Martin: Has anyone ever told you they love you?
Peter: Does my mother count?
Martin: Yes
Peter: Then no

gender-luster:

“he’s so babygirl coded” (he has killed so many people. and he will kill more)

I like to think deeply about how LonelyEyes would work, but I’m also just like ‘Elias took one look at Peter and decided he needed that snobby rich boy coochie (and also his money)’.

Peter walking into the archives for the first time:

image

I feel like LonelyEyes is the sort of dysfunctional ship where Elias will be fucking Peter into the mattress and try to kiss him and Peter’s like STOP THAT’S TOO INTIMATE and Elias is just like, Peter, I’m balls deep in you and that’s where you draw the line?? So they have an argument about it in the middle of sex. And Elias does not stop fucking him despite the argument because he specifically scheduled this sex time with Peter and he WILL fucking have his sex because it’s been three months since they last saw each other and Peter likes to pretend he has a full calendar despite spending 99% of his time in his cabin doing fuck all.

Peter obviously loses the argument and Elias gets his kiss, but Peter sulks about it for two weeks straight.

Thinking about touch starved Peter again. Touched starved Peter that trembles every time Elias kisses him. Touch starved Peter who pants and shakes just because Elias touches his bare chest or stomach and it’s so, so much for a Lonely avatar. Touch starved Peter who cries during sex because of how overwhelmingly good it is. Touch starved Peter who babbles stupidly during sex and says sweet things he’d never normally say because of how overwrought he is. Elias who keeps on overstimulating touch starved Peter during sex because of how much he enjoys the sweet babbling (and maybe he wants to see if he can get a Lonely avatar to say ‘I love you’).

So Jonah canonically wears the same old ass haircut across multiple vessels, and all I can imagine is someone seeing pictures of the past heads of the Archives and being like ??? at the fact they all have the same haircut and the same grey eyes. And probably the same old suit too, considering Tim’s ’waste of a suit’ comment.

This is definitely the behaviour of a man who likes paperwork.

[showing up at your doorstep looking raggedy and beaten up] I need.... a bit.... Of yours lonely eyes fanfiction please?

Soon!! I’ve got a finished LonelyEyes fic in my drafts. I just need to proofread it a few times before I can post. I’m also working on a longer ‘Somewhere Else: LonelyEyes edition’ fic, but I’m not sure when that one will be finished!

spiderwebteacup:

Jonah Magnus never learned to cook.

Therefore Elias Bouchard, head of the Magnus Institute, London, cannot cook. He never bothered. Having grown up a Victorian Gentleman ™ he considers it to be beneath him.

He has however reached the point where he knows that it’s embarrassing that he doesn’t know how to turn on a stove. (Peter has made fun of him relentlessly). He still refuses to learn, but refuses to be mocked.

And so, the performance begins.

“I’ve seen Elias cook.”

“Did you? Or have you just seen him plate things?”

“But…we’ve cooked together!”

“Really? Or was he standing by the sink, washing one vegetable for over an hour while you did all the work?”

Personally, I think Peter’s the one who’d be confused by a stove. Elias is a very self-sufficient, adaptable man who is happy doing menial work like paperwork. I don’t think cooking is going to be beneath him. I don’t think he’s that vain (actually, I think he’s the opposite of vain; this is a man who was happy being seen as the bumbling, but well-meaning boss for years and a ‘waste of a suit’). Peter, meanwhile, is a lazy little rich boy who sits in his captains cabin all day and has his food delivered to him by his first mate. I can’t really see him cooking when he canonically has food delivered to him 99% of the time, much less being any good at it.

I don’t think Peter would try to hide his inability to cook though. He doesn’t need to know how to work a stove; that’s for peasants people who don’t have enough money to hire personal cooks.

Just some observations about MAG 159.

elias also has the magical power to learn anything he wants at any time and turned towards beholding because of his relentles thirst for forbidden/esoteric knowledge

i find it hard to believe that this is a man who would be incappable of feeding himself and go to these kinds of lengths to hide a skill he could magically implant into his own head whenever he wanted

and even with no beholding powers elias is characterized by a thirst for knowledge, if there was a skill he wanted to have he would relentlessly work toward attaining it

peter never learning to cook and never bothering to try 100% fits with his extremely canon incompetent effete richboy upbringing tho

Just some observations about MAG 159.

image
  • So Peter had two sisters that moved away before Peter could learn their names or know much of anything about them other than that they were a disappointment.
  • Since they moved of their own volition rather than being sent away like Peter’s other siblings, it can be inferred they reached adulthood/an age old enough to leave home while Peter was still a child.
image
  • His other siblings - Aaron and Judith - may have been removed from the home when they were still children as a result of this failure, because they weren’t going to waste their time on children that were going down the same path as the two sisters.
  • Ironic that he talks about his mother not being a cruel woman while also describing the fear and isolation his siblings would have gone through from being uprooted, and also openly admitting his childhood was abusive enough that he and his siblings would have been taken by child protective services.
  • ‘For children that age’ makes them sound very young when they were sent away. Peter was probably an ‘only child’ from a reasonably young age.
image
  • He says their mother stopped conceiving because her husband drifted away, but it seems unlikely that was the only reason, since they definitely weren’t together out of love. I imagine she was getting too old to conceive more children by the point her husband drifted/withered away or just didn’t want to deal with marriage/the associated intimacy anymore.
  • The Lukas’ only marry to propagate the family line, but it seems like some Lukas’, like Peter’s father, aren’t cut out for that kind of cold, loveless marriage. I also get the impression that propagating the family line is considered a family obligation, which doesn’t surprise me because this is very common in cults, which the Lukas’ clearly are. It seems to be an obligation Peter avoided since he spilled his entire life story and never mentioned children, and considering how much he hates connection/intimacy, I imagine he made a deliberate effort to avoid it (kind of hard to push someone into an arranged marriage if they’re out at sea!).
  • (I also like the idea that part of it is because he’s gay, but tbh that’s very hc territory and I imagine Peter just isn’t interested in people in a romantic/intimate fashion.)
  • Very surprising she’s still alive, especially considering the frequency of funerals in the Lukas family.
  • All things considered (his mom being alive, Peter still being a child when his two older sisters left home, growing up with television, and barely having known Jonah as James Wright despite the Lukas’ connection with him and the Institute), I think 44 for Peter makes sense. Which would make his mom 84 in my hc.

what about evan lukas from mag 13: Alone?

i had always assumed peter was his father, probably just having him out of obligation and with all peter’s siblings gone off somewhere else where would evan fit in if peter never had children?

Nah, we’re introduced to Evan’s dad and there’s no indication it’s Peter. Plus, again, Peter doesn’t bring up children nor marriage when he lays out his entire life story. There’s no reason he would mention all his other immediate family but skip over a child when he was being compelled to tell his story.

People usually go for Evan being his nephew, though that doesn’t make much sense since Peter had one brother and they were sent away as a child, and Evan’s father is clearly a Lonely faithful. He’s probably a cousin or some other distant relative. The Lukas family isn’t exactly small; it’s a cult, and there’s a lot of children being born and outsiders being brought into the fold (hence Gerry’s ‘lonely singles’ remark). Even Peter’s mother was someone who hadn’t been born into the family but was nonetheless a Lonely faithful. There’s a lot of family that aren’t named, so it’s easy to imagine Evan could be more of a distant relative.

physical-manifestation-of-spite:

No because I have such a visceral reaction to fanfictions that have the characters do something that they would never do. “He would not fucking say that,” actually causes a genuine physical ailment in my body. The world is caving in on me. I feel sick

I often see people depict Elias as the snobby, prim rich boy between Elias and Peter and here’s my argument for the opposite: Peter canonically talks about being an aristocrat and scion of a powerful household, casually mentions dropping unfathomable amounts of money on personal projects, acts like a spoilt child when he doesn’t get his way, spends all his time on his yacht ship chilling in his cabin and having meals delivered to him, insults Jon by calling him ‘grubby Jesus’ which is just so fucking snobby oh my god, has a family that clearly values appearances, and then there’s his ritual. God, his ritual. I mean:

“I still remember seeing the headline, there in black and white: “The Loneliest Building in Britain.” Trouble is, everyone I picked was white middle-class, so people actually cared, falling over themselves to declare it “emblematic of the problems of the modern world.”

He’s such critical levels of snobby rich boy that his ritual failed specifically because he’s so short-sighted about privilege (he also, like an arrogant little rich boy, insisted on picking people himself despite being surrounded by more qualified people, because of course he did).

Elias, meanwhile, is like a 200 years old man who is referred to as a ‘waste of a suit’, loves paperwork, wears the same haircuts for so long that other people notice how old fashioned they are, and is happy to let his vessels reach middle age and older. He’s an old man who likes paperwork and was able to pretend to be a well-meaning, but somewhat incompetent boss for years. Like, this guy isn’t the snobby rich boy between them; he actively uses Peter’s snobby rich boy status to benefit himself.

@incipientdreamer replied to your post “I often see people depict Elias as the snobby,…”:

They are both snobby little shits. Reason why they are so perfect for each other. Jonah was a rich fuck who decided to meddle in things best left untouched because he believed himself to be the smartest man alive. That is until the Web kicked his ass

I don’t think you understand Jonah as a character very well. Jonah didn’t ‘meddle in things best left untouched because he believed himself to be the smartest man alive’; he meddled in things because he needed to know. He desired knowledge so much, in fact, that he was willing to sacrifice friends in his pursuit of it. There’s a reason he’s aligned with the Eye. One of his defining qualities is also his fear of death; he desired an end to his mortality and he dedicated much of his life to pursuing one. Never is his ego his primary motivation for anything.

Additionally, Jonah is noted to have often worked on his own, to the point that people would implore him to hire more staff to help him, so this is not a man who considers doing his own archiving, paperwork, menial work, etc beneath him. He has no issues being part of the working class and he doesn’t exhibit classism in the same way Peter does.

He’s not a snobby rich fuck. He’s a guy who runs an academic institution that runs on donations.

I find it interesting that Peter states that he believes his two other siblings were merely sent away, yet phrases it at the beginning as "two of my sisters still live." I think he strongly suspects the other two died, but chooses to believe otherwise.

Yeah, that’s a good observation! Honestly, he spends the first half of his statement trying to make excuses for his godawful childhood, so it tracks that he would reach for the least horrific explanation for what happened to his siblings. He acknowledges that he went through horrific shit and then is like ‘BUT IT WASN’T THAT BAD THO’.

podcast-hemocytoblast:

By the time cars were invented, Jonah Magnus was already well into the body hopping game, which raises the question: has he ever actually learn to drive? Did this man sit through driver’s ed? Or has he just been getting out of legal repercussions for his shit driving by telling the cops everything he knows about their deepest darkest secrets every time he gets pulled over?

I do think he takes the tube because, come on, it’s London, but I also believe he would’ve 100% learned how to drive, at least out of curiosity. With regards to the tags of the post, he… doesn’t strike me as pretentious? Jon does explicitly describe him as “austere” in season one, so I don’t think he cares for luxury for its own sake.

I think he’d learn to drive too, and learn to do it well so he didn’t prematurely kill himself on the road. Frankly, he’s probably a better driver than most people given his cumulative experience, and he might have some misgivings about other people driving him around because they wouldn’t have the same degree of experience as him. I can definitely see him taking the tube, though; it’s one of the safest methods of travel and he (generally) doesn’t have to worry about either getting a bad driver or sharing the road with incompetents. That’s my take anyway.

He definitely doesn’t strike me as pretentious either! I’m not sure where fandom gets that, actually. The guy has been happily working in an office for most of his life and subjected himself to prison for over a year; I don’t think luxury is a huge concern to him.

bigfreakinfrog:

people mischaracterize elias so much in this fandom and its so sad. hes been reduced to some snobby pretentious rich child who throws tantrums when he doesnt get what he wants and everyone has decided fanon is what hes like in canon when its just… not?

other than killing lietner hes always calm and collected. he plays his cards close to his chest hes MULTIPLE steps ahead of all the protagonists.

nowhere in canon is he ever spoiled or entitled and its so so much more boring than the actual capable villain that he is

I never really see people talk about the power dynamic between Peter and Elias, and I find it… interesting, and a little sad. Because it’s obvious Peter thinks they’re on somewhat equal ground, while Elias has spent their entire relationship building a cage around him with such expertise that Peter doesn’t even notice the bars. Not once does Elias do something at Peter’s demand. It’s always Peter giving in to Elias, over and over, until he finally sees how trapped he really is - but by then, it’s too late for him to do anything about it.

Just so you know, your lonelyeyes (and peter and elias in general) opinions are some of the best in the fandom imo and i love your work thank you for sharing <3

Aw, thank you. I’m out of step with most of the LonelyEyes fandom, so I appreciate that. ♥️

LonelyEyes rec list

Just sharing some LonelyEyes fic I’ve enjoyed!

Satisfaction by thinkatory | 4k | Complete
Summary: Peter is nothing if not comfortable with the status quo. “Don’t you ever want to try something new, Peter?”
“Like what?” Peter asks, in open sarcasm. “Skydiving?”
“You might take a risk or two beyond the obvious.” Elias hates his fascination with the perfect cut of Peter’s suit, the angle of his jaw, the fullness of his lips. It’s not a singular obsession, but it would be easy to set aside if only Peter wasn’t such a tease. “Isn’t there anything you’ve thought of doing in the last few years that isn’t fooling around with work of the Lukas sort?”
Peter drinks as he muses on that. “I’ve thought about making more trouble for you,” he admits. “Did you want to make a bet? I’d like that.”
This goes about as well as you can imagine.
Notes: A fic about a bet with Elias backfiring on Peter. Beautifully written, with on-point characterisation, entirely believable, and very hot.

Alone at the Edge of the Universe by PossiblyHuman | 20k | Incomplete
Summary: He couldn’t help it. He was twelve, and had never been fond of reading. Perhaps if he had known this would have been his only chance to read this story, he would have paid more attention. Instead, he closed the book, stroking his hands over the coat one more time before hanging it back on the hook branded with his initials. There was a feeling of intense sadness, leaving it there like that. It tore at him, deep in his core as he walked to the door. Basically begging him to go back for it. He ignored it. If he could ignore the cries of his own siblings, a coat would never hold any sort of a sway over him.

(Or, a self indulgent au where the Lukas family are all repressed and cursed selkies, and Peter deigns to ignore that. Until he no longer can anymore.)
Notes: I was completely uninterested in selkie fics until reading this, because it’s just that good.

Simon Says by navree | 5k | Complete
Summary: It is the surety of the sentence, the way that Simon is absolutely convinced in what he says, like it’s the simplest fact.

Five times two very old men discussed the status of a young third party (and the one time that status changed).
Notes: So emotionally devastating that I will never recover. All of this person’s fics are just brilliant, well-written and well-characterised, but this one is just heart-wrenching in a way that you don’t really expect with characters like these. I have to share in the sadness. Bonus: I don’t subscribe to the whole ‘Peter died to protect Elias’ secrets’ hc, but this person’s writing is so good I don’t even care.

A Net of Gossamer by navree | 11k | Complete
Summary: Peter gives James a smile then, as uncharacteristic as anything for a Lukas, though it’s just as sharp as the last time he did, like a mouth filled with knives and hard edges, and though light, filled with mockery. James finds that he doesn’t necessarily mind it.

Notes: Another brilliant fic by Navree! All the compliments for Simon Says applies here too.

Unwanted Looking-After by NevillesGran | 4k | Complete
Summary: Peter all but fell out of the Forsaken, which had never happened before. He had also never been seen—worse, known so intimately. He had never, in his life or worst nightmares, spoken for twenty minutes straight about himself.
“Come now, Peter,“ said Elias. "I’m sure it wasn’t that bad.”

Peter has lost a bet and just barely survived his encounter with the Archivist. His day gets worse from there.
Notes: This fic lives rent-free in my brain. Like the others, magnificent characterisation, well-written, and the ending hit me like a freight train (in a good way. You know, a ‘whao that is an incredibly hot concept I’ve never considered before and I’m adding it to my degeneracy’ sort of way).

365 daily affirmations for healing and positive thinking by serenfire | 5k | Complete
Summary: The florist asks, “So, who should I address these flowers to?”
Martin can’t seem to get the words out. This was, unequivocally, a bad idea.
Georgie gives Martin one last, wicked smile. “
Write: To Peter Lukas. From Elias Bouchard.
This was a really, terribly awful, extremely bad idea, and it’s definitely going to end with Martin’s death.

Notes: Absolutely hysterical.

get off (i’ll only call you after if you say i can) by lewdwizard (sillywizard) | 1k | Complete
Summary: There is a particular flavor of loneliness, Peter thinks, to anonymous sex. Two parties seeking closeness, connection, from a stranger, ending the night in an empty bed with nothing but the hollow satisfaction of an orgasm. The physical closeness plays so nicely off the emotional distance, sharing such intimacy with someone you will likely never see again. It should come as no surprise that, when on land, Peter tends to frequent glory holes.
Notes: Just some hot, hot gloryhole LonelyEyes.

Ready for your use by LonelyPirate | 3k | Complete
Summary: Elias is having a great time. Peter not so much.
Notes: Apparently I really like fics where Peter has Elias’ dick in his mouth. Anyway, hot, well-written, and the concept and execution is just [chefs kiss].
