I’ve talked before about how I hate that tma betrayed its cosmic horror genre by making codification of all things be the tool that takes the Fears down (especially given that the first statement that Jon reads is the fragment about watching and taking notes being useless), but I also really hate how much it betrayed the horror genre overall by hating its monsters. not even Helsing et. al killing Dracula had as much malice and irresponsibility to the narrative as the picrew-pandering morality circlejerk that was tma s5.

I LOVE THIS. obviously we know gertrude kept the archive in disarray on purpose, but i’m also sure that a good chunk of that was just that like. the archivist has no drive to catalog. the archivist needs to know, not to record or to sort or to label. jonah of course keeps his mementos, his trinkets, his tokens, and talismans. jonah hoards the letters sent to him by long dead paramours. jonah collects objects of power. jonah logs and records and researches. but the archivist just. feeds.

The episode starts. With Elias calling the police like he’s ordering a pizza. He then reads a letter from his dead ex-boyfriend and casually mentions he keeps his bones in his office. (Why. Why would you do this.) Then he says some spooky shit about how Jon Should See People As Disposable, Actually. Jon comes in having the WORST DAY OF HIS FUCKING LIFE. He almost got fucking killed TWICE and then was immediately dragged to help his would-be murderer kill his boss. He tries to use the powers he only recently realized he had on Elias, only for Elias to be weirdly horny about it. Melanie is here. She only MARGINALLY knows what’s happening. Martin has to confront that the police are murderers for the first time. Tim is already going through it. Elias confesses to two murders. He gives basira a job but make it spooky. Then he gives Jon some vague as shit answers and says something along the lines of Being Human Is Overrated before sending him on a wild goose chase around the world to stop the evil mannequins from doing a puppet show. What part of that isn’t hilarious
I love the idea of people reading statements being able to imitate unconsciously the statement giver’s disposition and speech quirks. except when it’s usamerican. Gertrude in MAG 99 is giving me hives.

the joy in jon’s voice whenever he puts a piece of the puzzle together is so endearing. and ofc I <3 whenever he reverently calls sth ‘monstrous’ beautiful
I love the sheer number of statement givers who say sth like they knew they could have run, they knew they should have left things well alone, but they had to look, had to know. this happens so often that making a compilation would be superfluous. and it’s such a fundamental of horror, too – heeding that invitation, crossing that threshold, &c. Elias was so right and sexy for his ‘You sought knowledge relentlessly, and you always chose to see. Our world is made of choices, Jon, and very rarely do we truly know what any of them mean, but we make them nonetheless.’
