The moment Elias realized it wasn’t a game anymore came in silence. Jon had been pacing in his office, going over some nonsense about statements and rituals.

Elias wasn’t listening.

He was watching the way Jon rubbed his thumb along the edge of his sleeve when he was thinking. The way his mouth twitched when something didn’t make sense.

Human things. Soft, inconsequential, and devastating.

“You’re not even paying attention,” Jon muttered, half annoyed.

“No,” Elias admitted.
