itsclydebitches:

Jonelias thought of the day is that Elias must come across as so stuffy and boring to those at the Institute - which, you know, very much helps hide his true nature - but as an avatar of the Eye and a man determined to avoid the End, Elias is someone whose entire being revolves around the interplay of knowledge and experiences. He’s compelled to Know it all and his efforts to avoid death invite him to Experience it all too, a fascinating combination of passive observer and, by virtue of being a 200+ year-old in search of true immortality, an active participant too. This is a man whose longevity and thirst for knowledge invites an obsession with life that contradicts the ‘Sits in his office doing nothing but spreadsheets all day’ image he’s learned to cultivate. (Though, to be clear, he does love the spreadsheets.) And I don’t just mean “obsession with life” in the sense of him avoiding the finality of death, but actually loving the act of being alive.

i am once again losing my fucking mind over the concept of one-sided jonhelen. helen says to jon “she liked you.” and what that really means is “she made me like you”. the distortion inherits feelings, we know it inherited michael’s anger. imagine being both the water and the blood bleeding into it, you feel yourself dissolving into someone else but you are the someone else you’re dissolving into. and then you are one, and you have feelings that were never meant to be yours.

just as michael’s hatred of gertrude made him terrorize jon when he was the distortion, i like to think that helen’s love for jon made her follow him around the way she did. she wanted to be around him, and she couldn’t understand why.

there’s also the lack of dignity of it all. going from trying to kill someone to being hopelessly in love with them within a moment. being essentially forced into that unrequited love, and knowing that any second, if they just looked in the right direction, they’d know. a being of pure delusion falling in love with a being of infinite knowledge and exposed secrets. the only person capable of uncovering the truth about her is also the person she’s in love with. she continues to willingly put herself into that situation where her very being could be torn into at any second.

i am inventing fucked up scenarios you haven’t even considered okay

The Magnus Archives #67 - Burning Desire.

I’ve now finished season 2 which felt like it went by quite quickly. I am a few episodes into series 3 and it truly does just get better and better. All my favorite qualities of the podcast keep getting expanded on which is of course enjoyable. I re-listened to #67 and started to question my design of Agnes. I wanted her to have a dazed look since the whole episode goes on about how odd she is and not quite human even though she looks alluring. But then I realized she was described as tall which I totally missed the mark on, oh well.

The Magnus Institute

SO! I went down a rabbit hole last night because I’m playing the sims and decided to make the Magnus Institute, and, being me, I wanted to try and make the architecture accurate.

Of course, I could have just gone for late 19th century/early 20th century architecture, but I went into the various wikis and reddit threads and found that there is, in fact, a building that Jonny references as an inspiration for the Institute.

Namely, this:

This building is referenced as 42 Millbank, and now owned by the Chelsea College of Arts. Except when you search either one of those, you get different buildings!

What is pictured above is actually 45 Millbank. It’s now used as an event/conference center, and is indeed owned by the College of Arts. Once I knew that, I was able to find these pictures of the interior:

Neat!

But the thing is, I really wanted floorplans. At which point I did some more digging and found some archival records by the lovely people at Friends of Millbank, which explained that 45 Millbank was built as the Royal Army Medical College. There are lots of interesting articles on their site, including primary sources, through which I found this:

I’ve run out of pictures, so hold tight–

Aaaaaand we’re back!

The plans. The PLANS!

OF COURSE, if the building was built as the Institute, it would probably have a different layout. AND…it’s fictional. So do as you please!!

But it’s certainly fun!

Gertrude is dressed in men’s clothing, various surgical instruments and sewing needles held between her fingers, her other hand clamped on Michael’s arm. Michael, his back turned to the viewer, looks back at us with one heavy-lidded, bloodshot eye. Gertrude looks powerful. Michael looks scared. i’ve seen some people say that they don’t like helen because her specific brand of spiral is too evil and i just wanna say. i love that side of helen so much. i love that she’s a lying liar who lies in a condescending and manipulative way. i love that she’s a genuine villain, but only ever has friendly conversations with jon and martin.

michael’s brand of spiral was very overt. all about confusion and madness and fractals and shapes.

helen is a lot more subtle. a lot more “you know it’s fake, but you have to play along” or “you don’t know what’s going on, but you feel lied to” that girl is playing MIND GAMES she’s playing 4d chess with jmart’s emotions and i love her for that.

and you know. i also love that she can get mean. she can get angry. she can get desperate. she can get scared.

it’s implied a few times that the distortion is less of an avatar and more of a direct manifestation/monster, but helen acts like an avatar would. i think michael really did become just a mask the distortion wore, but helen seemed like she really grew into the distortion. she sort of became an avatar of her own volition. she enjoyed it, and she didn’t deny herself that enjoyment at any point. she thought…well, if i’m gonna have to be a monster, i’m at least gonna have fun with it and not worry about the morality of it all. and that was iconic of her.

helen was the distortion so much more than michael ever was. michael was a mask and a vessel and a sacrifice. helen was a victim that became an avatar. i think, in a way, she was lying to herself the entire time. telling herself that this was just her nature now, that she wasn’t evil, she was just doing what she had to. that she wasn’t evil for enjoying it. that’s what she told jon too, and in a way, she had a point. jon beating himself up about being an avatar never actually stopped him from hurting others. an avatar cannot exist without harming others. at least helen was having fun with it.

i think that difference between victim (michael) and avatar (helen) is a really interesting thing. for example, you could make a case for martin being a victim of the lonely rather than an avatar of it. he doesn’t enjoy it, he uses it as an unhealthy coping mechanism of sorts, whereas peter genuinely enjoys the lonely and wants more people to experience it.

but also, there’s something to the idea that a victim can become an avatar. the distortion took helen without her consent, marked her, it made her cry and drove her to the brink of insanity before consuming her fully. but she still became an avatar of it.

it’s interesting to think that there was just something about helen richardson that there wasn’t about michael shelley. some kind of inherent trait, some kind of quality, something that made her take to distortionhood in a way he never did.

I know we all laugh at Jon for taking one look at the Arachnophobia statement (MAG016) and going “DRUGS. POPPYCOCK. HUMBUG.” but like-

This is early s1 Jon who has stated out loud that he believed his colleagues might try to haze him, who is afraid people might knowingly try to get to him.

Jon’s prissy, high and mighty attitude after the statement ends might just be him performing confidence to the people he knows has free access to the tape - his fellow archive workers. Especially after his earlier slip ups (wondering about hazings and oh, wanting to personally screen every new statement before the research department can even start working on them).

If you think about the statement as a fake planted by a coworker who wants to humiliate him, it’s chilling. It has so, so many details that run parallel to Jon’s own life, that we can safely presume nobody at the archives should know about given how private Jon seems to be.

Even disregarding the obvious - that would be the supernatural childhood spider trauma - there’s the lonely, workaholic existence, the smoking, the childhood wandering, the feeling of having your body controlled by an outside force, a goddamn cat named after a military rank.

Who knows what other details fit perfectly with Jon’s life that we as the audience don’t know about.

And the statement giver is looking into getting psychiatric help. He’s trying to establish if he’s in need of anti-psychotic medication. To the audience this might seem as a pretty grounded and potentially positive way to try to move past the trauma of the spider haunting.

But to Jon? Who is holding a piece of paper in his hand with something that could represent proof that someone is looking into his life? It might as well be calling him insane.

Jon was deeply marked by the Spiral by the end of it all, wasn’t he.

Also, like, reminder that Jon, deep down, knew the statement was real because he wasn’t able to make a digital recording of it.

His two alternatives in this situation was to be in denial about it and direct his unease and ire at his immediate surroundings… or accepting and internalising that the cause of his childhood trauma is still out there, killing people just like him.

(via @asleeb)

You know what - I read your tags and I could literally hear in my brain the tone of Grandma Sims going “don’t be ridiculous, Jonathan”

The way she might sigh, or roll her eyes, or-

And like

I think that is especially impactful because I absolutely think Jon cared about her opinion, in lack of any other. He didn’t rebel like a lot of us do when we’re young - he never tried to distance himself from the things his grandmother stood for. He did the OPPOSITE. He tried to emulate her. He tried to live up to her expectations.

He berated himself when he made mistakes, because that’s what she would have done. He faked being a full decade older to make himself seem more authorative and experienced, because in his grandmother’s home, that’s how you got to have a say in important matters.

She worked hard, she pretended to be fine to onlookers, she did things even if they were painful, she didn’t ask for help and Jon looked at her and thought “that’s what an adult is”.

hnghgk. come to think of it, this reading of Jon’s grandmother would mean that a lot of his best traits – his moral sense, his sometimes overboarding empathy, how he handles deep loss and insurmountable odds by carrying on and just trying to do the best that he can with what he is given – are echoes of her, things he learned and admired about her

think I may have figured out when jon’s birthday is meant to be in the most mundane way possible. in one of the q+a episodes (too lazy to figure out which atm) (edit: s3 extended q+a!), jonny said that the archivist’s just meant to be “[his] age,” and given that the birthday party scene seems to take place fairly soon after the new archives staff got together in autumn/winter 2015, I think jonny might just have given him his own birthday, november 3.

3 november 2016 is the date of mag 55 and that actually gives a whole new flavor to this supplemental

Text reading, "Supplemental.

I… I don’t have much to report, actually. It’s been Halloween week, which means the research department is always inundated with statements. Most of them are patently false, but the volume means that they’ve called in the archive to assist with the overflow.

It’s… been nice, actually. Disproving piles of nonsense felt good, like real work, not just driving myself to distraction with conspiracy theories and paranoia. I even got a good night’s sleep. I miss those days.

End supplemental."ALT

it’s the birthday boy’s first vaguely good day in at least four months, probably longer. god.

also: one year ago to this day, all his assistants crowded into his office and threw him a party and they had a nice time together. that’s not what this birthday is like at all. I’m rotting.

fogandblackcoffee:

I often see people depict Elias as the snobby, prim rich boy between Elias and Peter and here’s my argument for the opposite: Peter canonically talks about being an aristocrat and scion of a powerful household, casually mentions dropping unfathomable amounts of money on personal projects, acts like a spoilt child when he doesn’t get his way, spends all his time on his yacht ship chilling in his cabin and having meals delivered to him, insults Jon by calling him ‘grubby Jesus’ which is just so fucking snobby oh my god, has a family that clearly values appearances, and then there’s his ritual. God, his ritual. I mean:

“I still remember seeing the headline, there in black and white: “The Loneliest Building in Britain.” Trouble is, everyone I picked was white middle-class, so people actually cared, falling over themselves to declare it “emblematic of the problems of the modern world.”

He’s such critical levels of snobby rich boy that his ritual failed specifically because he’s so short-sighted about privilege (he also, like an arrogant little rich boy, insisted on picking people himself despite being surrounded by more qualified people, because of course he did).

Elias, meanwhile, is like a 200 years old man who is referred to as a ‘waste of a suit’, loves paperwork, wears the same haircuts for so long that other people notice how old fashioned they are, and is happy to let his vessels reach middle age and older. He’s an old man who likes paperwork and was able to pretend to be a well-meaning, but somewhat incompetent boss for years. Like, this guy isn’t the snobby rich boy between them; he actively uses Peter’s snobby rich boy status to benefit himself.
