You can tell that they just took your whole blog as a personal attack, and while disagreeing with your opinion, they actually have no arguments to support themselves, so they just throw insults in an attempt to make you feel hurt.

Like a lot of martin fans, they see martin as more of an extension of themselves rather than a complex fictional character, and they angrily defend him instead of stopping and reflecting on why he acts the way he does and why some may dislike him. You can enjoy martin of course!! You can defend him! But it's important to think of him separately from yourself. He is not a "sweet cinammon roll" or anything like that. He cannot be confined to a single stereotype.

Genuinely it's such an interesting fear and there's so much that could have been done with it and I'd like to hear someone else's opinion especially someone else who really likes a flesh Avatar such as you with Jared

honestly, i do feel like there’s a balance they have to manage with like 14 fears and only 200 episodes (some of which like aren’t even statements), and i feel like the Flesh is actually like relatively well developed with those constraints. There were lots of interesting key ideas they managed to establish in each of the statements, and Jared has like 3 episodes just about him as a character so he’s come out of it pretty well.

There will obviously be more that can be discussed and prioritised in fandom, but i think The Flesh got pretty decent rep in the writing too. There will obviously always be new ideas for statements and stuff, but i feel like there isn’t anything particular major they missed out on in the actual show.

Jon - starved for a human connection, martin loved the version of him before he became a monster - reciprocating those feelings would somehow make him more human in his own eyes

Martin - only the echo of his past feelings remain, he is afraid of the monster jon has become. He's grossed out by Jon's new behaviour - his need to make statements for example

Them sticking together is a desperate attempt at preserving their past selves and their own humanity. Also martin benefits from sticking with jon, because it lets him travel freely and unharmed throughout the fearscape - a good reason to stay with him even when his romantic feelings for the man had long faded.

This is NOT a healthy relationship. This is a trauma bond. They are not "cute gays travelling through the apocalypse together uwu 🥹🥹"

TBTH after relistening to TMA dozens of times Martin ended up annoying me too because it feels like his characterization wasnt decided till like S3... maybe even later. I think if he had been written to be more committed to The Web (something thats all over S1, and just dissapears until S5). It just feel like a wasted oppurtunity. HOWEVER my unpopular fandom opinions are that Basira and Georgie are insufferable. I hate the "well just don't do it" shit attitude they have. ESPECIALLY Basira. Makes my teeth itch. I'm honestly really happy to see someone else who's a fan of Jared because they are always very mischaracterized by the fandom such as making them a r-word-ist or saying that any ship with them is a proship even if they aren't portrayed as abusive and I feel like that's a real waste of the potential the character has so seeing anyone with any kind of complex ideas about them makes me so excited because they are genuinely one of my favorite avatars if not my favorite

I'm nowhere near a hater on the same level as you but I will admit for the first four seasons I found him soooo annoying. I did not get the hype around him when he first showed up, and while Jon is maybe unnecessarily mean to him on professional tapes (like, Jon, dude, this is official record stuff and you look SOOO unprofessional making your beef public) I definitely understood why he was annoyed. Sometimes, insecure characters are actually annoying as hell. I can say this because he is (gasp) fictional.

I would say Martin would be more bearable if he went to therapy, but he definitely would refuse to go. He's sort of obsessed with his own sadness to the point where it's just annoying. I understand, I do, I also have mental health struggles and sometimes being low feels safer than being okay, but that's bad and something that needs to be worked through. He wouldn't even say he doesn't need therapy, he knows he does. He's just be like

i just feel like if you’re making a podcast character that’s the embodiment of police brutality, I just… don’t really want to be on the side of police brutality??

obviously i appreciate the nuance and the ability to make complex characters or whatever, but i can just never find her sympathisable when it’s reflecting such a genuine real world issue. i feel like obviously I’m biased because it’s different with Jon and Jared and Jane, but that’s because people who feast on your evil twisted bedtime stories and people who steal your bones and put them elsewhere and people who infest you with bugs and mould just… don’t exist. obviously.

daisy, however, is obviously a reflection of a person who could genuinely exist, and does - she’s a police officer who uses this power to satiate her own desire for violence and hunting and adrenaline, and that is not something unique to the podcast.

i just feel that the fact she’s echoing these genuine issues in the word isn’t handled well, or really at all, by much of the fandom during discussions of her, and like sure haha toxic werewolf yuri, but like…??

it was just for this reason, and the fact she’s obviously introduced while like genuinely traumatizing Jon in the worst time of his life, that I just can’t really bring myself to empathise with her enough to feel any more than just like contempt towards her tbh.

Martin Blackwood never really changed.

His attitude changed, sure - he went from "everyone I care about hates me so I must deserve it" to "I am terrible but so are these people and since they've been so mean to me I should take revenge, I'm not as weak as they all think". But his way of thinking stays the same throughout the whole series.

What I dislike about Martin and what stays the same even after his "character development" is that despite claiming to be a carer, he consistently fails to consider things from other people's perspective, and his fans overlook that part. I've always felt like his attempts at caring for people (bringing them tea etc) were somewhat clumsy, and that he never actually knew what they even wanted - i think he said so himself when he was in the Lonely that giving people tea when they seemed down was easier than discussing their problems and actually finding out what's wrong. It shows when he just jumps to sacrifice himself when Peter Lukas took over the Instutute - he was so quick to sacrifice himself and give himself away and he didn't even stop to consider that it might be unnecessary, or that there might be another solution, like discussing with his team. His help is less about actually helping and more about punishing himself and not being useless. Since he hates himself, that kind of help is not only "making up for the space he takes up" in his mind, but it's also kind of like self harm.

It also shows in season 5 when he straight up refuses to listen to Jon's explanations of the apocalypse and the statements in general.

Despite being so set on sacrificing himself for others, berating himself, and generally always trying to fix everything for everyone by himself, Martin has only ever considered his own needs.

It actually makes him feel very real as a character, but unfortunately most of the fandom has dumbed him down to two versions - season 1-3 "cutie shy softie boy with a crush on his boss awwww" and season 4-5 "hot sexy man that wants to take revenge on everyone who has ever wronged him and he is so in love with his monster boyfriend uwu❤️❤️ jon and martin are so cute together ❤️ " no they're not. Maybe Martin was fine with Jon before the apocalypse - admittedly i don't remember the safehouse ep all that well, and that seems to be what got everyone to ship them, but after the end of the wold, when they're travelling through the Fearscape together, they are so very not happy and healthy. There are so many problems. And Martin straight up refusing to listen to anything that Jon has to say about the Eyepocalypse is just the cherry on top.

Towards the end of the story, they use each other more as anchors that help them keep the remaining bits of their humanity. They ground each other, true, and they NEED each other, but their relationship is messy and tainted with the feelings of guilt, loss, and blame. They barely communicate their feelings and intentions. They stick together in order to survive, but the only thing bonding them together is shared trauma. They are broken by what they experienced. They actually don't know each other at all, just the idealized, pre-apocalypse versions of eachother. It makes me quite upset that the vast majority of the fans missed that very important aspect of their relationship.

So yeah, maybe they are canon in the sense that they were briefly in a "romantic" relationship. But the fanon version is sooo romanticized and warped and twisted and changed and made to fit into one of those neat "workplace-enemies-to-lovers" boxes like tags on ao3.

To sum up: i don't like Martin as a person, but he's written well and realistically as a character. I despise fanon Martin and Jmart. Jmart is canon, but not in the way most people seem to think.
