Here’s a thought…what if Martin Kartin Blackwood looked like super fucking scary. What if you go into the institute and you see like a 6"4 huge man bustling around with sparkly nail polish and a pride pin and he’s scowling and then he offers you tea and comforts you after you have your statement and you’re like oh ok I’m not gonna get beaten up by a massive gay man.
A second thought (I know shocking)…an amiable enough looking Jonathan Sims, you look at him and you sort of think yeah I’d tell that guy one of my deepest secrets, he looks kinda decent and then you sit down in the chair opposite and his features sort of sharpen and stand rigid against his face and his eyes narrow dangerously and it happened so quickly that you cant even imagine how you ever thought you could trust him but the words are flowing out and you can’t seem to stop them.
All the people who go Martin is a sweetheart and could do no wrong? What are you seeing that I’m not? Because I think you are doing Martin, his character development, and the struggles he went through dirty. After all come season 5 he hated almost everyone around him except for Jon. He wanted to kill people and enact revenge. Martin, whether he realized it or not, was willing to manipulate Jon as well. Martin is a great character not because he’s relatable or never actually hurt others or is sweet but because he shows how easy it is to fall back into a cycle of abuse if you’re not careful. Because Martin *had* stopped the cycle of abuse. He did not guilt trip or hurt others like his mother did to him but after the traumas of all the seasons before Martin snapped in his own way in season 5. That’s what makes him human. That’s why out of all the other assistant he also dies. Martin represents all the negative feelings one has towards themselves. That’s why his sacrifice is so important at the end of the podcast. Because the new world is supposed to be a better place without these negative feelings.
It’s interesting to watch throughout the podcast as while Martin externalizes his feelings more Jon internalizes them more. It’s part of the reason they are drawn to eachother. TMA is also all about choice and in the end Martin chose Jon. Jon chose the betterment of the world. Basira chose to finally leave Daisy behind. Georgie finally chose to get involved. Melanie chose herself and to let go of her anger. That’s why Basira, Georgie, and Melanie survive out of everyone else. They saw their flaws and tried to change themselves. Now that doesn’t mean I agree with them but they all chose to be better. When did Jon, Martin, or Tim ever do that? (Sasha and Daisy are their own outliers and rabbit holes)
Now don’t get me wrong I still love all these characters. I’ve never related to someone more than I relate to Martin and I absolutely adore Jon and Tim. But a major point in TMA is that there is no good guy. There is only making the best choice with what you know and have at your disposal.

Time Travel Fix-it Fics: the past archive crew is shocked and pleased by how much nicer future!Jon is to them than their current Jon
My belief: the archive crew doesn’t notice future!Jon is nicer to them, because they’re too busy being disconcerted by how he skitters around corners and stares with a million eyes and keeps hissing and muttering about how they need to murder past!Jon before it’s too late. or at least cut out his eyes, come on everyone be reasonable.
