I REPEAT, THEY GAVE HANS A BIGGER PART.
Let me explain.
I just got back from watching Frozen on Broadway.
You know how in the movie, Hans has a pretty small part, and there’s always something slightly off-putting about how he acts towards Anna? Other than the first time they meet, it seems like he’s trying a bit too hard to copy how she acts, which makes the final reveal that he’s actually a villain less surprising.
Well guess what.
They changed that.
Now they gave him a bigger part- and, in my opinion, improved it.
Everything he said and did was “genuine”- to the extent that anyone who didn’t watch the movie had no reason to believe that he had any ulterior motives or bad intentions. He had an entire song where he introduced himself- and even though I watched the movie, it made me question if he was actually an antagonist like he was in the movie. Up until the very moment when he says his famous line of betrayal- “If only there was someone out there who loved you”- a part of me was questioning if he was truly evil. Which, in my opinion, is 100 times better than any antagonist who you know from the start is evil. He has so many moment where I thought “ok, now the facade’s gotta slip now, right??” BUT IT DIDN’T.
SO, in conclusion, THANK YOU FOR IMPROVING THE SHOW BY GIVING HANS A BIGGER AND BETTER PART.
Ok I was half asleep when I wrote that- let me clarify.
Hans isn’t flirty towards Anna or charismatic towards everyone else, he’s just “himself”- someone just as awkward and funny as Anna. This made his eventual betrayal more intense.
And this is why I like broadway frozen more than movie frozen.
