ALTJonathan Sims - Season 1 aloof
Bwahaha, he turned out looking so old. And so respectable. And weirdly kind of innocent. Look at all that unblemished skin!
——–
[image description: drawing of Jonathan Sims from season one: He is a thin man with a long, lined face, strong eyebrows a long pointy nose and light brown skin. His short black hair is parted on the side and peppered with grey strands. He wears rectangular glasses, a checkered dress shirt under an olive-green pullover. He gazes directly at the viewer giving a critical look and the way his mouth is drawn gives the impression of inherent disapproval.]
ALTMartin Blackwood – season 1 overlooked
this one was more difficult to paint than I expected… so I am looking forward to sculpting more chubby cheeks with colours.
———–
[image description: Martin is broadly built, blond guy with a very round face and nose, a small mounth and round glasses. He looks up with grey eyes, and holds a paper folder in his one hand and a bigger cardboard folder in the other. He wears a pastel green-blue sweatshirt decorated with a few thin blue lines at chest height.]
ALTJonathan Sims – season 2 paranoid
It was a rather steep decent from his orderly appearance in season one 😅
———-
[image description: Jon slouches in his shirtsleeves at a desk, the sleeves rolled up. one arm hooked behind the back of a chair. His hair gotten a bit longer and looks very unkempt. He has an intense expression on his face, teeth clenched, eyes glancing to the side, while he talks into a purple tape recorder in his hand. He is lit from the right by the yellow light of what could be a desk lamp. His lower arm, hand and his cheeks are dappled with small round scars.]

Martin Blackwood – season 2 caring
Yes, I would love to have some tea with you, Martin.
————
[image description: Martin has a stocky body, round facial features and short blond hair. He holds two steaming mugs in his hand. A teal coloured one has the string and paper of a teabag hanging from it. The other one has the words “Be mad. It helps” printed on it. Martin wears a light blue dress shirt under a loose grey hoody jacket, wears grey-violet glasses and smiles a bit apologetically while looking to the right with grey eyes.]
ALTJonathan Sims – season 3 hunted and abducted
Jon at his most casual.
———
[image description: We see Jon in profile as he is leaning forward, elbows on a metal railing, holding a hand-rolled cigarette in his right hand and blowing smoke from his mouth. He wears a muddy green t-shirt. His dark brown hair is almost at shoulder lenth and has many grey strands. His left hand is bandaged up to its wrist and there is the hint of a big, white bandaid on the front of his neck. his arm and his face dappeled with many small round scars.]

Martin Blackwood – season 3 stepping in
Well, someone has to take and read statements, while their boss is off getting kidnapped…
——————-
[image description: Martin, a big, stout guy with blond hair and round glasses, sits at a desk his hands lying on some sheets of paper and a dark yellow folder, probably containing a statement. He stares down at the paper with puffy, reddened eyes and reads. A tape recorder is propped up in front of him on the desk. He wears a light grey hoody and is lit from the front and slightly from below – likely by something like a desk lamp. The background around him is of a shadowy, purplelish brown.]

Jonathan Sims – season 4 becoming
ugh, I feel like I fiddled around for too long on this one… But it is fun to hold it up next to his season 1 appearance.
also there is a darker version. Jon, I think you are glowing a little…

—————-
[image description: Jon head, shoulders and chest. He is wearing an outdoor Barbour jacket, a white / beige, green and blue chechered button shirt peaking out from a green woolen pullover. He has long hair with grey streaks, the upper part of it gathered at the back of his head. His eyes looking straight at the viewer behind square rimless glasses have a faint green glow inside their pupil. There are small scars all over his face and a faint horizontal one crossing his throat. He looks very tired, serious, melancholic and kind of done with it all.
The second image is the same just with a dark grey shadow layered over it, small purple rim lights showing up at the side of his head and his glasses. The tiny green lights in his pupils are a bit more pronounced here. There is a close-up of his face from the dark version.]

Martin Blackwood – season 4 lonely
I feel like Corruption and the Lonely get a lot of treats with the pandemic going on. As someone who thrives on independence and just doing my own thing, and becomes a bit of a hermit when recuperating, retreating into one’s own space is not really a help, when being alone too much becomes the actual problem. So one of the lesson from the last two years, was to be more aware of my social needs and be more proactive about when to reach out for my friends and family. Or just make sure I plan in enough social meet-ups into my weekly schedule.
The Lonely is definitely one of the powers I felt at times quite vulnerable towards. So I really feel for Martin here. Make sure to not get lost in the fog.
——————————-
[ID: Martin is a broad guy with a round face and light, blond hair wearing a white / light grey hoody and is standing in front of a grey blue background in a very pale light. Whisps of fog are floating past him as he directly stares at the viewer with empty grey, pallid, grey eyes through his glasses. He looks disconsolate in a passiv, silent way. There are dark shadows around his eyes.]

Jonathan Sims – season 5 avatar
decided to leave this one in a more rough stage… is it exactly how I want it to be? Don’t know. Maybe I’ll try again another time. For now, it will suffice.
————–
[image description: Jon’s head and body is surrounded by a green tinged darkness, with a dim light coming from above. His long grey streaked hair is floating around his head. His unnaturally green glowing eyes looking down at you. A similar glow comes out of his opened mouth. His face and upper chest are covered in likewise green glowing eyes, as are several lurking between his floating hairstrands. Their glowing pupils are all centered at the viewer.]

Martin Blackwood – season 5 his reason
Ah, hell, let’s finish that series off. Properly. With boyfriends.
(I do have some ideas for the other avatars, and few extras, but for now, let’s call it a day) :)
——————
[image description: It’s Jon and Martin standing next to each other looking slightly upwards. Their holding hands. Jon’s black hair and beard is more greyed than ever, his brown skin marked by small round scars on his neck cheeks, forehead (one prominent one at the left side of his upper lip) and a thin long one across his throat. He looks tired and melancholic but composed. His pupils are little points of green lights. He wears his dark brown, rumply jacket and the green pullover and checkered shirt from his first season portrait, both look much more tattered and distinctly less pristine. Martin also wears the green blue sweater from his season one portrait under a grey windstopper jacket that is designed with the upper part around the shoulder and collar in a darker colour. He has a backpack on his bag. His blond hair is tousled and there are the beginnings of a blond beard around his chin and jawline. His expression is determined and resolute.]

upon the stairs
I recently listened again to episode 85 while walking home in the evening and it is still among my favorites. The lyrical quality of the poem it is based upon echoes on through the statement and so the episode has it all, heartbreaking, existential dread, confusion and melancholy, a dreamlike atmosphere and then some extremely charming, friendly banter between Jon and Georgie which reveals so very well, that under all his cynical standoffishness of season one and obsessed paranoia from season two, Jon actually is genuinely a sweet and funny guy.

—————————-
[image description:
The first image is a digital, black and white chalk-charcoal drawing on light grey background. The drawing is contained in an oval shape. It shows a hallway with a staircase. A man is standing on the lower steps of the staircase and stares up at a white shape of a human figure that appears on the steps above him. The scene is dimly lit by a lightsource coming from the front and the right, lighting up the man at the bottom of the staircase from behind and casting is shadow upon the steps. The stairs dissolve into dark shadows further up, the steps and the banister slowly twisting in to a spiral curve towards the lift side of the image, implying a shift of perspective.
The second image is a colored sketch of Jon and Georgie. Jon sits at a table, statement folder, tape recorder and a tea mug in front of him. He scratches the Admiral’s chin who made himself comfortable on Jon’s lap. Jon’s face is in profile widely smiling at Georgie who stands next to him, ready to leave for a date wearing a light coat and her purse slung over her left shoulder. She gives him a teasing look and smiles back at him. ]

Basira Hussain
I was thinking about why I ended up with deciding against drawing my Basira with a hijab. Maybe because I saw her as principled but not necessarily devout? But then there are many good reasons for women to choose to wear a hijab (and not just religious ones), so I wanted try out a range of designs for her. No matter how she looks, Basira will always be one of my favorites.
——————
[image description: the image shows three different character vignettes of Basira.
The one to the left shows her as a dark-skinned woman with a slightly heavier built and features. Her hair is braided in cornrows to the back of her head and then collected in a bun. She is wearing a hoodie in an burnt orange colour and is sitting, reading a book in her hands. Light falls over her left shoulder from behind.
The middle portrait shows her as a young woman of middle-eastern decent, wearing a bulky police jacket and a dark blue hijab.
The version of her to the right is dark-skinned again in civilian clothes, but also wearing a headscarf. This one is a light grey. She is sitting at a desk reading a statement before her, her head leaning on her left hand and arm.]

Lights Out / Sandmann
I came across episode 98 again. It strikes a chord with me, mostly because E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Der Sandmann is one of my favorite books that I had to read for school. The language is great and it is as creepy as it is hilariously over the top. I illustrated one of the scenes back in school and did it and some more again during my Bachelor years. It was such fun.

Also some Maxwell Rayner here: One has I imagined him from Basira’s statement and one for how he is described in the statement from episode 89.

[image descriptions:
1) The image is a digital charcoal drawing. In an long, oval shape it depicts a tall figure, with lengthened features looming over two people, a man and a woman lying in a bed. A stream of blackness is gushing out of the figures mouth. In what might be his hands it his holding the edge of a black shape, which melts with the surrounding darkness. The man is propped up on his arms, staring up at the figure, while his wife sleeps peacefully next to him.
2) It is a digital painting in light blues, greys and dirty yellows, showing a creature with a humanoid body and a bird’s head feeding its sharp-beaked bird brood an eyeball. The creature is dressed in a long 17th century frock-coat and wears a wig on its head. In one hand it holds a small string bag. In the background clouds are shifting in front of a moon.
3) This portrait of Rayner shows him as a black middle-aged man, with a collar that hints hat victorian times. His hair is streaked with grey, his eyes are completely white. He too is lit from the front, black shadowy tendrils are staring to envelope him from below.
4) The head of the People’s Church of the Divine Host is depicted as a white old, thin man, wearing a dusty, black robe and being surrounded by darkness in shadow and dark specs hanging in the air. He is lit from the front and slightly from below, the light shining on his white, cloud-like hair and beard, his milky white eyes and a stream of blackness flowing out of his open mouth.]

Agnes Montague and Jude Perry
They will burn you and everything you love.
—————————————-
[image description:
Agnes Montague is a young, caucasian woman with long, straight, dark auburn hair, parted on the side and fastend with a yellow hair clip. She wears a loose beige coat and a light yellow tunic with a deep neck line. She glances wearily to the side, the light yellow highlight on her skin giving the impression of sweat and the tinge of something unhealthy. She is standing in front of an intense orange background. It’s glow embracing Agnes from both sides and reflects in her eyes.
Jude Perry as a stoutly built east asian woman. She has an undercut with a very short fringe, wears some kind of leather jacket with a white shirt underneath. On her left side on her neckline bits of a tattoo are showing. It doesn’t exactly shows what it depicts, but it could be flames and smoke creeping upwards to the side of her neck. She has an menacing grin on her face and is surrounded by bright orange flames for a background. Her pupils shine with the same light in her shadowed eyes.]
