MAG 160: The Eye Opens is the perfect final episode for hit podcast The Magnus Archives. Magnus is a slow-paced horror with procedural influences in the vein of The X-Files. The protagonist seeks out records of the supernatural to validate a mysterious experience that marked his childhood. He tries to find an underlying logic behind these events for his own peace of mind and, later, to protect others. So far, so standard.
Some major themes in Magnus are 1. When people are dependent on harmful systems for survival, what is the right response?, 2. The mundane is an equal and opposite force to the supernatural, 3. What is the point of free will without power?, 4. The universe tends towards evil. MAG 160 leans into these themes far better than anything in the final season. The protagonist has a choice between hurting others to survive and drawing on the resources of a harmful institution, he tries to minimize the damage and fails. The ultimate evil is delivered by completely mundane means. All the choices of the past 4 seasons are rendered meaningless. That’s what it’s supposed to be.
