jonelias is incredibly funny and thematically compelling to me because of their character trajectories. like it starts out as twisted nbc hannibal season 1 psychological horror “you wouldn’t put a guy in situations” wherein elias runs his lab rat i mean jon through the archivist trauma punch card machine (“wind him up and watch him go”) and every day is tortured gothic horror protagonist day for him but he doesn’t quite get it yet. and then season 3 happens and jon’s a little further in the beholding’s grasp and he’s experiencing physiological changes which only elias understands and now we’re in vampirism metaphor territory, he turned you into a monster but he’s the only one who will offer you the absolution you seek! (“elias, am i still human?”) murderer mentor maker!!! and you hate him you HATE him but *will graham voice* where else would i go?

and then season 4 happens and audio recording by jonathan sims, the Archivist. point of no return. he’s extracting statements. he’s feeding. he’s unwittingly channelling elias (“you just need… a break.”) he’s scaring everyone at the institute, but doesn’t it feel a tiny bit good after having been powerless and at the mercy of all these other avatars for so long? and even then the only person in the whole world he can turn to for advise is elias because they’re alike. they’re mirrors. they were similar even before the beholding had its hold on jon, because to be avatars of the eye is to hold a shared, unabating curiosity for knowledge and both of them sought it out to protect themselves from the fears. why else would jon end up at the magnus institute if not for a guest for mr spider.

then there’s the panopticon reveal and turns out jon was trapped in a bluebeard narrative all along! but bluebeard’s just won. jon took the key and opened the door and found his secret but he’s not simply another victim, being bluebeard’s final wife means narratively distinguishing yourself from the ones that came before and he does. he’s the special one, he’s the archive. and jonah/elias says he did everything to free himself from pain and death forever, to free them both from it all forever. and he says “don’t worry, jon. you’ll get used to it here. in the world that we have made.”

and then. power dynamic reversal‼️now season 5 fumbled this badly but listen. the monster you created is coming down to hunt you for sport. the thing you created to escape annihilation is also the very thing that can end you at any given moment. “behold a god more powerful than i who comes to rule over me.” and then it’s “suffer for me, as i suffered for you.” and eventually they play out some equivalent of tackling each other off a cliff hannigram style. or dead ringers 1988. because they’re doubles they’re mirrors they’re shadow selves they’re the watcher and the archivist. conjoined. and one cannot exist without the other :)

Currently going through a Jonelias Renaissance after several months of nothing and god i want Jon to be Elias’ special guy. He picked him. He chose him. He thought him; this man is going to be the guy who will be eternally with me. This guy, surely, I can have all the feelings I want about, because he’s all mine, I’m basically getting him to be exactly who I want/need him to be –

and in the end he’s wrong, or maybe he doesn’t actually lead Jon enough because Elias likes more dropping little pebbles in the water and watching it ripple than like, privatizing the whole lake like the web is, AND YET, even at the end, Jon manages to be his one exception, manages to be special enough in Elias’ eyes that Elias is able to give him one last good luck instead of hating him or focusing on his death, which he’s literally ruined a world to escape in the first place.

I’m obsessed with it. I want Jon to be Elias’s exception for everything. It drives normal people crazy. It drives Jon crazy. Elias just stares at him and goes “ah, yes <3. My own little gift to myself <3. Doesn’t he look frazzled and angry today <3. I love him <3”

dr-fanshawe:

Elias is the reason why the Institute exists, but Jon makes sure the Institute has a reason to exist – when Jon is cut off from the Eye, nobody can collect statements, which means that there is no purpose to the Archives, no way to make sure the fear and the knowledge are pulled out of the victims properly. if Elias is the beating heart of the Institute, then Jon is its blood

this is not a feature inherent to Jon as far as I can tell; more like a feature of being the Archivist by itself. but I find it very, very interesting that the Institute relies on Jon so much. before, I sort of assumed that the reason why archival assistants can’t take statements in ep100 is because they are just assistants, not the Archivist. however, in ep29 (cheating death) it’s said that Fiona Law took that statement… which means they can, actually, take them, and the reason why it didn’t work is because Jon was hidden from the Eye by Nikola. the Implications…

Elias is the reason why the Institute exists, but Jon makes sure the Institute has a reason to exist – when Jon is cut off from the Eye, nobody can collect statements, which means that there is no purpose to the Archives, no way to make sure the fear and the knowledge are pulled out of the victims properly. if Elias is the beating heart of the Institute, then Jon is its blood

ceaselesswatchersspecialboy:

Relistening to Checking Out, and I’ve always liked this scene in particular, as it is one that’s very open to interpretation.

I believe, from what I’ve seen personally at least, one or the most common interpretations is that Helen’s observation is either incorrect, or intentionally misleading, and that Jon’s response actually stems from touch aversion, or a degree of it, attributed to his trauma, particularly moments where he’s been left helpless and at the whims of others. E.g. Kidnapped by the Circus, almost killed by Daisy etc. And while I think this interpretation is both interesting and plausible, I don’t think I’ve seen much for the opposite interpretation, which is that Helen’s observation is correct.

It can be difficult to talk about Jon’s humanity sometimes, as there’s a lot of nuance and layers to cover. The fact is, Jon, especially in season five, does not completely think like a human. He is simultaneously a painfully human character such with deep compassion and guilt and self-loathing, while also being a being of immense knowledge who sees and understands the world in a different light, and in a way no one else can possibly comprehend, which has to be very isolating all things considered.

As with everything in TMA, Jon makes a choice, and his choice is to end the apocalypse, to stay with Martin, and to stay as human as he possibly can. We know from Annabelle that had she have taken Martin, who is presumably acting as one of his main anchors to humanity, Jon potentially would have snapped completely, the final push over the edge as she puts it. It has to be a difficult thing for him, to try and balance his existence when he is so fundamentally changed, and when this world naturally feels right to him, and you could argue that him snapping at the mother here is simply his instinct, being what he is.

He is The Archivist, the meant-to-be Pupil of the Eye, one of the most important beings present, and so it makes sense there’s almost an instinctive detachment from the victims. He is meant to Watch them, and Watching means no physical interaction. By touching him, the mother has broken this barrier, and so, instinctually, he reacts — with anger, notably.

I’d say it’s meant to contrast how we see him acting prior to the touch, where he seems genuinely sympathetic with the mother, and he is trying to help in what little way he can. Because before she touches him, that gap between Watched and Watcher is still firm in place, and so he can handle that.

Bearing in mind, I haven’t re-listened to the rest of season five with this, so I may have missed something.

I also think both interpretations can co-exist too, and that could be just as interesting to explore. Either way, I find that, with Jon, it’s important to consider his status in the Eyepocalypse and his nature vs his choices, although, his nature vs his choices goes for the whole series I think, as choice is such a consistent theme in TMA and in the Avatars.

wanted to rant about this one. anyways it’s about jon’s final choice, killing the world or the fears’ apotheosis. head versus heart. so the right side, the side that’s furthest from his heart, is meant to be the rational choice. the tape recorder and him looking towards it signifies that with that option he would continue listening and being listened to, and keep watch until the end. his fate is sealed no matter what so he’s still entangled in tapes, but the eyes on his hands are uncovered and vigilant. and the left side, the choice guided by emotion, has him holding the web’s lighter with a tape over his heart. the eyes on his hands are covered, he cannot view the lighter, and he is averting his gaze, because to follow that path would leave his fate unknown. also, he’s just ignited the lighter, but his hold on the tape recorder is loose and it is unclear whether he has already pressed record.

jonelias fics are fun but over half of them seem insistent on making jon nothing but some damp wet rag for elias to maneuver, and making elias an all powerful and invulnerable super eye avatar, which kind of misses a big part of what makes jonelias intriguing in the first place- the fact that despite elias’s centuries of stolen life and manipulation, jon is ultimately more dangerous than he could ever be, and elias essentially has a carefully built but very thin leash on something that could rip him to shreds.

i can’t stand onceler elias. no he would not be showing up to work in eyeliner and heels with a ridiculously expensive bright green suit embroidered with eyes, a perpetual evil smirk, eye jewelry, and a villain goatee.

i feel like there’s a difference between putting a character in a funky outfit for the fun of it, and misinterpreting a character so badly it’s clear you don’t understand them in the slightest. like sure put him in a nice suit or eye themed outfit for fun! that’s cool! but he’s a boring middle aged man and that’s a good thing! you don’t need to be allergic to wrinkles or larger body types. he probably wouldn’t look like a thin and muscular 20 year old (with slight eyebags to convey age) who goes to his daily office job in full glam and makeup. he’s a loser academic who finds paperwork enjoyable and has spent centuries perfectly content managing an eldritch little research nonprofit. he doesn’t need to be a scrawny little fucking twink onceler oc from 2012 that i could snap like a twig. bitch looks like he’d be semi-ironically shipped with sans. i want to hit him with a car.

Round 2: Goldenheart vs LonelyEyes

FIGHT

Goldenheart

LonelyEyes

See Results

i need lonelyeyes to lose. i don’t even know who the first guys are but i need lonelyeyes to lose. something about the way the tma fandom treats elias is honestly homophobic—istg when people call him a twink, 90% of the time it sounds like what they want to call him is a fruit or a fairy. the jokes about him being Peter’s sugar baby all horribly mischaracterise him. WHERE does everyone get this idea that he’s so prone to overspending and frivolous luxuries. no seriously where!!

and Honest To Fucking God the repeated divorce jokes are just frustrating. on a factual basis, do we really think they got married and divorced that many times in the 3 and a half years between first gay marriages in the UK and elias’s arrest. on a characterisation basis—it kind of treats elias being gay as a joke? i cannot put my finger on it but GOD. okay. okay no I will shut up.

anyway. yeah. i hate lonelyeyes a lot of the fandom homophobia (/srs) towards elias ties in there. if this is incoherent that may be because I have covid

no, you’re so right. I was so excited to learn that they are a popular ship within the fandom because I thought they were interesting – two villains with conflicting goals but who stick together nonetheless (To An Extent. they do not hesitate to go against each other which I also really liked). the way they talk to/about each other was also really compelling to me: “He played you like a cheap whistle”, “Poor Peter. He really should have left well enough alone. Or just done what I’d asked in the first place.” <- doesn’t that sound Good? they have a History together, and even more than that – Jonah has a history with the Lukases in general, dating back to Mordecai. aren’t you curious why? how Lukases became involved with the Institute? why does this relationship still exist? what does Jonah give them in turn? turns out that nobody gives a fuck. all they are interested in are weird, genuinely homophobic jokes about Elias. this ties into the general treatment of Elias by the fandom but this is another can of worms that is very relevant here, but I don’t want to ramble even more. I got into the fandom too late to tell if lonelyeyes are to blame in that treatment or is it just a symptom of a larger problem (probably both in some capacity), but the point is that there is a problem and almost no one stops to think about it.

there is a good post by elias-rights on it:

user elias-rights, november 26, 2023:
first post: Truly burned out on Lonelyeyes for good.
in a reblog to the previous post: "Ooh, Elias dresses and acts like a caricature of an effeminate gay man and gets all his money from his sugar daddy Peter! He is gay and homophobic and spends thousands getting married just so he can divorce in spite of the fact that nothing in the podcast points to a penchant for excessive luxury! And everyone in the archives hates him before it comes out that he's a killer because he's just so obviously evil and weird and other! And he's a slut as a foil to Jon who doesn't fuck men like Elias does (unless I want him to be sexually available to Martin)!" Shut up, my God.
ALT

I feel like if you have spent any amount of time in the fandom, you will know what this post is about, even if you never engaged with it critically before. do you see the issue? the wild mischaracterization of one of the central characters of the entire podcast just to make a bad joke?

also, the divorce thing is not even real, as prev pointed out. but even more than that, it does not fit their characters. why would they do that? it is expensive (Peter might have the money, but Elias does not. contrary to a ridiculously popular belief, he is not a capitalist – he runs a non-profit organization. he told Jon off for pissing off Naomi because she is connected to Lukases and he’s worried about the budget. he is not as rich as everyone seems to think), it is a lot of unnecessary fuss (do you think they don’t have things to do aside from going through the divorce-marriage cycle for 10 times a month?), and it draws a lot of attention to them. and, a more personal pet peeve, it takes the complexity out of their relationship, I think. it’s not that they constantly argue and make up, they are simultaneously allies and enemies, and which one is it right now depends on the circumstances. and an even more personal pet peeve – I don’t think Jonah would ever marry. he simply doesn’t care enough.

and what about Peter? I was talking about Elias because he is my favorite, but what about him? well. you tell me. does Peter really exist in the fandom outside of sugar daddy jokes? maybe this is a me issue, but I never see him being talked about properly when it comes to lonelyeyes. which makes a… very interesting picture. neither of these characters are themselves whenever they are “discussed” in the context of this ship. fascinating.

I do like the version of this pairing that exists in my and my friends’ heads, but they really shouldn’t win this.

goldenheart, though, are canonically together and broke up at some point, so that’s closer to the divorcecore than what those two have, I think.

a-name-or-three:

i’m think about speech patterns! take these for all your fic writing needs! not all of them are done bc i was taking requests for who to do next on the discord lol

Jon: He tends to speak like he’d type, a veneer of professionalism and Oxford education, but one which slips the second he’s shocked out of his facade by worms, or Martin. He’s one for run on sentences; he has a lot of thoughts and he wants to get them all out the second they come into his head, no matter if they actually make sense to the listener or not. If he’s shocked! or upset! He gets snippier! His phrases are cut off, or bitchy.

Martin: He, well, he hedges a lot. He lets people come to their conclusions before he, uh, before he finished speaking. It’s easier that way, y'know? They hear what they want to hear. But when he’s angry, or annoyed, or tired, he lets slip what he’s really feeling. He stops biting back his words and he gives up on being sweet. You know what he thinks? Maybe people better listen to him now and then!

Tim: Tim is a consummate professional, but also? A Lad. A lot of people forget, but he started in publishing! He’s good with his words, and a nerd.
These are two Very Important Things about Tim Stoker that he will ensure that you know by the end of a conversation with him. Tim does his best to make you comfortable, talking casually but without restricting what he knows. He’s not about to back down from a point if he disagrees with you, though. He’s always up for a bit of a Scene, be that imitating his movie of the month, or creating some imagined moment about the people around him. He cares, so deeply, and he wears his heart on his sleeve. His emotions ride high; he can be the class clown if he wants to, but he can just as easily be hurt very badly.
Oh, yeah, another thing to mention! He’s a little forgetful in conversation! He needs to wheel back to things when he remembers them! He also has a habit of asking questions without asking them? He’s more curious than he wants to let on…

Elias: Well, Elias is very similar to Jon. He’s a little more restrained in terms of run-on sentences, though. He’s spent a long time crafting his language to provide authority in equal measure with a non-threatening presence. He speaks slowly, as if he’s thinking over every word, rolling them in his mouth like a sweet. When he realises he needs to intimidate, though, a thrill laces everything he says. He *enjoys* the ability to put those below him into their places. He likes using his words to mould and crush people, and he isn’t above doing so. Do I make myself clear, Jon?

Annabelle: Well, Annabelle is similar to Elias, actually. She chooses her words very carefully. She knows how much affect a single choice can have, even down the stress she chooses to put on a phrase. There’s a smile in her voice, like she knows everything that this conversation is going to include. Though, I suppose, it’s important to remember how young she is. When she died, she was just a poor university student… She’s not sure she’s grown up since then, and it’s much easier to weave a web when people think you’re innocent…

Nikola: Nikola talks Exactly how you’d expect a ringmaster puppet to talk! Grand gestures, bright smiles, all with a plastic coating! Isn’t everything she says just wonderful?! She knows people hate her, and she also knows how funny it is to pretend like they adore her! She’s less self-aware, than some of the others, but she’s there to have fun, not manipulate people! She understands her atrocities, and *delights* in them. She doesn’t have a face, so she has to put all her emotions into her voice!

Peter: Peter is just… Tired. Growing up as he did has him split between an innate human desire to share, and the exhaustion of other people. He settles by picking a confidant, and markedly rejecting everyone else through a professional, bland exterior. He knows, he knows better than you, but he’s not going to stress himself proving it. He’s got better things to do.

Michael: Michael… What an interesting boy… He… I…? Was… Is…? Michael is something else. He knows he doesn’t talk in a way that others understand instinctively… And yet it’s always very clear what he means. He is deceit, but he will never lie to you. It’s easy to understand a lie. Much harder to unravel a half-truth. I suppose that’s what Michael is… A half-truth. There’s amusement in his nonsensical nature, even as he bites back resent. Some remnant of that anxious little boy long to make a joke, to titter anxiously at the things his friends say… Michael is confusion, confusing, confused. And he knows exactly what’s happening.

Great post, OP. I’d also like to point out that Elias tends to choose certain figurative, elaborate, or emphatic phrases that aren’t necessarily common in everyday speech. Off the top of my head, “at a hundred thresholds” (MAG 92), “exactly where [his eyes have] always been: […] watching over my Institute” (MAG 158), “you are a living chronicle of terror” (MAG 160), “[Gertrude] died in the line of duty” (MAG 9 IIRC), or “like fingers on a hand, and I am the beating heart of it” (MAG 92), not to mention that according to Peter he “insists” on a certain metaphor we hear him use on a separate occasion. Furthermore, the final bit of invocation in his statement is in iambic metre, so that’s more proof that he chooses his words carefully as you said. Even when he’s embodying his boring bureaucrat persona, he sometimes uses interesting similes, such as comparing Jon’s wounds to Swiss cheese. All in all, his speech patterns feel very… non-neutral, with his frequent adjective and adverb usage. Often, he shifts into a sort of dry humour where his sentences are considerably shorter, and he delivers them with a bland tone, such as “I am still here” or “I only have two eyes”. Lastly, I’ve also noticed he tends to make other people sound like the insane ones (scolding Jon for scowling, or “sometimes I forget how new you all are to this” when “this” is literally apocalyptic supernatural lore).

jonelias was such a missed opportunity. the entire core of the show and jon’s transformation was the relationship between jon and elias. jon is a mirror of his younger self and his greatest creation. jonah spent years crafting him into something he knew could destroy him, building his own god to worship. they were the only ones who could understand each other. and then we’re supposed to forget about it for bland miscommunication between shitty coworkers who don’t even like each other? fuck that. it was supposed to be tragic horror. what’s tragic about jmart? the lack of communication? what’s horrifying? the sheer dullness of martin’s personality?

Jon was definitely normal about it and didn’t smoke the cigarette to the filter nor did he think of it as an indirect kiss. neither bring it up later and soon enough Jon quits smoking

- sometimes pre canon/season one they start playing a staring game. it happened during an Institute work party, their eyes met in the crowded hall and neither looked away, even as Elias talked to someone. Jon loses every time up until season two. late season three Elias starts looking away first intentionally so as to make sure Jon doesn’t see something he isn’t meant to. (they both aren’t happy about it)

- they are in each other’s space a lot, both during arguments and mundane conversations. Elias’s hand on Jon’s shoulder as he tells Jon of another complaint, Jon leaning in as he begs for answers, Elias’s hand on Jon’s neck as he asks Jon to take a break

- Elias cleaned and bandaged Jon wounds in mag 92, squeezing Jon’s burned just a bit too hard, he took in every twitch of pain on Jon’s face and the barely suppressed whimper of pain

- Elias watches Jon read statements. Jon knows it, can feel the weight of Elias’s gaze on his neck. he denies it that he is reading for Elias, he denies that he enjoys being watched as he takes in the fear of the statement

- Jon felt Elias watching him just as he finished taking a statement, the victim’s cries still loud in his ears. angry at Elias for watching him yet still not letting Jon see him, he didn’t notice a tape recorder click. Jon asked Elias if he could force a statement out of him, if Elias would be able to deny. can the Eye feed on itself? how would it feel for both of them? Elias shivered in his prison cell as he imagined his Archivist ripping into his mind, taking every secret he had. he couldn’t allow that to happen but no one would stop him from imagining, wondering how that would feel.

Elias shivered in his prison cell as he imagined his Archivist ripping into his mind, taking every secret he had. he couldn’t allow that to happen but no one would stop him from imagining, wondering how that would feel.

if you don’t love him at his “exhausted unshaven creepy little wreck” mag 4 you don’t deserve him at his mag 111

A digital drawing of Jonah Magnus squinting against the sun. One of his hands is raised to protect his eyes, casting a shadow over his face. This hand is slighty off-focus and blurry. The picture is square and framed on his face, reaching to roughly his shoulders. The background is completely off-focus and mint-toned.

Jonah is a white man with short curly auburn hair, turned coppery where the sun hits it. He has a shaved and angular face, lots of freckles, a pointed chin, high cheekbones, thin, dark eyebrows and a few moles. He has a button-up nose, is wearing an expression of disgust and irritation and also dark lipstick. His eyes are grey, one of them glimmery and light because it is hit by the sun and the other in shadows, with an ever so slight green glow around the pupil. His lower eyelashes are rather long.

As far as clothes go, Jonah is wearing period-typical 1800's clothing: a red waistcoat with golden buttons and a flowy white shirt underneath, peeking through the opening for his neck and hands. The end of his sleeve is ruffled, and at his neck closes off in a pleated cravat.

He has long, black and sharp painted nails.ALT

Lemme take care of this one for u beautiful

That meme of someone pointing a gun at the sun. ALT

Anyways! Some experiment with jmagnus and harsh lighting. I honestly didn’t know what I was doing and am not super happy with how it came out but at this point i dunno how to fix it. So. Have at it!

I swear half the time I see posts on here I wonder if people even listened to the same podcast.

Constantly people argue about who would have made a better Archivist while completely missing what the Archivist’s actual role was:

Firstly, Gertrude was not a good Archivist. In fact, her being shit at it was a major plot point. She purposefully left the Archives disorganized to try and stop whatever Jonah was planning. She didn’t like using her compelling powers. She was good at stopping rituals. That isn’t the Archivist’s duty, she just took that on herself. We don’t really know who was ‘stopping’ rituals before her, though we can assume Jonah was at least invested in doing so until he figured out they didn’t work. (I’m also assuming rituals could not happen very often, with perhaps centuries between.)

A good Archivist would be nothing like Gertrude… she wanted to appoint Sasha because she could see they were like-minded and maybe we could extrapolate that Sasha would have gone a similar route in being obstructive to Jonah’s plans

A “good” Archivist would be someone who directly embraced the Eye and willingly took as many live statements as they wanted. I think we can say Jon was decent at the role comparatively.

Do not get being a good Archivist and being good at undermining Jonah’s plans( and the plot of the show) mixed up. Argue all you want about whether x character would have fallen for the ritual… but don’t say they would have been a good Archivist. Because you’re arguing for the opposite

Thinking about Jon mourning his relationship with Elias and doing it alone.

Thinking about Jon having so many little fond memories of Elias. Discussions with him when he still worked in research. Little bickering arguments from when Jon was first promoted. His fondness for scheduling. Thinking about Jon missing those times so much that it aches. Thinking about Jon mourning the person he thought he knew, the person he did know, the connection they always had. When Elias is in prison and won’t even see him. When Elias is in the panopticon above the world, far away from Jon. Thinking about Jon still caring about Elias, missing him despite everything.

Jon would have all those little memories of Elias, I think. And he would pick over them, and wonder which ones were real (all of them, in a way), and which ones were lies (all of them, in a way). And he would never be able to say anything. Because he’s the only one who ever had that connection to Elias, and by the time Elias is out of Jon’s reach nobody who would understand is left.

Just. Just thinking of Jon mourning his relationship with Elias, and having to do it alone.
