Liking a villain character is cool but it also sucks ass cause there’s always ppl that are like ‘aw no precious baby did nothing wrong UWUWUUWUW’ like no asshole they’re bad that’s why I love them leave me alone
hey anyone out there who’s actively in the king lear fandom (as if we have a fandom), if you ever made edmund content just tag me in the comments pleaseeeeee
see there’s one specific reading of hamlet that I need and adore, and am always looking for in any production
when hamlet’s calling the ghost. by the line “I’ll call thee Hamlet, King, father, royal Dane” (usually the “royal dane” part is cut from productions)– I need each title to be said with increasing uncertainty and desparation
“I’ll call thee Hamlet!”
“King!”
“…father?”
and when ‘father’ is said with infinite softness.
and 'father’ is said with yearning and longing and grieving.
and hamlet is reaching out to his father, who is standing right in front of him and won’t respond.
kinda always wanted some significant historical event to happen on my birthday but with how things are going now– I’m gonna hold off on wishing for that this year
i think the worst thing in the world is seeing two characters with something weird as hell going on between them and you think to urself “wow i love the weird as hell thing these characters have going on between them” and you open archiveofourown.org and find out everyone else thinks they would actually be in a very normal romantic relationship
My fairly niche Much Ado About Nothing take is that Don John should be a teenager. Give me sulky teen Don John being dragged along by his much older half brother. He’s “not of many words” because he doesn’t want to be there, and he’s on his phone in every group scene. Conrade and Borachio are his little high school buddies who suck. Everyone else is having a great time as twenty-/thirty-year-olds and Don John is bored out of his mind and decides to cause problems on purpose.
having an absolute time going through old files on my computer and found a TCOMC parody of Say My Name from Beetlejuice where the count is explaining to andrea the plan of being overdramatic about names in court cases

Jamie Parker’s take comes pretty close to this!
I’ll call thee Hamlet (Act I)Jamie ParkerBBC Radio 4
I could never forget how broken up he sounds near the end.
feeling ill thinking about about how in the robert icke version of hamlet they changed laertes’ “this sword is too heavy, let me see another” to be him wanting to switch out the poisoned sword and trying desperately to stop the tragedy rather than asking for the poisoned blade. an adaptation so compassionate the characters themselves are trying to break free from the tragedy and still can’t
a female character does something terrible and some people can’t afford to consider her own personal tragedy. so they make her a girlboss. #feminism. but she’s as tragic as the rest of them.
I find it weird that every time people personify the Seven Deadly Sins, they’ll make six of them portray the doer (someone who IS angry, someone who IS slothful, etc), but then they go to Lust and portray them as object being acted upon (someone OTHER PEOPLE would lust after).
Like honestly it would be more accurate to make them some scruffy white dude with a fedora than a sexy girl with curves.
This speaks to me on a deep level.
Thank you for this
but I’m so drawn in by the alternative, where each of the seven deadly sins is a temptation upon those around them to commit those sins.
lust is whatever you’d be most attracted to.
wrath is one of those obnoxious guys who always purposely misunderstands any complaint you may have to twist your words into something entirely different.
greed is a very naive person who’s constantly in situations where people would take advantage of the naiveté. Constantly forgetting valuables in crowded places too.
sloth is a caring(?) friend who keeps encouraging you to rest and ditch responsibilities.
envy is the rich, charismatic, valedictorian who has their life together and is clearly moving on to bigger things.
gluttony is a grandma who offers everyone more food than they could eat.
pride is someone who’s just slightly worse than you at everything. the classic rival type who’s always one step behind.
idk idk I just think ‘thou nature art my goddess’ is in conflict with 'the excellent foppery of the world.’ and I think he’s being sarcastic. I think he’s saying “well ok if y'all are so insistent on me being born evil, I guess you’re right. I was just born evil. you’re so right about everything, I’m gonna go follow the script you set out for me, ok?”
“hamlet depression” this “goodnight sweet prince” that when I was a sophomore I begged my english teacher to let me write a monologue for banquo’s ghost and then she told me it sounded gay
I hate those hamlet polls going around asking, for example, “was Gertrude unfaithful to king hamlet?” because I can’t just pick “yes” or “no.” Truthfully I think both are true. Something I love about Hamlet is that there are so many ways to read and understand it. I cannot definitely say one reading is correct over another (albeit with some exceptions) because each production that does something unique with the reading has something different to say and I love that! Maybe in one production Hamlet really loves Ophelia, maybe in another she really wasn’t all that important to him. Maybe in one production Gertrude cheated on King Hamlet, maybe in another she really did love him.
Theatre is versatile like that and it’s part of what makes it so special
and if Gertrude was cheating on King Hamlet, I’d want it to have been going on for long enough for Hamlet to have to question whether Claudius could be his biological father
just for an extra layer of drama and complication in the Drama And Complications Play
see they tend to both be guilty of the same stuff. love forging letters that get people killed. love getting into duels that get themselves killed. have messy relationships with those around them. people who are trying to defend them get poisoned. their primary adversaries are blood relatives. they’re both into performing and acting. Enjoy lying and bluffing so much.
Edmund was the Earl for a solid 5 seconds there and that’s something we collectively forget so easily
like it’s so easy to just think Edmund the Bastard and forget Edmund, Earl of Gloucester
If act 1 Edmund could see act 5 Edmund, he’d be so proud. He wouldn’t even care that he ultimately died– he won. He got the Earldom, he got two of the King’s daughters romantically pursuing him, he’s the most powerful person in England through those things alone.
I feel like the teeny tiny King Lear fandom is very Edmund focused (or maybe I'm stuck in an echochamber), so it's nice to see Edgar getting some appreciation as well
