I know that we assumed that Sam was a Jon parallel (new job, mysterious traumatic past, scrawniest brown man in Britain) but i don’t think he is anymore. Paranoia, an unhealthy obsession with workplace mysteries, absolutely doomed by the narrative? That’s all Colin.
Meanwhile, look at Sam. He’s obsessed with the Magnus Institute, to be sure, but unlike Jon, he’s actually good at it. He’s reckless, willing to follow any leads no matter how dangerous or weird. He listens to mysterious sources that any self respecting horror protagonist (cough Alice cough) would flag as risky. But beyond that, he’s also smart, confident, and brave. He’s not only easy to like, he’s easy to underestimate. And that’s not Jon.
Surprised I haven’t seen anyone comment on “Chester” reading a statement about someone walking around ruining stranger’s lives for their own gain. Yeah where have I heard that one before. Jon.
there’s something so bittersweet about hearing tmagp!gerry. the way he chats with sam and celia, how he pursues his artistic passion, how he immediately introduces himself as gerry. he’s so open, so unguarded, so eager to make friends. he seems genuinely… happy. there’s a lot we don’t yet know about his life in this universe, but even from this one scene it’s clear how different he is from the gerry we know, who spent his short life either under his abusive mother’s thumb or trying to prevent an apocalypse. it’s like getting a glimpse into the life tma!gerry could have lived, but never got the chance to.
the map gertrude gave to michael of Zemlya Sannikova was one of those mazes you see on kids’ menus at restaurants, btw

I made this post as a joke but in reality the whole point of the map was that Michael *believed* it. That’s what got him to the heart of the spiral. The map could have literally been ANYTHING.
In Michael’s mind he *knew* where he was going and THAT is how he got through The Spiral. He trusted her.
The same way the guy in mag 100 stumbled out because he was late for dinner. He had a purpose he was sure of.
The map Gertrude gave him literally could have been anything and Michael would always find his way through, because doubt is what The Spiral is.
if the magnus archives was a comedy podcast, elias would’ve yelled “unhand me!” when he was getting arrested and that’s how it would’ve been revealed that he’s jonah magnus.
If your plot feels flat, STUDY it! Your story might be lacking…
Stakes - What would happen if the protagonist failed? Would it really be such a bad thing if it happened?
Thematic relevance - Do the events of the story speak to a greater emotional or moral message? Is the conflict resolved in a way that befits the theme?
Urgency - How much time does the protagonist have to complete their goal? Are there multiple factors complicating the situation?
Drive - What motivates the protagonist? Are they an active player in the story, or are they repeatedly getting pushed around by external forces? Could you swap them out for a different character with no impact on the plot? On the flip side, do the other characters have sensible motivations of their own?
Yield - Is there foreshadowing? Do the protagonist’s choices have unforeseen consequences down the road? Do they use knowledge or clues from the beginning, to help them in the end? Do they learn things about the other characters that weren’t immediately obvious?
one of my favorite favorite things to visualize is tma season 5 but due to Nightmare Logic jon and martin get an automatic mandatory costume change for each domain they travel through.

Neither, really - sometimes you just gotta write a nasty sharp man, then part if your brain goes “the shellyfellas are gonna love this” and another part goes “is that a problem?” and the first part goes “no, just sayin” and then you go make a cup of tea.

i like the red/black/white color scheme. gives a nice contrast me thinks def not bc i want the excuse of “ blood” to just move around my brush like crazy and make random splatters. nope. not at all.
