and on that note–

gloucester should share a physical feature with edmund. something not overly noticeable, but something you can’t easily hide. he’s really stuck with physical evidence that edmund is his.

of course the feature could be anything. but given the eye symbolism,, let them both have the same unique eye color.

edmund and his tendency to get stabbed

edmund and his tendency to be the only antagonist to not stab anyone other than himself

also completely separate headcanon re:edmund trial by combat and the line about forgiving edgar if he’s noble–

I do believe that edmund’s kinda overjoyed at the opportunity to actually beat up a noble and get away with it.

the whole play he’s had to work with subterfuge as his primary weapon because there’s no other way for someone of his social status to safely fight the nobility.

but now he’s a noble. and he can, if he so desires, accept this duel and potentially harm a noble with little to no consequence.

so good for him, good for him :)

thinking so many thoughts about a female version of edmund and how much it would change how the audience would perceive her.

because I love generbent shakespeare

I adore female edmund

however when a hot guy is sleeping with everyone in the play, he’s seen as cool

but when a hot woman is sleeping with everyone. well let’s just say people would call her some very rude words :(

I fully understand why edmund/goneril is the more populare ship, but can I interest you in the beauty of edmund/regan

the second child. the overlooked child. who lashes out at the world that favors the eldest by default. neither get the benefits of being doted on as the youngest, as cordelia may have had many years ago, as a legitimate child may have had in the gloucester household–

even as regan openly displays more violence and anger than her sisters, she still can’t catch her father’s attention; he’s busy fixating on his firstborn who betrayed him. Betrayed him by not allowing him to keep one hundred knights in her house. he curses goneril’s name and forgets regan’s.

exactly like how gloucester is with edmund.

hamlet vs king lear

the one where everyone is not paranoid enough and the one where everyone is overly paranoid

can we please compare the duel at the end of hamlet with the duel at the end of king lear

-the person who issues the challenge is trying to avenge their father

-the person who accepts the challenge is begged not to accept it, but insists on fighting anyway

-objectively not a fair fight (rigged match/unidentified disguised opponent)

-someone gets poisoned and dies around the same time

im teaching hamlet rn to my 11th graders

and all of your comparisons are making me want to also teach them king lear which i simply. do not have time for.

it’s ok I think hamlet is the more important play for an 11th grade class to obsess over :)

I think the first time I got really into hamlet was around 11th grade

however– for me personally, I read hamlet in 12th grade english lit, and simultaneously read king lear in AP Lit– and somehow still didn’t make all these (seemingly obvious) comparisons until afterwards

[but if you actually want a way to teach both, I’d say the fastest and simplest solution is to read hamlet thoroughly in class, and then watch a production of king lear so you could make comparisons between the two]

my most toxic trait is i fucking love work gossip. i play neutral not to be the bigger person or take the high road but to hear slander and hearsay from every side. two coworkers complained about each other to me in the same afternoon and i nearly blacked out from the rush

am I the designated edmund blog?

yeah I see you as THE edmund account

someone else is, but I see you as a close runner up

Im from shakespeare tumblr but I don’t see you as one of the edmund accounts

Im from shakespeare tumblr but not from the king lear side of it so idk

Edmund king lear

cordelia could be so interesting if y'all would stop playing her as self-righteous

luna-azzurra:

Forget he was evil. Tell me about the way he smiled when he lied, how he spoke in a voice so soft it made the threat underneath it even sharper. The way he never raised his voice, because he didn’t need to. The way he touched the rim of his glass with a single finger, slow and deliberate, as if already calculating the next move. He doesn’t twirl a mustache; he doesn’t cackle. Real monsters don’t have to.

honestly as much as I’ve never seen a portrayal of any king lear character that I’ve been entirely satisfied with, I fully believe that a really talented and dedicated casting director and staging director would be able to pull it off

or in other words; please let me cast and direct a production of king lear,,,

me every time edmund says anything: So Right So True babe,, go destroy the english nobility <3 <3

@edettethegreat

I’m honored to be thought of when the local Bastard post comes onto your dashboard <3

edmund is just so bad at killing. never even kills anyone. if he’d meet lady macbeth she’d call him some brand new slurs he was never called before.

every time I see a production of king lear that has edmund being a classic mustache-twirling evil-cackling villain it’s like.

no. you don’t get him. you don’t respect him. give my guy enough respect to not turn him into a cartoon villain. he’s got so much more going on.
