A very popular thing that I despise is the certainty of some fans that in season 1 jon was cold and unempathetic, and that he treated the people who came to give their statement heartlessly and cruelly.

And that’s just not true??? He tried to provide them with whatever comfort he could in his position as an archivist, which amounted to him giving them space and cautiously offering to refer them to a specialist. He was meant to record, research and categorize their stories into little boxes. What was he supposed to do, say “of course I believe that you found yourself in an endless foggy field and the only thing that brought you back to reality was your dead husband’s voice” like that’s anything other than logically impossible???

He wasn’t a therapist. His job wasn’t to try and make these freaked out people feel better. His job was to literally pick apart, sort and categorize their experiences into little boxes, which he dutifully did. He was actually quite a decent archivist, with enough curiosity to research the statements carefully, and enough cautiousness to not get killed in the process. That’s why he was doomed

Can I BLEASE get a supercut of JUST the statements? Even the season five ones! I want to listen to Cul-De-Sac and Love Bombing and all the other season four ones without feeling like I’m being psychically attacked anytime the metaplot comes in.

Working on something…..

Remind me to talk about how every person Jon interacted with lead to him being marked.

Hey, I'm someone with actual Learned Helplessness (and it's a thing I have talked about in therapy). And I love projecting that onto Jon. Please continue. You're doing great.

martinblackwoodhaterfan:

Okay 💗 yay 💗 (I’m gonna be honest when I saw the beginning of that ask I thought you were gonna tell me to kms so this is a pleasant surprise)

Anyway, since this is not something I myself have experience with, and the information about it that I do have is very limited, then I might as well be wrong. But here is how I see it:

Every single time Jon tried to do something with good intentions, it either didn’t change anything at all or made things worse. Trying to get rid of NotSasha resulted in freeing a dangerous entity from its imprisonment, got him falsely accused of Leinter’s murder, and cost him his job and apartment. The first statement giver whose story he directly acknowledged as true, Helen Richardson, didn’t even get to leave the Institute’s building before getting “eaten” by the same door that had been haunting her. He tried his hardest to stop the Unknowing only to find out it would’ve collapsed on its own, and that Tim sacrificed himself for nothing. There are probably more examples but I can’t really recall any more rn

Anyway, after trying his best to change anything then repeatedly failing, plus (in the later seasons) being hated by literally everyone he knew, I imagine Jon developed a belief that nothing he could do would ever change anything, and so he stopped trying entirely. I don’t really remember any of the s4 metaplot but I think this best applies to the Jon from that period.

Of course later he found out that every singe action he had taken was influenced in some way by his boss or some cosmic being and that none of his choices were truly his own and that trying to fix things caused him to be the main sacrifice in a world-ending ritual. (There was also something in s5 about Martin insisting that they help the people trapped in domains and Jon refusing because it’s impossible/it wouldn’t change anything but he was implied to Know™️ that through the Eye so I dunno)

This is probably all wrong but I don’t feel like digging through the transcripts right now so just take it

hi quick question why is Jon being billow by most of the women in tma seen as a meme? I’m sorry but I can’t seem to fathom how a traumatised person who sees themself as being a horrible monster being reaffirmed that everyone in their life does think the same is funny?? Like it’s not as if he was in control of the situation or their circumstances, they just needed someone to blame! Martin too!

I stand with my boy Jon >:(

manueladominguezliker:

Remind me to talk about how every person Jon interacted with lead to him being marked.

OKAY. So. To start. Let’s point out that these marks are mostly caused by, ostensibly, people who could be considered his ‘friends’. A debatable word, but. Here we are.

Tim literally got him killed in his suicide, so: The End. I will blame him for this because he literally didn’t care that he was going to kill not only the Circus/Nikola and himself, but Jon and Basira and Daisy. But whatever. He’s dead. Moving on.

If Sasha hadn’t talked to the Distortion then Jon wouldn’t have been marked by The Spiral and in her death he was first touched by The Stranger. I suppose I can’t REALLY blame her for them, as who knows if the Distortion would’ve left the Archives alone and there was still the matter of the Unknowing later. But whatever. She’s dead. Moving on.

Martin also caused two marks! The Corruption cause he was trying to prove a point (yeah, I said it, it wasn’t cause of no 'due diligence’, bite me) and then The Lonely. Which. Duh. Similarly in this case, who knows if Jane Prentiss would’ve left the Archives alone. HOWEVER. As I’ve said before. Jon should’ve left his ass in the Lonely. But whatever. He’s dead. Moving on.

Basira lead him to The Dark! She was guided there by fucking Elias and we know that they didn’t have to fucking deal with it! Like! Even before knowing that no other ritual would’ve worked! Manuela said as much! And the People’s Church of the Divine Host were all but dead after that raid that killed Maxwell Rayner. But whatever.

Daisy and The Hunt and Melanie and The Slaughter don’t need much discussion. One did it cause she could and one did it cause of self-defense. One is dead and one is alive. One can be blamed and one cannot. I won’t debate this. But I am still going to point out that these are people he had no qualms against – in Daisy’s case cause he had barely met her before going on the lam, and in Melanie’s case there was some contention but nothing worse than clashing personalities. But whatever.

As I said, we can view Jude Perry’s marking him with The Desolation and Mike Crew’s marking him with The Vast as his 'fault’. He didn’t have to talk to Jude who had him talk to Mike. The only reason, though, that he did, was because he was being dangled a carrot that told him he could prevent untold tragedy. But it was still his choice, as it stands. But whatever. They’re dead. Moving on.

I suppose we could also 'blame’ him for Jared Hopsworth marking him for The Flesh and for going into The Buried, which are connected. He didn’t HAVE to get an anchor or go into the coffin to get Daisy. The only reason he did was because, at that point, everyone already hated him and bringing Daisy back might’ve made Basira hate him a little less. That and the possibility of suicide by cop. But whatever. They’re dead. Moving on.

Could you blame a child for being marked by The Web because he read a book? Could you blame an adult for being marked by The Eye for wanting answers about that experience? The show certainly does. But whatever. He’s dead. None of this matters.

What I’m saying, I suppose, is that there is only one* person Jon considered a friend who did not, in some way, contribute to his suffering. And that’s cause Gerry was already dead.

Moving on.

Honestly. In vomiting that out. I realize I really should refresh myself of seasons 3-5. 1&2 I’ve got down pretty well pat, but… ehhh… I like to revisit those statements.

Anyway. I have bound/printed copies of seasons 1-4. I’ll likely just read seasons 3&4. Cause of the fuckass ads clogging everything up when I try to binge.

Season five will be for whenever I hit rock bottom.

Again.

jjkyaoi:

insane to me that the bad things jon has done are ALMOST completely outweighed by the bad things that the other characters blame him for. and he’s not even mad about it most of the time. somebody in the archives could stub their toe and be like fucking JON and he’d hear it and be like yeah….

I get annoyed by the fact that people will say about JMart that it was them ~choosing~ each other despite not being ~fated~ to be together and blah blah blah.

I get that this interpretation is how we’re supposed to view Martin’s ‘but we wouldn’t have’. I get that it was supposed to be him saying to Jon that he was fighting to be with him in spite of everything against them (each other included). And in a story about decisions, I can see how this would be meaningful and ‘sweet… sort of’. Choosing to love someone in a world controlled by fear? Yeah. Sure. Powerful.

But that wasn’t the conversation Jon was having.

Jon wasn’t fantasizing about some great love that transcends dimensions. Jon was imagining a life where they could exist without fear. A life where they still chose each other despite normal circumstances. Where they could get to have actual normal relationship growing pains not colored by their pasts.

Martin is talking about compatibility and the past when Jon is talking about living and the future.

Neither of them have had what could be considered unconditional love. But where Martin cannot conceptualize it nor give it in turn, Jon does. Jon can wish for a world not defined by his past while Martin can only create one that is.

This is all wrapped up in their traumas and is WHY they’re actually incompatible.

I can’t stop thinking about this scene. I can’t stop thinking about how this is legitimately just Martin pointing out that if Jon had just stayed dead or killed himself that the archival crew would’ve been free and safe and therefore the world would’ve been free and safe cause he wouldn’t have been able to be used to enact the ritual. I can’t stop thinking about how this is legitimately just Martin asking Jon if he would’ve stayed dead or killed himself had he known about the fact of the matter and in questioning him doubted his commitment to DYING for the greater good.

Martin flat out told Jon to his face that the world would’ve been better off without him and Jon didn’t disagree. And then Martin has the gall to be shocked when Jon decides to kill everyone and everything just for the notion that no one would be in the situation he had been in that resulted in the rituals success.

levaagrace:

“Jon has no empathy for statement givers in season 1.”

So anyways. Jon did not inform Laura Popham that the majority of her recollection of the events of her sister’s death in Lost Johns Cave were verifiably false on several accounts with full evidence to back it up.

Sit on that and spin.

levaagrace:

At my most uncharitable, I wouldn’t be surprised if Martin’s whole ‘appear unassuming and bumbling in order to manipulate the people around him into doing what he wants’ extended to the supposed feelings he had for Jon and that in fact a huge part of JMart being together was because Martin saw Jon as a means to an ends (I.e., his very survival) and that everything he said to him during the apocalypse and whatever we didn’t see during their time in the safe house was calculated and when they were finally free of the horrors that Martin would’ve skipped out of town.

Putting my tags here verbatim as I reblog cause yeah.

levaagrace:

So, like, is anyone gonna comment on the fact that Jon’s whole “I don’t want to be another goddamn mystery” thing might have actually had to do with the fact that the person that he saw die in front of him when he was eight died without anyone knowing what actually happened to him or believing that that’s what actually happened to him?

Idk! Just trauma things!

I’m gonna list my fanfic ideas and y’all tell me which sounds the most interesting to read okay?

Prefacing this by saying that any post!canon ones will be set in a canon!divergence au where they don’t get sent elsewhere, unless stated otherwise, and none of the post!canon facts we got from Protocol are true.

REWIND AND OVERWRITE

Amnesia!fic. Mulling over what Annabelle Cane said about how Jon would be when they sent the Fears away. Essentially, after it all was said and done, Jon wakes from a brief catatonic state with no memories prior to his first day as the head archivist. Explores how he would react to learning about everything he did and was done to him. Still kinda conceptual. Multi-chaptered.

SCREAM, SCREAM, SCREAM

The Great Therapy Fic! Jon goes to therapy to deal with everything. Tackles fear mark by fear mark. Basically forcing him to confront and deal with his emotions and everything that happened through and before the series. Still working this out as well. Multi-chaptered.

HAND IN UNLOVABLE HAND

Season four canon!divergence. Jon is ready to end it all. Daisy stops him and convinces him that maybe they could both starve their patrons out. Jon mostly just wants to die though but agrees. A suicide pact and a road trip to the safe house ensues. I don’t know why I wanted to write this aside from just to explore their relationship. Multi-chaptered.

SPUN SUGAR, GROUND SPICE, NOT EVERYTHING IS NICE

I’ve talked about this one multiple times before. Post!canon, Jon gets custody of his cousin and it follows him raising her and working at a cafe and healing over the years. Mostly plotted out but needs some refining. Maybe. Multi-chaptered.

AT THE END OF THE NIGHT

Crossover time! Elsewhere is the MCU. Jon comes through as the Snap/Blip is reversed. Eventually finds himself working at a cafe with one Steven Grant. Plot happens. Really need to put more thought into this one. Multi-chaptered.

DOWN THE PANOPTICON AND INTO THE SEWERS

TMNT crossover. As I said, imaging Jon being a spider mutant yokai hybrid made me white out. Have nothing regarding plot yet.

And. That’s it. I guess. There are a couple others, a few one-shots, but… idk. There ya go.

thearchivtheantichrist:

ok so I’m gonna get very rude to martin in this one so jf yr a martin liker and don’t like heavy criticism, unhh dont read

Ok so ive never been a fan of martin, but I think I don’t like s5 Martin the most. Now I’m sure you could come up with plenty excuses, some more valid than others, but he honestly kind of sucked, like, personality wise.

Martin started most fights, and almost never tried to apologize for them, whereas Jon is genuinely, constantly apologetic. Martin pushed Jon to use his powers a lot during the beginning of the apocalypse. Martin blamed Jon—subtly or unsubtly—when his statements were unhelpful to their cause later on.

And maybe you’ll say, well, Jon was so rude to martin before… well then Martin didn’t need to date him, like I’d be way less peeved if they were just two unfortunate people surviving together, but they aren’t, Martin chooses to be like this despite likely knowing Jon the best

I’d argue if martin had been more genuinely supportive and not just surface level empathetic, Jon would’ve considered mag 200 more. And I’m likely wrong and bias, but still.

thearchivtheantichrist:

Literally anything couldve changed the trajectory of Tma, but I think the thing that fucks me up the most, is the fact that I’d argue a lot of the reason Jon even ends up in that precarious place between avatar and human (”how much of you is left”) is because after all that time nobody, not even martin treated him like a human. Jon tried his damnedest to help, and persevere, and he did what humans do to survive, make bad choices. And everyone invalidates that. His needs, like statements, are viewed of that like a dog needing to be taken on a walk. His acknowledgments on his capabilities are never about him, and only the powers, the things he can take and steal and do, and martin pushes him to use the powers and yet is so shocked when Jon is more horrified with himself than when he started.

I really need to write this fic cause there’s two scenes so far I’ve written I think will cause people emotional damage and I need to inflict it upon the world.

yoki-loves-stars:

Very real Jon and Agnes parallels trust

Tma spoilers up to mag200!

Starting from their childhood. Both of them were outcasts with dead parents, raised by people, who hadn’t really known how to handle them properly.

Jon was a “difficult child”, who often would wander off without any warning, who was hard to keep still and obedient, who often would talk back and would take any criticism very personally. Raised by his grandmother, who was already grieving her son and daughter in law, who already raised her own children, now having to deal with a young kid, she had practically no idea how to handle, and not having any friends, he, naturally, grew up very lonely.

Agnes as a child would have frequent outbursts sometimes even causing death in the cult. She also was a "difficult child”, but, in this case, both by being a child and being a god.

While Jon had a traumatic experience as a kid, that was tied to the Web, Agnes has been surrounded by the Web’s servants and victims almost her entire childhood. By saving Ivo Lensik and killing Raymond Fielding I think it’s safe to say that she definitely didn’t enjoy it, but i wouldn’t say she was traumatised by it. Instead it was probably very lonely.

Then we move on to their adulthood. One of theirs main themes is craving humanity, while not being fully human, and being gods in a way.

Agnes tries to simply mimic people around her to try and “fit in”, without really understanding why they do what they do, to pretend to be human, a person, someone with the most ordinary life.

Jon, on the other hand, tries to prove that he is still human. He’s ashamed to be not human, to have any sort of power. He wants to be human so badly, but he barely knows what humanity is for him. Of course, he’s not physically human anymore, but what makes him convinced of his lost humanity, is how other people view him. (I do have a huge analysis of Jon, that talks about his humanity in depth so you can check it out if you want!)

But even before that Jon did show signs of being misunderstood as a human. Both Jon and Agnes were still very much outcasts even as they grew up. Honestly this part very much seems like something Martin could say about Jon.

They both carry the burden if their destiny and their godhood.

While Jon only found out about his destiny at the very end, for Agnes she knew nothing more than her destiny. She never wanted it, but it’s all she ever have known. Jon feels guilty and scared of his destiny, it’s something he genuinely hates. Both of them feel trapped by it and the world reminds them of it.

Both of them are unknown despite quite literally having completely opposite ways of their story being told.

Agnes is not known. None of her close ones could really describe who she was as a person. Not the people, who raised her, not the person, who was in love with her. She, as the chosen one, has no voice in her own story. People barely knew her, barely cared to.

Jon, on the other hand, is the main character. You, as a listener, know so much about him, how he’s feeling, what he went through. And yet, while they are a few people like Georgie, Melanie and Basira, to whom he was a friend, who knew him, and cared about him, at the end the world doesn’t know him. Every single person knows him, some saw him in their dreams, but they only know him as the Archivist and nothing more. To them, he’ll forever be the Archivist.

Lastly, their love and their death.

These quotes are here just because I constantly think about them:

These two scenes just seem so similar, especially, with the context of their destinies and how they feel about it. Again, Jack and Martin feel very similar, especially how they view their lovers.

Something something your lover, who you often don’t really understand, who often leads you to wonder what’s going on in their head, to wonder how they really feel, dying by their own hand (/by yours when asked to kill them) after a kiss, while crying over you and feeling guilty for the pain they’ve caused you in this moment. Is this anything.

I think Jon and Agnes are incredibly similar even if it’s not intentional. When you try to view Jon from an outside perspective you see how many similarities his life has to Agnes’. It all started when over a year ago I thought about Agnes’ conversation with Jack about destiny on that park bench, and just how much it reminded me of Jon and Martin. And then it all just clicked so here we are.

I just think it’s rich that everyone in the podcast and fandom says that Jon needed to rely on people and ask them for help but also shame him for doing those exact things because of his abrasive personality and worse actions making it hard for people to empathize with him. Saying he needed to listen to others and heed their advice while also saying that those people weren’t required to give that advice or help him. Contradictions upon contradictions. And no where is this more exemplified in how Georgie tells him to ‘find an anchor’ for his humanity then tells said ‘anchor’ to cut him off immediately for that ‘anchor’s’ safety. Make it make sense.

The biggest issue in adapting TMA is, quite obviously, the length of it. The main benefit that comes from podcast is that you can reasonably have 200 episodes to craft a story in. With television, however, production would necessitate a huge cut. Meaning entire episodes or statements would need to be removed. Meaning the slow creep of realizations cannot happen. Meaning restructuring of plot beats or character moments. Wheat from chafe and all that. It could be doable. It could even improve things. Unfortunately, with how television shows seem determined not to go beyond 6-10 episodes a season any more, there would be A LOT of sacrifices.

To that point, we can look at the length of episodes as they stand. Given a 45-52 minute runtime in a television episode, you could adapt two or three of the 15-20 minute podcast episodes into one. Especially when adapting season one. Potentially still, for a certain degree, keeping that slow creep. At that point, as previously stated, the most thought would need to be put into what exemplifies and progresses not just the plot but themes of the series. At this time I will not be debating which statements or episodes could be culled. That is for another day.

Continuing on to the statements, there is the question of how to portray them. There is the obvious difference in medium – audio versus visual – and therefore a difference in what it should literally look like. It cannot simply be whoever is acting as Jon sitting at a desk and reading. So. Would they be snippets of visuals with narration overlying it? Would they be fully filmed and acted like any other scene? Would there be any indication of Jon as a watcher or the Fears? Would there be a shift to where Jon, when it is a live statement giver, acts out the statement? Would he be in the background? Unobtrusive at first, then more obvious? Would that obviousness only come to a head during the Eyepocalypse? There would also be the opportunity to fix where the fifth season failed as there would no longer be episode after episode of the same moral conundrums and naval gazing to bloat things out, streamlining things. Less room for emotional exhaustion to sour things.

I haven’t spoken on the metaplot part as that wouldn’t be too much of an issue to handle. A competent writers room can figure out how to structure an episode that balances things out satisfactorily. The main concern in that would be in how to condense those 200 episodes of development in a way that wouldn’t feel unearned and out of nowhere. Especially as the cast list, in a shorter series, would potentially need to be condensed as well. This is what would make or break this hypothetical adaptation. Do you do away with one cop or the other? Do you take away one assistant to better feature another?

Beyond the Archives, what would be done about the marks? The rituals? That is, if the series even gets to that point. Less episodes, less seasons, less time to make any globe-trotting or kidnapping or foreshadowing make sense. Even with the aforementioned combining of podcast episodes into the longer television episodes.

Any conclusion to be drawn from this, and one I can see being why there hasn’t been anything going forward to develop a hypothetical adaption, is that the effort of going back through 200 episodes to beat them into something they weren’t mean to be, is idiotic at best and futile at worse. The show is there, faults and all, and anything that would be ‘fixed’ through an adaptation isn’t worth what would be 'lost’ with all that is stacked against it.

justatiredghost:

once again in awe of Jonathan Sims as a voice actor and how much character and meaning behind everything he says. The way he interacts with the assistants in late s3, hesitant and nervous, trying really hard to keep his anger in check when he butts heads with someone, and the immediate enthusiasm if someone reacts positively to him. When he seemed so nervous, but then when he showed Daisy the explosives and she was thrilled, he seemed so happy and relieved
