Edgar: What sign are you most compatible with?
Edmund: The dollar sign.

hi! i followed u for tcomc content but you got me curious about Shakespeare plays, what would you suggest me to start with? also english is not my first language but i'm really good at it by this point, do you think i'll have problems understanding the manuscript in english or should i look it up in my mother tongue?

Hi! I personally would recommend starting off with Shakespeare’s more famous plays (such as Macbeth, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet) and seeing if you like them, and if you do you should go on to reading the more obscure ones. I personally have a hard time figuring out what on earth Shakespeare is saying sometimes, and English is my first language, so I’d recommend reading it in whatever language you’re most comfortable reading things in. However, if you’re up for the challenge, you can go ahead and try reading it in the original Shakespearean English. If you have trouble with that (tbh I have trouble with that too sometimes), you can look up with certain lines mean on sparknotes (I’ll add a link to that later).

Romeo and Juliet but told in “it’s more likely than you think” memes

Part maybe 5 or 6- I’m not really sure at this point

Hmmmm……

How would you rank the Shakespeare plays that you have read?

edettethegreat:

edettethegreat:

I’m gonna go in the order I read them-

The Tempest: 5/10. Not so into the storyline. There where some good parts but not enough of them for me to rank it higher than that

The Merchant of Venice: 6/10. Also good but the antisemitism kinda ruined it for me (I know other plays are also racist and discriminatory but the racism is either  a) clearly a bad thing- you’re not supposed to root for the racist character, or b) a passing comment made by a side character that’s pretty much never brought up again.)

Macbeth: 7/10 Very good story, not funny enough. You maybe be wondering “but edette, it’s a tragedy! It’s not supposed to be funny!” To which I will respond with “oh yeah? Then what’s Hamlet doing here, being hilarious, with jokes on every other line until the last few pages where everyone dies?”

Julius Caesar: 7.5/10. Mark Antony’s parts are fantastic. He’s all like “oh yeah I’m totally on your side- I totally support you killing MY BEST FRIEND, THIS NOBLE ROMAN WHO DIDN’T DESERVE TO DIE, HOW DARE ANYONE KILL HIM” and everyone’s like “hey Antony? You still with us?” And he’s like “Oh yeah totally, what makes you think I’m not?”

King Lear: 8/10. It’s so good. Edmund’s plan isn’t even good, but it works so incredibly perfectly because everyone is very stupid.

Hamlet: 9/10 It’s hilarious. I don’t care what you say about it being deep and meaningful. Yeah it has some soliloquies, but most of it is just a huge pile of jokes. Literally the funniest thing I’ve ever read. The only people who think Hamlet isn’t hilarious are the people who’ve watched some film version of it before reading the play.

I know I haven’t read that many Shakespeare plays yet, but my local bookstore is reopening tomorrow, so I’m gonna go and see if I could find a copy of Othello and Twelfth Night

Also I just noticed that the ratings go in order of worst to best- that was unintentional but also kinda interesting

OK I’m changing my rankings of The Tempest and The Merchant of Venice to be 4/10 and 5/10 respectively.

I just read Romeo and Juliet and I’m putting it in at 6/10. It was good but not better than the ones ranked above it.

I’m also changing King Lear’s rank to 8.5/10

Finished 12th night- it gets a 5/10

I liked all the characters but I found the overall plot to be more boring than some of the plots of other Shakespeare plays

Iago’s like a cartoon villain- it’s great. He’s literally like “haha I’m gonna lie to EVERYONE now. And you can’t stop me”

And then everyone (other than Emilia) is like “wow. What a trustworthy dude. So honest. I trust that guy with my life.”

Me: *waits for like 3 specific people to get online before posting posts I want them to see*

For some reason the TCOMC fandom on here has been slowly growing over the past few days. I’m not sure why but hey at least I’m not alone here anymore

BONUS:

a friend that I only see once a year: you know, these parties are great.
me: yup.
that friend: ya know why?
Me: of course.
My friend, simultaneously with me: because I get to see you!
Me, simultaneously with my friend: because they have great food!

Reading Titus Andronicus now and wow these guys really like killing people don’t they?

https://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/180/the-count-of-monte-cristo/

You all have no excuse now- go read it.

(Also @eddisfargo you can check how to spell chapter names now if you want to- though tbh you’re pretty good at spelling them even without seeing them)

I look around the people currently active in the TCOMC fandom and all I see are like 5 different accounts obsessing over Villefort.

Like look, I get it- corrupt politicians are cool to some people- but if the King Lear fandom were to ever read TCOMC, all the people from there obsessing over Edmund of Gloucester would be obsessing over Benedetto and you’d be outnumbered

So yeah I’m just gonna patiently wait for that to happen

answering the question everyone has- “Why on earth does Edette have such horrible taste in characters?”

Ok so here’s some points to have in mind when you realize that I normally like really horrible characters:

( @eddisfargo dw there aren’t any spoilers here- I decided to finally justify my (admittedly) horrible taste in characters)

- my favorite character ISN’T the one I love the most, it’s the one that has the best scenes or lines, or the one who’s story I was the most invested in. For example, in TCOMC I was very invested in Andrea’s story, so he became my favorite. If I would choose the character I love the most it would either be Beauchamp, Albert, or Franz.

- Sometimes I like characters not because of anything they themselves did, but rather because they share similar opinions as me on the other characters in the book/show. If I already dislike certain characters and like other characters, and a new character comes along and shares those opinions, chances are I’m gonna like the new character.

- the character’s cool/smart/talented in some way and I’m interested in seeing more content of them

Ya know I tried to make this longer but honestly that’s it. Everything else I have to say can be summed up using point 1, 2, 3, or some combination of the 3.

For example, to justify the 5 characters in my top 5 male characters thing I posted a few days ago-

Edmund of Gloucester- point 1

Ash Lynx- point 3

Max- point 3

Andrea Cavalcanti- point 1 and kinda point 2

Yohan Lee- point 3

(Normally there would be more point 2s on the list, it just happens to be that it doesn’t apply to these characters that much)

eddisfargo:

you: this is so sad, alexa play despacito

shakespeare in pericles, prince of tyre act iii, scene 2: the rough and woeful music that we have, / cause it to sound, beseech you.

@edettethegreat in case you haven’t seen this already!

This is great and I love it

TCOMC characters as things my friends have said so often it’s basically their catchphrase

Evereyone, about Hermine: wow, Ben’s cheating on Mikaela again.

Chateau-Renaud: GUYS. ALASKA RHYMES WITH NEBRASKA.

Any of the antagonists: As everyone knows, I’m secretly the world’s most evil criminal

Franz after the drug cave incident: It was all a dream? Nah, it was all a hallucination.

Caderousse: *chanting* SALT! IT’S SALT! AND HERE’S WHAT NO ONE KNOW! WE’LL USE THE SALT TO DO ASSAULT AND POUR IT UP YOUR NOSE!

Benedetto at his trial: It’s me, your local non-existent ghost.

Albert: Ok so I was kidnapped like maybe… 12 times today?

Also Albert: Contrary to popular belief, I’m not a complete idiot

Eugenie, while chopping off her hair to disguise herself as a boy: You just don’t know the absolute STRUGGLE of curly hair. You just. Don’t. Know.

(I had SO MANY MORE, but I had to delete them because I had no idea which character they would fit with. It was truly tragic. It was very sad. Alexa, play despacito.)

Can I just say. Edmund from King Lear and Benedetto from TCOMC are the same person, just put in different situations.

No kidding. It’s true. Lemme prove it.

Ok let’s start with Edmund. If instead of raising him to whatever extent Gloucester raised him, Gloucester would have been like “whoops this kid sure is a mistake that could potentially be bad for my reputation!” And tried to kill him when he was an infant to cover his tracks, we’d literally just end up with Benedetto instead of Edmund. Are you gonna tell me that if Edmund survives and finds out about that whole attempted murder thing he wouldn’t go find Gloucester and publicly be like “yeah so that guy’s my dad. Also he tried to kill me because he was scared that having a kid out of wedlock might ruin his reputation. Well how’s your reputation looking now, dad?”

And now onto Benedetto. If instead of trying to kill him, Villefort left him alive and raised him with Valentine, he totally would have become salty that Valentine was favored above him and he would definitely not like that Valentine is getting all the inheritance money. So of course he’d pull the same thing Edmund pulled, ie. telling Valentine something like “oh no dad is just soooo mad at you! You gotta leave immediately!” And he’d have no trouble forging a letter from Valentine that says “I sure hate dad!” (After all, he’s literally a counterfeiter.) Villefort would believe it right away, (after all, he believed Dr. D’avrigny (or whatever his name was) that Valentine was the killer) and that would be that.

In conclusion- Benedetto=Edmund and Edmund=Benedetto

So that’s that.

CoMC Chapter 67

eddisfargo:

CHAPTER 67

At the Office of the King’s Attorney

30 minutes

Oooh shoot, the situation has changed–Villefort knows MC is not his friend. Because it turns out he is fully aware there was no baby skeleton buried in the yard for him to find. He tried to dig it up a year after the fact and found it gone. And he even knows it was surrendered to the orphanage and he EVEN knows it was claimed by some lady (although he couldn’t find the lady). And he even knows it’s Andrea Cavalcanti!

Just kidding about that last part, he definitely does not know that.

Interesting monologue about doing regrettable things in a moment of fear that you realize later you could’ve done differently, that clearly applies to what he did to Poor Edmond. Which ends with him saying women don’t feel remorse because there mistakes aren’t due to their own actions, just things that have been done to them. As a woman, oh yeah, that’s definitely my experience. Yup, you’ve got us pegged, Dumas. I mean, I guess it’s not quite fair to attribute a Villefort quote directly to Dumas–he’s a villain, after all, not necessarily a mouthpiece for the author–but this monologue kind of seemed like actual philosophy, not something the narrative was denouncing. But who knows.

Also, we hear the story about Bertuccio’s failed murder–it wasn’t mistaken identity after all, he was only mostly dead.

Also, glad I never tried to spell Mrs. Danglars’s name. Sounds like Ermine, which is an animal and sounded silly so I never wrote it. Turns out it’s (probably) Hermine, hence the H on the baby’s blanket.

Anyway, Villefort is now going to try to figure out just who TF this Monte Cristo guy is. I wonder if MC knows that that particular part of the jig is up…

Also. Importantly. It seems like they totally didn’t intentionally kill the baby? They just thought it was dead and buried it in secret? Which, to me, is… not what infanticide is? I think the evidence MC presented at the dinner party when that possibility was presented was “if it wasn’t murder, why did they bury it in a box in the yard like a hamster? This was never a cemetery.” but obviously we know it’s because it’s an affair baby they’d rather keep secret (although it seems like the husband kind of figured it out when he came home to a very pregnant wife, and he did in fact kill himself in shame, so… there’s that).

But anyway, what passes for infanticide, then? Just… not baptizing it or whatever? Or is it just that they can’t prove it wasn’t? Or… I don’t know, but it seems (operative word) like no one attempted murder after all. Except Bertuccio lol.

You’re right that’s too funny to be in tags. That’s why I gotta reblog it.

I gave up on this pretty quickly but hey- it’s the concept that matters. You guys get it

Credit to @eddisfargo for the idea

OK POLL TIME

What color hair do you picture Hamlet having?

Can I just... obsess over Cassio’s role in Othello for a second?

(Please excuse any stupidity you may find here- it’s currently 3am and I don’t know what I’m doing)

OK so Iago has this whole big fat evil plan for how he’s gonna take down Othello. And he’s doing this whole big fat evil plan with little to no motives. Yeah, he heard a rumor that his wife may have cheated on him with Othello, but ehhh the rumor doesn’t seem to be even remotely true. (His wife might have cheated on him with someone else- I’m not saying that would be completely impossible- but probably not with Othello. Othello’s pretty loyal to Desdemona.)

His only other complaint is against the fact that Othello gave Cassio the job that he was after. So logically speaking, shouldn’t Iago make his main mission to destroy Cassio rather than destroy Othello? Because if he gets rid of Cassio, he could possibly get the position he wanted. But if he gets rid of Othello, how would that solve anything? Anyway, if this were about anyone other than Iago, I’d say that he was just an idiot. But this is about Iago- the guy who knew how to manipulate everyone into doing everything he wanted. So Idk I don’t believe he’s all that stupid.

Now ya know how I promised this would be about Cassio? Well it is. Because the thing is I find Cassio’s whole part in the play to be really, really funny. Mainly because of how he reacts to Iago vs how everyone else reacts to Iago. He, along with Othello and Rodrigo, are the main three people Iago tries to manipulate. When it came to Othello and Rodrigo, he had to come up with ways to convince them of whatever he was trying to pass off as the truth. And they questioned him, but he was still able to prove that he totally has no ill intent towards them. BUT WITH CASSIO, HE HARDLY HAD TO SAY ANYTHING. It’s like it didn’t even matter what he said or did, Cassio was gonna do the thing Iago wanted done anyway. Iago didn’t even have to manipulate Cassio like he had to do with everyone else- and around halfway through the play Iago realizes this and stops trying to convince Cassio to do things he’s probably gonna do anyway.

Seriously, their conversations go like this-

Iago: Hey do you maybe wanna drink some more-

Cassio: OH MAN I THINK I’M GONNA REALLY PARTY TONIGHT AND DRINK SOME MORE

Iago: Hey you should maybe talk to Des-

Cassio: HEY I’M GONNA GO TALK TO DESDEMONA AND ALSO RUN AWAY WHENEVER I SEE OTHELLO COMING BECAUS THAT WOULD BE AWKWARD YA KNOW?

And then Iago realizes that hey, Cassio doesn’t need to be manipulated for his plot to work- he can just let Cassio be himself and everything would turn out just the way he planned.

Me: hmm yes it’s probably around 8:20 now
the clock: you idiot. You absolute buffoon. It’s 10:30.

should I start a series “Monte Cristo but as texts?” Which would literally just be screenshots of my friends texts with tcomc names put over them?

Well, if money isn’t an issue then why not freaking everywhere? I’m kidding, I’ve always wanted to go to Germany, Australia, and England, but I really want to see as much as I can. I’ve heard Iceland is an amazing place, too. I do think it would be fun to hike as many national parks as possible, and the equivalent in countries across the world. I know that isn’t terribly specific, but I just want to see as many amazing things as I can, see what my parents have seen, and maybe go a step or two further.

Thanks for the ask Anon! That was fun to think about! Let’s make a chain out of it shall we?

I was supposed to go to London and Paris back in May but Covid changed that, so I would like to go there.

I would also like to visit the Vatican, I want to see just how small it is.

Cape Town seems so pretty to visit as well

Oh and I want to visit the palaces in Thailand and Malaysia.

Probably San Francisco as well for America

And I want a time machine to take me to the library of Alexandria

I’m going to tag @royal-rickardian @edettethegreat @callifornia @argeriant18

OK SO

I was just going through old papers from school, and I came across one of the short stories we had to read- The Use of Force by William Carlos Williams.

When we read it in school, my class and teacher couldn’t agree on an interpretation of the story. Some people (me included) found the doctor in the story to be incredibly creepy. Others thought he was doing his best and the young girl was being unnecessarily difficult.

To anyone else who read it- please tell me your interpretation

STILL going through old things- and I found THIS AMAZING WORD DOCUMENT.

Younger me was a comedy genius.

I strive to be as funny as her.

yes @edettethegreat oh my god you have to please oh my actual literal god please please it’s so good please yes

You’ll never guess which movie I just finished watching.

(Hint: It starts with “The”, ends with “Guard”, and maybe, possibly, has “Old” in the middle)

my overall thoughts while watching The Old Guard. They’re in order so I’ll be giving no context for them. Just word for word what I wrote down while watching.

( @sargent-major-jane it was a good movie thank you so much for posting about it)

*MOVIE STARTS*

-Hmm everyone’s already dead.

-I wonder why it’s called The Old Guard

-This looks like a sketchy drug deal or something. Motorcycle dude and backpack girl- no wait it’s not drugs it’s Don Quixote

-Idk what they’re talking about I thought they were immortal not time traveler (<- this was me not realizing just how old these guys are exactly)

-OOH NICE MOVE WITH THE SELFIE SWAP

-Is the girl in charge? IS SHE? … YES SHE IS!!!

-When the guy waved at the sniper dude. THAT was funny.

-”hmmm yes I’ll use my infrared goggles to- oops I’m dead”

-aaaaand they’re dead. Oh well.

-WAIT THAT’S THE SHOT FROM THE OPENING!

-They’re very much not dead.

-I sure hope protagonists’ team kills the other team

-Is she fighting with a fancy ax or something now?

-If cool soldier lady dies I’m not gonna continue watching.

-Didn’t she say Paris? (<- this was resolved about a second after I wrote it)

-Nile would be excellent at Cinema Sins

-Nile’s in de-NILE hahahahaha

- “what are you gonna do- kill me?” HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

-woah this guy’s poetic (<- the dude who gave the whole love speech)

-I LOVE these guys

-If it turns out that the Mona Lisa is actually her that would be cool

-This guy’s a neat antagonist. He doesn’t look intimidating. But he sure loves stabbing people.

-I like this cashier

-If Andy dies that would be tragic, Alexa don’t play despacito

-WAIT. They won’t ALL die, right??

-This movie isn’t supposed to be this sad

- Ooooh extra dude’s a traitor!

-I was wondering when that extra dude would get interesting

- “Your time is coming” “As is yours” Yeah you guys better kill fluffy hair dude

- that dude: “I thought it would be the end of disease” Nile: “ :/ ”

-No Andy. Stop. You’re dying you idiot.

-WHAT’S WITH THE DRAMATIC MUSIC

-All I want is for Andy or Nile to kill the fluffy hair dude

-Andy you buffoon. Let Nile protect you.

-Nile. Don’t listen to Andy. Go first.

-Oh. Neither went first. Nice compromise

- “I will kill her!” WILL YOU, FLUFFY HAIR??? WILL YOU??

- YES. THIS IS A GOOD WAY TO END A MOVIE.

-So NOW they’re in Paris. Or at least one of them is.

- OH SHE’S BACK! Is this setting it up for a sequel?

When we read it in school, my class and teacher couldn’t agree on an interpretation of the story. Some people (me included) found the doctor in the story to be incredibly creepy. Others thought he was doing his best and the young girl was being unnecessarily difficult.

To anyone else who read it- please tell me your interpretation

I hadn’t read it before but I just did and here’s what I think:

The doctor is indeed doing his best to begin with, and appears to be against the use of force to begin with (his disgust at the parents when they tell the girl the doctor won’t hurt her because he doesn’t want to scare her). However, any objections he has to violent behavior quickly goes away in the face of the girl’s violent reaction to him.

This is where he starts to get incredibly creepy, as with the help of two other grown adults he wrestles a child for what seems to be a significant portion of time to get a spoon in her mouth, severely injuring her by completely ignoring her lack of consent. At first he seems to be justifying it as being for the greater good of her health but he also admits to enjoying it pretty soon after.

The way the wrestling part is written reminds me of bits of other stories where there is a hunt or a grand battle where our narrator must triumph over an evil adversarial force and the surge of adrenaline makes them feel alive and ‘savage’. The narrator says he admires the girl more for her ferocity as the match between them goes on. He looses sight of the reason he’s there and what he’s actually trying to do.

I think the point of the short was that it’s easy to justify the use of force when you are in a position of power even if you consider yourself someone who works for the good of other people and that there was a great adversary for the doctor to beat during the wrestling match but it wasn’t the little girl, it was his own desire to obtain her compliance through the use of force. While he wins the wrestling match against the girl eventually, he ultimately loses to his actual foe, himself.

As for the little girl, considering she has 3 days worth of bacterial matting on the back of her throat which probably sucks, and also 3 whole grown adults trying to push her around while she’s hurt and scared I’d say she was acting perfectly reasonably. The fact that she wasn’t obeying someone in a position of power doesn’t mean that the use of force is justified but we’re also only given the POV from the doctor. That makes it easy for us to empathize with him and come down on his side even if his side ends up creepy and abusive.

Again this leads me to believe that the point of the story is to show just how easy it can be to justify the use of force, because since we’re completely sunk into the doctor’s POV we are with him in a position of power. We are with him in that our ideal resolution to the situation is that the girl does as she is asked and opens her mouth so she can receive a diagnosis and treatment. So we are with him (largely) when he decides to use force, and some folks may be with him the whole way to the end.

I think if you were to rewrite this short from the perspective of the little girl, her fear at both the doctor and the punishment of disobedience, her rising revulsion at the thought that she is helpless here between 3 people who no matter what they say do not wish to listen to her and help her, you’d have far less people thinking that the doctor was being reasonable.

HOWEVER YES YOU’RE RIGHT I FORGOT MANY CAESAR CHARACTERS IN THE HONORABLE MENTIONS!

-Honorable mention to Brutus and Cassius
-(but mainly to Brutus because he’s just trying his best to help Rome and it’s not his fault he’s gullible and has bad friend)

(Kinda like Othello, who’s also trying his best to just live his life and it’s not his fault he’s gullible and has bad friends)

richard is yet another younger son with bastard energy who becomes duke of gloucester by shady means and has the best monologues ever in which he plans to murder his entire family to gain power

also yes brutus and cassius have some rights but mostly brutus cassius is just gay and dramatic so i’m willing to forgive him

Huh he sounds like my type of character! I look forward to reading about him!

(The REAL question is would he have gotten along with Edmund, or would they see each other as rivals and fight to the death or something?)

(Also I linked the Cassio post but apparently you gotta go back to the original ask post to see the link)
