i think the reason i’m not fond of jmart is that in a story full of monsters, interesting and complex relationships, and deities crafted by humanity’s own terror, having the main relationship be 10% miscommunication, and 90% fundamental misunderstanding of who each other is as a person, feels a little bit like a letdown. like you’ve got this really grim and dramatic story, and a huge metaplot involving the end of the world and a moral dilemma, and then the main ship we’re supposed to root for is just two people with a need for companionship who despite working together for years, don’t even know each other, never bothered to try getting to know each other because just going off the ideas they have of each other in their heads is easier, and they arguably don’t even really like each other.
