i feel like this is one of the reasons the extinction makes for an interesting fear that somewhat disrupts the whole system, because what you’re implying there I assume is that like billionaires or corporation owners would be extinction avatars, which, to be fair, feels like a logical step to make, but we see in the podcast how, to be an avatar of something, you need to at least have a passion connected to it, at least some kind of emotional investment to make the fear such an important part of your life that it consumes you to some level, and this just clearly doesn’t align with the apathy that you see in individuals that could incite real change - there is no fear there, because they have nothing to fear, and there is no real passion there towards the actual fear, moreso just towards profit. If there was the real passion or care towards the fear that is needed to become an avatar, they would not be in that position of power in the first place.
having said that, i suppose i could see potential avatars in the dehumanisation of one’s self in the chase of exponential growth and profit, which could be loosely linked to the fear, but no billionaire wants climate change, as a catastrophe would obviously lead to less money, and therefore im not sure how an avatar like that serving the extinction would form, unless you can become an avatar nonchalantly out of apathy, which i do think is a very interesting potential question that the show could’ve explored

Hi, stumbled across this blog and I absolutely get why somebody would dislike Martin and certain framing (or lack thereof) of his actions but the take on the lonely as a filler/boring fear is a bit confusing to me. And I can’t really tell if you’re being serious or doing it for the bit
This might just be me tho because of my own (unhealthy) coping mechanism and how i have seen isolation and being disconnected from your peers affect others and myself but I understand it as a much more layered fear than it is often characterized
You were talking about how the extinction has a certain inherent humanity to it and I think the lonely does aswell but in a much more social regard. As humans we consistently navigate social settings and also require emotional connections and relationships, now imagine these being taken away or, what is often worse, never developing them in the first place. It’s not necessarily the being alone in a room that is terrifying but much more the social isolation and the from that resulting disconnect from your own emotions and the unbreachable wall that is build by repeated rejection and social missteps.
You said that things about the lonely can often be attributed to other fears, I disagree but I would really be interested in what exactly you mean by that and your further thoughts on the lonely as a fear
im sort of exaggerating for the bit but most of my takes on the lonely are at least semi-serious
i sort of don’t care about the reason you project onto The Lonely as i can kind of assume its because you were lonely at some point. that’s typically the reason.
i think that yeah most of the fears are rooted in humanity, (with the exception of the flesh/the hunt which is what makes them interesting) so i don’t see that as a reason necessarily for it to be an especially interesting fear. i also think the being disconnected from people is kind of well-covered area within the fears (as a very core part of the stranger and the spiral maybe and really most of them to some extent if you twist it right) which is my main problem with it. it sort of just does one thing and it’s not a niche enough thing to be interesting and is also something that could be covered by other fears.
Just a couple examples off the top of my head:
Loneliness due to existentialism and there being loads of people out there making it easy to be lost in a crowd = the Vast
Loneliness due to feeling disconnected from others and feeling alienated or like you’re intrinsically different = the Stranger
Loneliness through grief or loss = the End
Loneliness through bad relationships = typically the Web or potentially the Stranger again / another fear depending on the situation
(there are probably more but i can’t think of them right now). Therefore I just feel like it is kinda the weakest fear, and wouldn’t be such an important part of the podcast if it wasn’t turning so relationship-centered and needed the conflict created from The Lonely to act as a catalyst and conflict for this
I remember the first time I heard MAG 169 Fire Escape was the first time I really stopped and thought "wow Martin is kind of a dick". And then I began to notice all the other things about him - the controlling behaviour, the black and white mentality, the selfishness, the way he's clearly using Jon's power to get what he (and only he) wants out of this eyepocalypse. The list goes on.
Anyway, my point was that I didn't realize just how toxic the jmart relationship was until Jon offered Martin the choice in 169 - to go into the burning building after Jude Perry, or not. Until that point, Martin, a character who has repeatedly made the choice to be passive in their decisions, throws a tantrum about going in the building. And Jon offers him the choice not to, and agrees to abide by his decision. The moment Jon shows Martin that respect, Martin throws it away. "That's not a fair decision to put on me."
Bitch please, YOU were the one throwing the tantrum! And when Jon responds by respecting your wishes, you're going to actively reject that!
It gets even worse in MAG 173 Night Night. Martin throws another tantrum.
Jon: I don’t know what you want me to do. Martin: I want you to use your power. I want you to help them; I want you to make things better! Jon: There is no better anymore. Martin: (increasing in volume, emotion) You keep – saying that, and I hate it! Jon: (also giving in to the argument) I keep saying it because it keeps being true; you know that! Martin: What I know, is that leaving children here is – (struggles for words) i-it’s inexcusable; it’s monstrous! Jon: (overlapping, firm) Martin. Tell me what you want me to do, and I will do it!

ugh i knowww, and like admittedly im not sure id be MUCH better in an apocalypse so like ill give him some degree of grace but it just really stands out to make him more unlikable when none of the other characters are that whiney.
i think it’s a combination of the fact that he clearly just can’t accept the situation and, and therefore complains about everything, and also the fact that he’s unable to actually do anything whatsoever, that just makes him so irritating this season. he just so clearly doesnt actually know what he wants. and, like, to be fair, it’s not entirely his fault because he’s in an impossible situation where all he can do is walk for ages and witness all this suffering, but him just yabbering on and complaining while doing nothing about any of the problems he’s talking about (because he can’t) just serves to make him sound incredibly whiney. Like if he’s meant to be a “suffering in silence” Lonely avatar then why won’t he shut the hell up for once
Season 5 Martim should've died actually. Its the only solution to making him likeable that doesn't involve rewriting him completely.
That man is living in a delicate isolated bubble of his own creatuon and gets verbally violent any time you try to give him a taste of reality. Listening to his conversations with Jon was painful. He has a terribly limited understanding of the world around him, and he reminds me of a particularly spoiled child. I know he had a hard childhood yadda yadda but that is an explanation. Not an excuse. And nothing can excuse him being a huge CUNT!
i love all of this except for the first part tbh. i think there is nothing redeeming or likeable about the act of dying in and of itself and also that would make all the kinnies about 30x more insufferable. although if he just kinda pissed off and disappeared and no-one bought it up again I’d be pretty chuffed about that
