So like. Is anyone gonna explain why Jon gets criticized for acting like everything is on him to fix or deal with on his own and feeling like he can’t accept or trust anyones help… yet Georgie is praised and acknowledged as being in the right for “”setting boundaries“” by completely cutting him out of her life? Or how about how Jon gets criticized for being rude and off putting towards people he seemingly has no reason to… yet Melanie gets understanding and acceptance for holding a grudge and hatred towards Jon from the moment they met.
Cause I’m waiting.
No but I need to talk about Sam Winchester and Jon Sims and how they are the exact same niche character created specifically to drive me insane.
Here you have two characters destined from young ages (very VERY young in Sam’s case) to end the world. Hand picked by forces beyond their control. Molded into what they were to become through coercion and ignorance. Here you have two characters trying to figure out why these significant deaths in their lives happened, leading them onto that path. Stealing the comfort of normalcy from them and alienating them from humanity. Here you have these two characters coming to terms with inhuman abilities they desperately want to use for good. Even when the cost of these abilities becomes something monstrous. Even when it becomes clear no one around them sees them as the same person anymore. Here you have these two characters who go to their deaths having lost every ounce of agency of their lives.
And they weren’t supposed to be sympathetic.
Both of their corruption arcs were supposed to be cut and dry. Sam was supposed to be fully lost to his demon blood. Jon was supposed to gladly take the throne and be consumed by power.
Neither of their needs to prevent the pain and suffering through the apocalypses they caused (or would’ve in Sam’s case) meant anything in the face of what they were chosen to become. Vessels. Catalysts for torment. Anti-Christs who people hated and feared. And that is what drives me insane. That these two characters, within their stories, who had trauma after trauma thrown at them, were made to be vilified and seen as weak willed freaks of nature.
I don’t know what the point of this is. Maybe there isn’t one. Maybe it’s 1am and I’m just sad. Maybe it’s 1am and I’m just angry. I don’t know. What I do know though is that Sam Winchester and Jon Sims deserved better and I will fist fight Eric Kripke and Johnny Sims in the parking lot of a Dennys.

Jon s3 ep 1: there were some people who suffered worse and were less deserving than me.
Like Jon you were 8 you did not deserve that
every decision jon makes in the entire show can be traced back to this too. he was traumatized, invalidated, and made to feel unwanted for basically his entire childhood.
why was he willing to trade his own pain and wellbeing for a scrap of information from jude that wasn’t even guaranteed to help?
why would he go to certain death in the coffin for a woman who tried to kill him?
why was he willing to go with michael?
well you see, he thinks he should have died at age 8, and has been trying to make up for that original sin of surviving since then.

The bullet in Melanie’s leg was seen as a good thing. That gave her strength to defend them. Sure, Basira immediately agreed to get it out, but she sure as fuck also regretted it, and Melanie definitely wasn’t seen by Georgie as culpable for her act in wanting it to stay there.
Martin so quickly accepted the lonely that it didn’t take long for him to be able to use it for his disappearing acts. Yet no one at all ever called HIM an avatar or a monster for passively embracing the same kind of entity Jon did, nor did they confront him about it.
Daisy, as a near lifelong Hunter, was the only one of the three that had any real idea of what Jon was going through, who actually wanted to change and not be who she was. Even if it was way too little too late.
And the thing of it is. This isn’t addressed in the podcast. At no point is this disconnect discussed. Martin is SHOCKED, SHOCKED I SAY, at the fact he has a domain in the apocalypse… on top of him egging on Jon to smite people. Melanie barely has the wherewithal to say that Jon probably wouldn’t have caused the apocalypse on purpose. Probably.
This doesn’t bode well for y’all’s narrative that the point of TMA was to show how power corrupts or what the fuck ever y’all wanna say it was about.
Because they had that power. They used that power. And Melanie gouging her eyes out after having her connection to the Slaughter severed and Martin never outright being said to have fed the Lonely shouldn’t absolve them of that. Yet they were. Melanie was outside of the dichotomy of Watcher and Watched and at peace even with all the suffering around her. Martin’s push to kill every active avatar was only seen as bad when we’re told JON enjoyed and actively wanted to continue it.
Their choice to follow the Web’s scheme, the scheme that MADE JON INTO WHAT HE WAS, THAT WAS HIS SOLE PURPOSE FOR EXISTING AFTER IT CHOSE HIM, was the good and righteous choice. We hear that with the reconstruction and birdsong in the background of the very end scene. We hear that with Martin railing against and questioning if Jon was even human enough to know his own choices.
If the story wanted to sell me that Jon had no right to have a happy life because he made evil choices. That he was just as bad as Jonah in wanting to survive. Then the story shouldn’t have made me care that at every chance he was broken. It shouldn’t have made him sympathetic. If power is evil then I shouldn’t have cared that he died the villain.
