Apparently a hot take but anyone who thinks TMA is copaganda missed the entire point of Daisy and Bastira’s character arcs. Simply having characters who are cops and act like human beings instead of cartoon villains does not make a piece of work copaganda.
Daisy is consumed by her violent urges specifically because she refuses to give up the Hunt - which in her case is a huge analogy for the warped values and desires her job has trained into her. Her sense of superiority, her urge to kill first and ask questions never, her disregard for the pain of others. She fights it for a while but in the end she decides she can’t escape what she sees as her true nature, and she becomes a monster as a result.
Basira clings to Daisy and her past as a cop because it’s the only thing that gives her a sense of power and control, but in the end she has to face the truth, which is that she’ll never get better, or even survive, unless she leaves it all behind. So she kills Daisy. In the most literal, on-the-nose way, Basira kills the cop in her head.
The entire narrative purpose of TMA’s cop characters is to illustrate that being a cop is a violent, cruel job that corrupts even the people who start on that path with the intent of doing good. In TMA, the only good cop is a dead cop, or a cop who quit. Come on people. Develop a little media literacy.
