the real horror is a months or years long time loop. no speedrunning your torture here. you have to sit with the consequences of your actions for a loooong time before the release of knowing the consequences and actions have been erased.
but oh, all the actions and consequences are gone. those relationships you built? empty. you can never build them again without the constant guilt of knowing that it’s not as real the second, third, thirtieth time when you already know all their secrets and they none of yours.
but you can’t hide. you can’t isolate yourself because what if this is the time the loop breaks and then what? years gone by of missed chances with people who have changed you a thousand times and now circumstances have changed. you can never build back what was washed away by your own inaction. they’ll never be able to meet you like they did the first time if you don’t choose to meet them the first time every time
look edmund’s one single line in 2.2 is so important.
he’s constantly playing the part of the peacekeeper up until act 5.
he’s acting as an intermediary between edgar and gloucester to supposedly try to resolve the conflict.
he’s constantly justifying edgar to gloucester and warning edgar of the danger he’s in
he’s so so sorry that he has to turn in his father to cornwall– he’s only doing it because he’s so loyal to his country that he has to turn against his father to protect his home
these are all crucial parts of the role he’s trying to play.
so him hearing a fight outdoors and immediately running out to break it up– while he’s injured! right after he just got injured protecting his father! – is so important.
he’s playing the role of the peacekeeper. and he’s deeply in character.
whenever I get overly judgmental about cut lines I remember that broadway Romeo and Juliet cut the part where capulet says ‘go invite these guests to the party’ and the guy goes 'but.. I can’t read :(’
the most annoying people are people who don’t understand storytelling. they be like “oooo how convenient that this thing happened to the main character in the very beginning”. yeah no shit. that’s why the story begins here

excellent addition to this!!
“light is cocky” ✅ correct observation
“light wouldn’t have gotten caught if he wasn’t cocky” ✅ also correct observation
“light wouldn’t have gotten caught if he wasn’t so cocky, and therefore making him cocky was a bad writing decision” ❌ no. do you hate stories? do you hate when plot happens? because no plot would happen if characters didn’t have defining personality traits that motivate their actions
a gentleman’s guide to love and murder 🤝 operation mincemeat
a british musical with some level of genderblind casting where member(s) play multiple roles and the plot is driven by a guy named monty being impulsive and charismatic (in a cringefail boyloser sort of way)
omg of course!! thank you so much for the ask! i love him!!!
favorite thing about them: good ol’ larry! i love his hypocrisy! he warns ophelia against hamlet while presumably dallying with others. what a guy! i like how much he cares for his family and would do anything for them, even if he could take like half a page from hamlet’s book and stop and think for just a second.
least favorite thing about them: he’s in france for most of the play :c
favorite line: this is so hard because i have several! i think i will go with: I tell thee, churlish priest, a ministering angel shall my sister be, when thou liest howling!
brOTP: hamlet and laertes! i love them as friends! i know a lot of people see them as rivals and i think there’s validity in that but i think it’s more of a friendly rivalry, personally! i think it makes their deaths at each other’s hands cut deeper.
OTP: osric and laertes have known one another intimately i’m sure of it. i don’t think osric was acting whenever he was talking about how great laertes is. i am out of my mind for this, perhaps
nOTP: laertes and horatio. i personally do not see it. maybe i’m crazy.
random headcanon: while laertes is loyal to his family to a fault, he is glad for his freedom in france. he doesn’t envy people like hamlet who have their lives determined for them. his time at university is spent at his studies and fencing but he does have a love of partying and this has led him to attend lectures with a pounding headache.
unpopular opinion: i don’t really agree that laertes and hamlet had a romantic/sexual relationship. i can see why people do think that but it doesn’t fit in with the narrative in my head which we all know is gospel /j
song i associate with them: dirty imbecile by the happy fits! i also have this on my hamlet playlist
favorite picture of them: i don’t have many pics of him but i love luke treadaway as laertes ;_; he’s pictured here with kirsty rider as ophelia!
WOOOO Thank you for your laertes opinions!!
I love laertes a totally reasonable amount and I love how much thought you’ve given his character–
now I’d love to read a full length fanfic of what laertes was doing in france
I’ve just read ‘Beyond Top Secret U’ - Ewen Montagu’s autobiography of his time during WW2 and he is just as chaotic as the musical depicts him.
He refers to Godfrey throughout almost exclusively as 'Uncle John’
He nearly went blind in 1941
Basically calls Bevan’s team useless at their jobs and calls Bevan himself 'unfortunate’ (even funnier knowing they hated each other and Monty wrote a two page long rant about him and why he should be fired)
Asked to be released from the Navy so he could join the German Navy when they refused to promote him because they couldn’t be told about the work he was doing
When he first joined MI5 people got him confused with Ivor who they were already keeping tabs on as he was possibly Soviet spy
He says that he wrote the man who never was in a weekend
He also at one point talks about being given an automatic pistol to wear in a shoulder holster because he rode his bike to work everyday, with top secret documents chained to the basket.
(there are more but these were things that stood out to me when reading the book)
i mean i do understand that on some basic level mean girls is somewhat a julius caesar retelling but it’s not enough we can do better. sororities and toga parties are RIGHT THERE. julie just led her sisters to victory at the 24 hour danceathon for charity. but cass is concerned she’s getting a big head after many of the other girls express their willingness for julie to name herself president even though they’ve vowed not to have one. so cass enlists (seduces?) julie’s (platonic?) best friend brooke for help……
reblog with your major or the way that you mostly interact with shakespeare (acting vs watching vs reading) and whether or not you say macb*th
ik this post is ancient but I’m curious about my beloved mutuals
(business communications major, mainly read and see live theater productions (not a fan of most movie versions of shakespeare), of course I say macbeth, didn’t know there was a large amount of real people out there who don’t say it. I thought it was like. an exaggerated joke)
i feel like malcolm falls into the same category as edgar of characters that are often portrayed as the righteous paragon legitimate heirs who come up with clever well-thought-out plans to escape the danger they’re in and ultimately come back to win the day but in reality they’re both actual human disasters who are anything but natural leaders, genuinely have no clue what they’re doing, and are honestly just scared out of their minds
Malcolm 🤝 Edgar
getting accused of trying to/succeeding to kill their own father
running away when things go wrong
rightful heir to a noble title that’s taken by the antagonist
pretends to be something they’re not to avoid the main conflict and for self-protection
is only motivated to come back and solve the conflict when things get exponentially worse
we’re going to have an OLDER BROTHER summer. we will be drinking MONSTER. we will be LIFTING WEIGHTS. we will be ignoring our MOM. we will be surviving off of CHIPS and NOODLES. we will NOT be SHOWERING. we will only be putting on AXE DEODORANT. we will be bothering PRETTY WOMEN and getting REJECTED.
