I think another sticking point about my perspective of avatars dying if they refuse to feed their patron, is that I am wholly convinced that Evan Lukas was a fledgling avatar of the Lonely. But he fell in love with Naomi Herne and he decided to shun his “family’s religion” and then died for it. In a way that didn’t cement his full fledged status as an avatar, unlike the others. Which only made him dissolve INTO the Lonely, giving him a chance to save her from it posthumously.

So yeah. I absolutely believe that both rejecting AND embracing the antithesis of the fear you’re being subjected by would only lead to total death instead of ascending to full avatar status. Or something like that.

But that’s just, like, my opinion, man.
