I get annoyed by the fact that people will say about JMart that it was them ~choosing~ each other despite not being ~fated~ to be together and blah blah blah.

I get that this interpretation is how we’re supposed to view Martin’s ‘but we wouldn’t have’. I get that it was supposed to be him saying to Jon that he was fighting to be with him in spite of everything against them (each other included). And in a story about decisions, I can see how this would be meaningful and ‘sweet… sort of’. Choosing to love someone in a world controlled by fear? Yeah. Sure. Powerful.

But that wasn’t the conversation Jon was having.

Jon wasn’t fantasizing about some great love that transcends dimensions. Jon was imagining a life where they could exist without fear. A life where they still chose each other despite normal circumstances. Where they could get to have actual normal relationship growing pains not colored by their pasts.

Martin is talking about compatibility and the past when Jon is talking about living and the future.

Neither of them have had what could be considered unconditional love. But where Martin cannot conceptualize it nor give it in turn, Jon does. Jon can wish for a world not defined by his past while Martin can only create one that is.

This is all wrapped up in their traumas and is WHY they’re actually incompatible.
