawing him again and displaying all the scars he has on the upper half of his body, but i had to stop and think about how it would come across. i want my art to be respectful and do my best as a cis artist to depict trans bodies in a non-exploitative manner.
i’m familiar with the concept of sensitivity readers, and i
wouldn’t mind seeking several (maybe 5?) trans folk and ask about their
opinions on the sketches, with the appropriate compensation included of
course.
i’d also be willing to donate money to a charity supporting trans people, e.g.
The Okra Project, The Trevor Project or BTFA Collective. i’d also link the charity that i decide to go with in the post in question.
these are just some potential ideas of how to be supportive. and just to clarify, none of my art is behind a paywall and i won’t be monetarily benefiting from this art in specific.
so the question is to you: how should i handle this as a cis artist? you are more than welcome to give me your insight (anon is on!)
