jonathan. he spent his life escaping from spinning knife tortures and immediately tripping and falling into new spinning knife tortures. he was forcibly moisturized for a month. he hated his coworkers. his coworkers were his only friends. the only person he knew who didn’t make a threat or attempt on his life was his ex girlfriend. my dearest chew toy, jonathan. my pile of wet laundry, jonathan. my darling collection of trauma symptoms in sweater vest from the year 1982, jonathan. my most miserable little addict, jonathan. voted “london’s most hated man” every year of his life, including when he lived in bournemouth and was a child, jonathan. most realistic bi ace rep I’ve ever seen.

I really love gertrude robinson bc how often do you get an older woman character who just really sucks? She sacrifices ppl that trust her. She is so focused on keeping the world from ending that she completely doesn’t notice one of her assistants routinely torturing the others. She dismembered a guy. She does her job badly on purpose. She’s cunning and sneaky. She dares her murderous, immortality seeking boss to kill her. She gets murdered by her murderous, immortality seeking boss. She’s not particularly friendly. She somehow had access to plastic explosives. She’s a manipulator and a liar. She’s bound to the avatar of destruction. She helped a guy get rid of a pig by telling him to put it in conk crete. She is like the opposite of a sweet little grandma and that’s beautiful.
I know he’s kind of a polarizing character, but I have to say, Elias Bouchard truly is Iconic. When you hear the twist of “the boring middle manager was actually secretly an evil eldritch monster the whole time!” you sort of assume that the boring middle manager persona was just a facade, but no, he really does seem to just enjoy dull administrative work. He’s both exactly as boring as he seems on the surface and profoundly fucked up in ways you couldn’t imagine. He’s practically omniscient and playing 4-D chess with everyone, but he responds to even slight hiccups in his elaborate scheme with acts of extreme violence. He beats an old man to death with a metal pipe and when someone brings it up later he goes, “Yeah I may have overreacted there.” His employees are constantly trying to murder him. He broke out of prison just so he could give a dramatic monologue. He had a weird gay thing going on with seemingly every man he met in the past 200 years. He loves scheduling.

His weapons of choice are either the supernatural powers granted to him by the unknowable Fear God who he has devoted the last 200 years of his life to serving or. Gun.
It’s honestly so iconic that Gertrude Robinson - a woman who spent her entire life pissing of supernatural entities whose, like, Whole Deal is inflicting pain and killing people, who was despised by at least one death cult (probably several), who averted multiple seeming apocalypses through the power of ingenuity and extreme violence - finally died when her shitty evil boss threatened her with a gun and she told him, “Look, I’m busy, either shoot me or go away.”
Hey besties I know the podcast has been over for like three years but listening to tmagp made me go back and listen to the Magnus Archives again, and now I’m feeling Jmart Emotions. Anyone have any good fic recs? They don’t have to be any particular kind, I can’t tell if I’m in the mood for fluff or angst or what, I mostly just want to hear people’s favorite fics.
This isn’t to throw shade at other people’s theorizing - we’re only 8 episodes into this podcast, a lot could happen, I DEFINITELY don’t think I know everything about what’s going on - but I’m REALLY surprised at how many people think the Celia we see in the Magnus Protocol might not be the same person we saw in the Magnus Archives. Given that:
- she thought the OIAR’s vibe would be more “manila envelopes and tape recorders,” consistent with Archives-verse!Celia having given a statement at the Magnus Institute
- She wondered if she could search for cases related to “being buried alive, or meat,” implying that her frame of reference for these things is very influenced by Smirke’s 14
- She recognized “Chester’s” voice. I’ve seen some people saying that since she knows (a) Georgie, she might just know Jon as her ex-boyfriend, and I’m not going to discount that possibility, but the cagey way she responds when Sam asks her how she recognizes the voice reads to me as a “I’m hiding something” rather than a genuine “I don’t remember”
- She’s looking into alternate dimensions (!!!)
- She goes by “Celia.” We’ve gotten pretty good evidence that people’s names stay the same or at least similar between universes - tma gave us Anya Villete/Annie Willet, and now tmagp has given us Gerry and Gertrude (who we can be pretty sure are from this universe given that their archives-verse selves are dead) - and tma strongly implied that Celia was not originally named Celia, it was just the name she ended up with after her time in the Stranger domain, so her protocol-verse self would likely have an entirely different name
As for whether the Georgie in tmagp is the same as the Georgie in tma, that I’m not so sure about. But personally, I’m feeling pretty confident about Celia
