so i’ve been having some thoughts about the magnus protocol. because my thought is it’s probably unlikely that the taxonomy of the entities themselves is exactly the same in a new universe, so i started thinking about what some alternative conceptions of how they work could be and i stumbled on one that – though it’s obviously not going to be what happens in the show – i kinda liked and wanted to write down.
so the idea is, what if instead of 14/15 distinct entities, it was seven spectrums, each of which contained a full presence of something and its full absence, both of which result in the manifestation of one of the tma-universe fears. like this:
scale: the concept of hugeness and its absence (the vast and the buried)
obscurity: your perceptions becoming strange, or, conversely, reality itself morphing into something unrecognisable (the spiral and the stranger)
permanence: the ending of your own life, or the ending of everything you have ever known (the end and the extinction)
isolation: being truly and completely alone, or never being alone again, being a home for what loves you (the lonely and the corruption)
insight: complete acute awareness, or a complete lack of the ability to perceive that which surrounds you (the eye and the dark)
pulse: the pulse of the roiling violence around you, your pulse in your electrified meat prison, the pulse of the thing that is chasing you (the slaughter, the flesh, and the hunt)
control: the idea that you are being controlled, or the idea that things around you can be randomly, indiscriminately destroyed, and you cannot exert any control to stop it (the web and the desolation)
anyway i think the concept of reimagining the same fears in a different way is neat.
[ID: Digital painting of Martin and Jon from TMA, set post-MAG 159. They are seated side by side on a moving train. Martin is a short, fat, white man with greying brown hair and faded-brown eyes, wearing rectangular reading glasses, a reddish scarf, a grey shirt, and a dark grey waistcoat. Jon is a tall, thin British-Indian man with curly silver hair and a patchy beard with many scars on his face and body, wearing rectangular glasses, a grey pea coat and an off-green business shirt. Jon’s arm is around Martin’s shoulders, with Jon smiling cautiously down at Martin, who stares miserably out the window, his forehead resting against Jon’s cheek. Martin appears mildly waterlogged, and there is dried spattered blood on Jon’s hand, the front of his shirt, his beard, and the scarf. Outside the window is an overcast sunset over a landscape of dense trees. End ID.]
i think we, collectively, don’t talk enough about the fact that jon probably still had Exploded Peter Bits™
all over him. i’m gonna be honest.
First time doing a DTIYS had a lot of fun. Original is here by @eyes-eyes-eyes-eyes-eyes-eyes! (Also tumblr is ruining the quality i think so click to see it better)
Jurgen Leitner had 978 fucked up books in his collection at it’s height, but we’ve only heard of 26 of them officially. So I thought it would be fun to come up with some possible additions of my own.
- a diet cookbook that the recipes when eaten will cause you to literally rot from the inside out, tied to the corruption.
- a version of the Little Prince where the prince never encounters anyone else in all his travels, every world is empty save for him and never makes friends. Slowly becoming sadder and lonelier throughout the book. Tied to the lonely and possibly the vast.
- a book of songs where none of the lyrics make sense and if sung the world too will reflect the complete nonsensical patterns of the music at least to the reader. Tied to the spiral.
- a version of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark that is even more sinister and as you read an overwhelming darkness weighs down on you until it swallows the reader whole. Tied to the dark.
- a guide to gardening that possesses the reader to dig, to feel the dirt beneath their skin, and to plant themselves deep within the earth. Tied to the buried.
- a cloud charting book that deceives the reader into seeing enormous beings in the clouds looming over humanity. Tied to the vast.
- a book on communication that makes the reader more and more paranoid as they read it slowly destroying any chance on actual communication. Possibly tied to the eye.

[ID: Two-panel comic of Daisy and Basira from TMA. In the first, Basira stands with one hand on her hip and one eyebrow raised and asks “Daisy?” In front of her Daisy is seated at a kitchen counter, hunched over with her back to the viewer, making aggressive eating noises. The second panel shows Daisy’s face. Still hunched, with cereal from the bowl in front of her spread over her face and the counter, she says “I love eating dry cereal… it feels like eating dog food, for boys.” End ID.]
