“Why are you here, Martin of the Blackwood?” Jon asked, and he asked at a rumble, like a lowing thunderclap. “Why are you here, on the eve of the dawn?”

It began with a tug, felt low in Martin’s sternum. A tickling, unconscious thing that made him want to cough, and then quite abruptly made him want to gag. He heaved, hand to chest. He understood now why they called them silver-tongues, for it felt like hooks of silver had snaked down his throat and between his ribs. They did not want to be there and tore themselves free, taking with them an unbidden reply.

“I’m mourning,” Martin said, “I’m mourning the rest of my life, because tomorrow one of the dawn dances will be mine, and someone else, some stranger, will take me.“
