ok so i feel like i do have to start my ginger hamlet defense with the fact that im ginger and identify way too strongly with hamlet. so. i mean. i feel like theres a clear root there.
however i do have genuine reasons for ginger hamlet. one is that i dont like blond hamlet very much because men shouldn’t be blond /j and i feel like black haired hamlet is very shoo in gothic. this only changes with 1) dyed hair hamlet (which most blond hair hamelt is anyways) and 2) hamlet played by a POC
anyways, reasons i think hamlet should be ginger:
makes him incredibly visually distinct in group shots and scenes while wearing all black
makes the all black more vivid and mourning-esque because of the pale skin
pale skin would blend in with a marble elsinore (my personal design) while his dark clothes would take him out of it (similarly i think dark skinned ophelia wearing white would have the opposite effect of belonging vs wish to belong)
you cant dye your hair when ginger unless you want to look very ugly so hamlet continues to be trapped in a body/world that he cant change in his favor
if hamlet sr is ginger it’s clear he sees himself in his father. if hamlet sr isnt but claudius is theres that tension of having to see yourself in someone who is terrible
and also lets just shake it up a little. blond hamlet black haired hamlet hes been all of this. ginger hamlet? i could be the first ginger hamlet
I was so neutral up until hamlet’s hair color either matching his father’s or claudius’s. that’s so perfect. I need that.
technically you could do that with any physical feature (including but not limited to hair color, including but not limited to ginger). HOWEVER. I do like how distinct ginger is. And I’m completely on board with your hamlet staging color scheme of black clothes on a white marble set.
