The mischaracterization in TMA fandom is so bad that every time I stumble upon almost any piece of fanart I momentarily feel like I was forced to swallow a lemon whole. I can't look at it for too long matter how pretty it is
I doubt it's a universal experience, but. I sometimes feel like I listened to a different version of the podcast because so much fan content is just inaccurate. "He would not fucking say that" typa deal.
I get that people are allowed to have different interpretations, but after hundreds of headcanons piled onto a character they stop being the same person and become an oc. In this case, it's a collectively dreamt up version of the canon gay couple because of course they need to fit in a fanfiction trope. Canon be damned! Those are my gay blorbos, one is kiki and the other is bouba. That's it that's all you need to know about them in order to participate in fandom

I, for one, do like looking at the (s5) fanart, if it happens to pop across my dash, but it’s very much in a non-fandom context; I view it more as just art, or oc’s, rather than the actual canon characters because honestly? It’s just not them. obviously this applies moreso to martin than it does to jon because he’s more mischaracterized and idealized by the fandom, but yeah, if I tried to think of it in a fandom context I’d probably be actually sick to my stomach because then I have to deal with the fact that these people are completely ignoring the downright abusive qualities of a canon ship so they can have their “apocalypse boyfriends” trope. I 100% get you on that
esp. the “He would not fucking say that” because I get shit like martin being caring and supportive and sympathetic during the eyepocalypse and I just??? what?? where and when did this happen? please I’m begging you engaged with the source material, accept the grim reality of this complex and codependent ship instead of trying to glorify it and make it all cute and upbeat IT’S NOT s5 is so depressing and that INCLUDES their relationship 🙏🙏
