This isn’t anything major, just me re-listening to scene and realising stuff in hindsight.

On first listen, Elias’ reaction is solely stemming from his frustration with Martin and the burning of the statements. I imagine it wouldn’t have felt good, being as is it directly goes against all he, as an avatar of the Eye, stands for — destruction of knowledge and all that.

But, on second listen, his reaction is far more personal. Martin has unknowingly hit a bullseye with that statement, being as it was a letter to Jonah, and we have evidence of him being the sentimental sort, as with Barnabas’ bones. The little ‘oh’ is hard to hear, but it is there, and it’s definitely his reaction to the statement. The deep breath he takes after could, again, be frustration, but it could also be interpreted as him composing himself, preventing anything else from slipping through the cracks.

On the topic of bone-keeping

Okay, so you all remember this?

What if I told you that something like that happened in real life?

I don’t know how much you guys know about German poetry, but the names Goethe and Schiller might ring a bell.

Anyway, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller were best friends for a really long time with Goethe having been the older one. Schiller got sick with pretty much everything at some point, however, and died, leaving Goethe devastated.

So what did Goethe do? Keep Schiller’s skull in his office. You know, like friends do… On a blue velvet cushion because why not (He even wrote a poem in 1826 called Bei Betrachtung von Schiller’s Schädel [While looking at Schiller’s skull] like any totally normal person would)

The funny part is that until this day no one knows where the original skull is because it got lost at some point.

But I can’t stop thinking about the implications of keeping someone’s bones near you. There’s absolutely no way you do this when you don’t love someone. Like, you’re literally keeping a very visual reminder of that person. Of their death especially. It almost seems desperate. Grief, loss, and love entwined for eternity. It’s a constant memento mori and that’s what makes it so tragic. With pictures you’re reminded of who a person was but with this there’s nothing but the need for acceptance that they’re gone for good. There’s no lying to yourself.

You loved and you lost and you have to live with that.

I really dislike the whole “Elias is a capitalist” thing because it equates fear to capital when it’s not really accurate. and it doesn’t really make sense when it comes to Jon. is he a capitalist too? even more since his whole thing is collecting statements/fear. but a pettier reason is that we do have avatars who are also capitalists. Peter Lukas is right there! he sacrifices his employees, he was even a landlord at some point!

ESPECIALLY because it is kinda impossible for him to do what he does and continue to meaningfully accumulate capital. archiving and storage space is expensive!!! and because the Institute is not considered reputable they likely do not have much in grants and funding but they are still able to continue to take in not only documented statements of everyone who walks in the door and wishes to make one but also large artifacts, and then continues to have money in order to do research on those artifacts and on validating statements! while they do likely have some grant funding or investor funding, in all likelihood a ton of this comes out of jonah’s pocket! like please yall im begging you to realize that while both academia and archiving are important neither of them are cheap within our current systems

Genuinely wish jonah was the most common name to refer to jonah in the fandom

I also can’t stop thinking about Jonah Magnus. Jonah brainrot is real. Help me

I’m afraid I am the worst person to help in this matter my dear moot (especially now oh god) so I can only make this worse

I’m always available to yap about him though! I’ve been dying to make some proper posts about him and I will as soon as I’m finished with my stupid thesis
