to your knowledge, the cossacks were partly warriors partly ordinary citizens who created their own state of the Zaporizhian Host (modern Ukraine) and defended these lands from the russians, poles, tatars etc. in the summer they gathered in places called the Sich and lived there, serving, solving military and political issues, defending themselves and attacking if necessary.
