Shakespeare TCOMC parallels
OK GUY I KNOW I POSTED THIS A WHILE BACK BUT THERE’S A VERY IMPORTANT ONE I FORGOT TO MENTION.
VILLEFORT IS MACBETH.
Ok that’s that- here are all the connections that have been made in the past:
Maximilien- Romeo
Valentine- Juliet
Franz- Paris (?)
Caderousse’s wife- Lady Macbeth
Benedetto- Edmund of Gloucester
Edouard- that one kid from Coriolanus (?)
Fernand- Othello
Danglars- Iago
Albert- Hamlet
Heloise- Goneril/Regan (?)
Edmond- Macduff
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD TO THIS LIST- I’M SURE EVERY CHARACTER HAS A PRETTY DIRECT SHAKESPEARE PARALLEL
(Credit to team-mom-wannabe for Fernand= othello and Danglars= iago)
What actually is the plot of tcomc?
OK THIS IS GONNA BE A LONG POST
So there’s this guy called Edmond Dantes. He’s the protagonist. He’s living a pretty good life, BUT WAIT! These 2.5 guys are jealous of his half-decent life and decide to plot against him and get rid of him! You’re probably wondering how there could be half a guy. The thing is guy #3 is kinda just There. Like he’s not actively plotting or anything- he’s just hanging out with the 2 guys who are. He actually warns them to stop plotting, but he’s 99% drunk at the moment, so they only pretend to stop plotting to get him to shut up.
ANYWAY. One of the 2 plotters realizes that due to circumstances, it might look like Edmond committed treason. So if someone were to send in a formal accusation against him, chances are he’d be arrested. So yeah they do that.
BUT THE THING IS, the prosecutor appointed to interrogate Edmond/investigate the case isn’t an idiot, and pretty much right away he’s like “yeah it’s pretty clear that you’re innocent and someone’s just trying to set you up.” And for a second there, it looks like everything’s gonna be ok for our good friend Edmond. But unfortunately, mr prosecutor man finds out something that gives him a personal motive for getting Edmond as far away from France as possible (oh yeah I forgot to mention this takes place in France). So he sends Edmond to prison. Oh well.
Stuff happened. Edmond finds a way out of prison. Edmond finds buried treasure and changes him name to THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (hehe that’s the name of the book). Then he goes back to France to start putting the world’s most elaborate revenge scheme into motion.
(Also there’s a canon lesbian couple)
Can I just say- and I know I’ve said stuff like this before but can I just say- Edmund of Gloucester and Andrea Cavalcanti would get along so well. They wouldn’t even try to scam each other. They would just respect each other. They’d be like “hey my dad kinda sucks”
“haha yeah same- he hates me because I’m literally and figuratively a bastard”
“huh. Same. what did you do about it?”
“Oh, so I framed my brother for plotting against him so that he’d make me the heir, and then I accused him of treason and nearly got him killed.”
“woah that’s awesome! all I did was, oh, I don’t know, pretend to be nobility- which by birthright I practically am, my mother was a baroness- to gain the trust of the people of Paris. I kinda stabbed a guy and got caught though. Luckily that father of mine that I mentioned before happened to be the crown prosecutor. So after he was done accusing me of all my crimes, I accused him of his- basically just how he tried to murder me when I was an infant. No big deal. I think he lost his job after that.”
“His job and any respect anyone had for him, right? Yeah, same happened with my dad. I got his title of Earl after he was accused of treason and my brother was out of the picture as well”
“Nice.”
“Nice.”
