hi so ive always been SO curious as to how you go around picking colors for your art? esp when it comes to clothes, fabric etc like you somehow just get such a very feeling with your color choices and i just adore it

typically, I cheat! I usually have an idea in mind of what I want the color scheme to be, or at least what feeling I want the colors to give the piece, and then I will find a photo that comes close to what I have in mind. a lot of the time, I’ll color pick from paintings by leyendecker, sargent, etc, but I’ll also use photos of skyscapes, bugs, plants, etc to nail down a color scheme and try to keep it consistent in my piece.

as for the process of coloring itself, the best tactic I have for making a surface look dynamic is to add hues — so, if I’m painting pink-colored skin, I’ll also mix in some greens and blues in the highlights or purples in the shadows to give it depth, and this applies to literally everything else! I hope this helps!

sure!! I have a video up on tiktok of one of my statue study processes that goes over it a little, and a lot of the time it’s just me throwing down lines until something makes sense haha, but I’ll try to pull something more cohesive together soon!

aw, thank you so much, that’s so sweet!! and my favorite thing to draw is faces, especially in profile — it’s my go-to thing to sketch and the subject I always come back to, which definitely shows in my art haha!! it’s also one of the reasons I love to draw kisses so much 😳🥰💕

have you read any good books lately?

I’ve had,,, a really slow reading year, following several slow reading years during and post-college oops!! but I’m trying to get back into reading for pleasure, and have stocked up on lots of new books. I’m currently in the middle of “dark archives” which is nonfiction about the history of books bound in human skin; super interesting subject matter and very readable as far as nonfiction goes!! I tend to read mostly nonfiction, but again, hoping to switch that up soon!!

HEY HEY thanks so much for asking about my boy!! he is actually a human, but unfortunately his class is still a secret from my party so I’ll have to keep that under wraps for now 👀‼️ what I can tell you is this:

- he doesn’t really have any memories of his past

- he first started seeing magic after encountering fellow party members autry and sunless at the shop where he works (after rolling the campaign’s first nat 20 babey!!), and immediately fainted when seeing their true forms for the first time.

- the night after meeting the party, he had the first dream he can ever remember having, where he was on a battlefield holding a sword and overwhelmed by a feeling of loss and grief

- he is in possession of an ancient enchanted relic that, after bringing it to sunless to be identified, they discovered transforms into a sword. he of course dropped this sword on the ground immediately lol.

- he didn’t own a phone of his own (in his words, he didn’t have anyone to talk to), but party member aidyn gave him a nokia. he still hasn’t sent anything to the party’s groupchat yet, though.

I’ll be sure to give more updates on his adventures and lore (and relationships) as they come up!! session 4 is this weekend and I’m absolutely vibrating from excitement hhhhhh

not yet!! but one of my party members did a redraw of him as the “that’s rough buddy” screenshot from atla, and I have lots of other meme redraws planned for him soon lol!!

I saw on twitter that you are looking for projects, are there any that you're doing now that we'll get to see soon?

Yes!! In the short term, I have a few print wips I’ll be sitting down to finish. Farther out, I’m getting ready to start a tarot series based on… something secret… So I’m definitely excited for that!!

Hello! Do you have any speedpaints or progress pics?? I'm just so enamored with your art especially your colors and shading, would love seeing how you do it!

I typically posted my wips on twitter or my instagram stories, and saved this tumblr for my finished pieces, but you can also see some of my progress on tiktok! I don’t think my process is suited for speedpaints, sadly, but I can definitely try to get more process posts out since people seem interested in that!!

do you have any tips for transitioning from digital painting to traditional painting?

I actually did the reverse haha!! I started out doing inks and watercolors, and only started digital art in college. And then I got into acrylics, and now I’m learning oils!

I think overall, my biggest challenge is that I struggle learning shortcuts in digital art that could speed up my process or make it significantly easier; I should sit down to learn these, because there are so many cool effects out there that I’d love to use in my art without struggling to do it “manually”.

The flip side of that is that I use a lot of traditional art techniques in my digital art that people have noticed and appreciated: glazing layers of “paint” with transparent brushes to create color depth, crosshatching with pencil brushes to shade, focusing on creating texture, etc.

But my personal biggest tips for both digital and medium art are: don’t get too focused on the details, zoom out and focus on overall cohesion; negative space is your friend, use it to carve out the focus of your composition; study your shapes, balance your organic and geometric elements to create compositional interest.

But yeah basically, everything you do to make art feeds into all the other ways you make art!!
