The thing about jmart that gets me is that Jon has been treated so horribly by everyone around him (with a couple exceptions) in season four, is constantly told that he’s a horrible monster for eating people’s fears despite being forced into the whole thing and Martin, the person who is supposed to love and care for him… treats him exactly the same. Calls all avatars evil and horrible to Mr “i am an avatar grappling with my humanity”’s face without even a scrap of nuance and we are still meant to believe that they are a sweet couple and ohhhhh how tragiccccc that they have to stab each other. Like. At least when Basira or Melanie did something they weren’t Jon’s romantic partner.
I know omg like Martin just acts like everyone else does and for some reason he doesn’t get any shit for it when he does it? it’s all kinnies not wanting to think critically about the character that they’ve been using as their like self-insert i swear 🥀🥀

may be a hot take but i think the fact minors can access 18+ content by just clicking a button that says ‘yes im totally over 18 trust me’ is like. totally fine tbh. its a non-issue. i dont care if curious teenagers are looking at porn. they’ve been doing that for as long as porn has existed. id rather teens explore their sexuality through images on the internet than rush into real life experiences when they’re not ready for it yknow. the UK is trying to put stricter age verification in place (which in turn is becoming an online privacy nightmare) and like. for what. who is it helping. why is this a problem.

honestly I see where you're coming from with jmart. Not as much with the character development- I personally feel like the characters were developed pretty smoothly. I think RQ was sort of intentionally starting martin with that "kinnie bait" nervous guy thing. Most characters like that tend to be liked by other characters, but Jon hates him through a good chunk of S1 (likely because he has said personality traits.) I think the TMA fandom grossly mischaracterizes him- (which to be completely fair was spurred on by RQ by not fully commiting to Martin's development.)
It's sort of like a Romeo and Juliet thing. People act like it's some hot take to say that their relationship wasn't great when obviously it wasn't great, it ended in a double suicide (and in jmart's case, a murder-suicide.) I personally am a huge fan of abusive characters, especially mutually abusive as jmart sort of is. I think martin certainly has a lot of potential as a concept but RQ fumbled the ball in S5. I'd say they do certainly have a shot at fixing it in TMP, but that could be wishful thinking. Honestly as someone with NPD who loves to project cluster B's onto characters I like, jmart is a PRIME example of an NPD/BPD relationship. Martin does swing wildly back and forth on a lot of things and feelings and honestly I think part of that was intentional- I don't think he's actually meant to have a solid idea about what he wants in S5. which is pretty uncommon to see in almost any narrative- characters are "supposed" to have clear motivations, and when they don't it comes off as shitty development.

i do think that yeah sometimes martin could lend himself towards being an interesting character, and i do really like your kinda interpretation of him, but for me like things are too wishy-washy with his motivations and ideas that it’s like who the hell even is this guy 🥀 i think that rq are good writers even with all their like controversies and all that which is why ughhh i just love the statements, but also like they’re so clearly most comfortable with horror writing that any idea of a healthy, non-abusive jmart just feels forced from the fandom because it’s just not like that at all, but also it feels a little forced from the writers to pander to these fans imo but that’s less relevant. sorry im rambling here im not really sure what i was trying to say
You have some super valid criticisms of Martin's character and his fans, also I really respect the commitment to being a hater.
Anyway I started out really liking Jmart but it was actually through the process of writing fanfiction that I realized that
A) the ship does not work in a cute and healthy way. These people would not have gotten together if Jon hadn't been broken and changed by the horrors over the course of 3 years
And B) Martin is just not as interesting as people make him out to be. I can find all sorts of interesting things to dig into about the rest of the cast but Martin is just Not That Deep.
Maybe if he hadn't wound up the love interest something more useful could have been done with him but oh well.
Also when people hate Basira but excuse Martin it makes me want to get out the Raid. Martin took out his frustrations on Jon just as much as everyone else in season 4 but in a different way, at least Basira had more reason to be an ass and she pulled her weight. She worked hard to keep those people alive, and no she wasn't nice but she was dutiful. God forbid a woman do anything.
I have come to dislike the way the Fandom draws him as of late in that he usually looks too soft and baby faced. He's the same age as Jon, a grown man- so why does he always look younger than the rest of the cast?

also you’re SO right the fanon mandated designs always piss me off because they often make martin look so young and then also give john wrinkles and greying hair while like neither of these characters are even in their 30s yet?? 😭
like obviously people age at different rates and i mean john has easily gone through enough stress to have that reflect physically onto him (if that’s an actual thing that happens idk if there’s science there) but when they do this and then give martin like far younger features it just sometimes a little weird to me in a way that i can’t quite describe?
maybe it’s because this often goes hand in hand with designs making john vaguely brown, and it can feel like they’re using the designs in this way to make martin, who’s pretty much always portrayed as white, appear as more innocent or pure with youth
but also i may be reaching there or looking too deep into it im just putting thoughts down there idk it could also just be because most of the people who like martin are only doing so because they’re transmasc teenagers (and therefore are more likely to have more youthful features) who are projecting onto him

i think that jmart can't ever really be happy and a truly healthy relationship because both of them are so mentally unwell and traumatized etc etc i do think that rq did at least try to point that out ? because iirc correctly they have some conversation about how they're only even compatible because of the horrors and shared trauma which is !!! a very bad basis for a relationship
i also think that martin is for sure kinda confusing about what he wants and ig Who he is at his core but i think that's part of his character if that makes sense like he doesn't know so we don't know (which is annoying. but)
i feel like a nice happy healthy jmart in the fanbase for some things is perfectly fine bc like. therapy. but mainly i just go with assuming it's someone au or just. they love the characters enough to put them in Situations

i think sometimes people just aren’t compatible and jmart very clearly are not and i think that’s the biggest problem with them tbh.
that and the fact that martin doesn’t really seem like he loves john at all (or even likes him) in canon, and never really progressed past a teenage-esque crush on the idea of him. this is clear in how martin belittles and shames john for his needs and his avatar behaviour that he can’t fully control and how he’s completely unable to really accept any part of him that he doesn’t like.
that man would not be compromising at all about anything if he didn’t literally need john because of the whole apocalypse happening
like they have no hope of any relationship if they don’t life-or-death need eachother because you don’t want to risk ruining your relationship with the single other person in the world that’s meant to like you.

im not sure it’s even trauma that’s dividing them because like trauma is the only thing that’s even uniting them atp. like it’s the only reason they’re together and there is no way that they would stay together if either of them was in any way well-adjusted because they just don’t have chemistry or really any basis for a relationship other than the fact they are literally each others only options and neither of them want martin to be alone/Alone and obviously john also doesn’t want to ruin his one chance remaining of human connection. and that’s kinda why i think that any attempts at creating a healthy jmart are oversimplifying or mischaracterising the characters and/or the relationship
