It's actually crazy that you're getting jumped so much for having an opinion

I mean, its kinda obvious that in a fandom with a large amount of people in it not everyone will think the same way. And not only that, you also have logical arguments to support your stance instead of just hatred towards the character!!! Very rare these days!!!!

And yet people are constantly yelling at you, like little kids losing an argument. They can't just like the character themselves, they also have to force that opinion on everyone else and act like there is only one valid way to perceive the character.

(Its very tiktok behaviour of them yk. Baby's first fandom. "Everything is about me". Sometimes you just gotta go "ah, i completely disagree with this stranger on the internet! Well, time to block them.")

Tbh i feel like those people are all martin kinnies because i think he would do that. Just absolutely resent everyone who dares to think differently than him.

Also im glad you liked my stance on jmart shippers that i sent you a while back xx

martinblackwoodhater:

people do get a little defensive at times and it’s like… woah babe 😨😨 only talking about the character here 😨😨 it’s because martin’s a character that can so easily be projected onto by people that think they’re like morally superior for who they kin and then they get defensive because they think im attacking them personally and it’s like noooo im not i promise ‼️

You answered an anon about jongerrymartin some time ago, and it made me think about the ship for a moment.

First of all, i absolutely CANNOT picture them getting together. With jongerry it kind of makes sense? - you have jon meeting book-gerry and they seem to kinda get on, and you can muster up something based on that encounter like AUs itd. I mean, as scarce as their interactions are, you have a pretty solid foundation and you can just make up the rest as you go. But i can't imagine where martin would fit in that. I cannot imagine him just... stumbling upon gerry.

But let's put their imaginary first meeting aside for a moment. Both gerry and martin had a complicated and frankly unhealthy relationship with their mothers, and i've seen a lot of people (shippers) making their bond revolve around that. Which is nice! Woohoo parallels!

And yet the ship between jon, gerry and martin just does not make sense from a canon viewpoint. And by that i mean the characters' personalities makes it impossible to work out. Or, to be honest, just martin's personality. That man is insanely jealous of everyone that dares to be near jon, and i dont mean it in a "silly quirky" way.

If they ever were to become a throuple (like in a completely detached from the canon setting) i feel like they would get on fairly well at first, but if they were to start displaying affection to eachother in a different way than simply friendly, martin would immediately become jealous and then just take apart their relationship with gerry piece by piece until only him and jon are in the equation.

(Honestly that's more about season 5 martin. If it were the earlier seasons martin, he would probably do the opposite thing and slowly remove himself from the relationship, because "they don't need him anyway" and "he's just happy to br around and help" and "he wouldn't want to get in the way of jon's happiness" etc.)

This got kinda long and im sorry. My main point is, as usual, that i am upset by the mischaracterization/misunderstanding of martin that's so popularized by fanon. I honestly feel like i could like him! Maybe even relate to him in a way! But because of the way he's presented by fandom, upon hearing the name martin every tma fan goes "aw hes the cute gay one! The guy thats a big softie but has an unexpected dangerous side! Yess king stand up for yourself!! Don't let them treat you like shit!!" And dear lord it's so shallow. He's more than that. His actions have reasons, and they are not always "good" reasons either!! Like jon smashing the fucking table and freeing the notThem - nobody's saying that it was a smart move!! Let him make mistakes i beg of you!

As im typing this I realized that most people who do that are the same people who relate to him, and it struck me that perhaps they reduce and compress martin's character to just make him into the traits they see themselves as, (i mean: shy, people pleaser, bad-relationship-with-mother, likes tea, big crush on someone who doesn't notice him - you know, those traits that could apply to basically anybody and ESPECIALLY to insecure teenagers - the main demographic) and then they fill the rest with their own personality traits.

Imo in order to properly judge a character it's important to step aside for a moment and consider them from another POV.

I feel like ive done way too many "overly-long-rant-regarding-fanon-martin" asks and that im starting to repeat myself like a scratched CD. Im gonna have to cook up something about jon as well. AND his relationship with georgie.

martinblackwoodhater:

people do seem to pick and choose what qualities they want to even think about when writing/observing martin in any way. obviously this is natural and makes sense with any character because people are going to focus most on what they’re biased towards for a myriad of reasons, but it’s CRAZY w martin fans ive noticed. which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but also likeeee it does make for a less diverse experience, especially when most of the fans seem to focus on the same kinda things so some qualities get severely overlooked and this lowkey makes for a far less interesting character.

my point is that this is extra prevalent in shipping, especially with more like weird ships like this that are particularly unsupported in canon, and it’s lead to somewhat of a weird like mass delusion almost ((obviously a hyperbole)) in terms of his character, where people are - as you said - pretty much just turning him almost into a self-insert. ive probably got more to say but not rn sorry im gonna go check if my waffles r done cooking

Almost every fan piece of media depicting Martin is just blatant mischaracterization that either puts him in the role of "sweet shy cinnamon roll" or "hot sexy guy smiting his opps". And they always without fail romanticize or downplay his flaws.

I think it's mainly cause so many young fans find him relatable, and thus they have warped him so that he would fit into a versatile stereotype, which is AWFUL.

You can like a character just because, but in order to really understand them you have to step away from your own carefully created version for a moment. I love Jon and am in full support of any criticism on the man, he deserves it! Let people hate Martin!!! It's good and constructive!!

It pisses me off so much that his fans don't allow others to hate on him. Its always "wait but whyyy?? Why would you hate my sweetie??? :((((" they cannot comprehend nuanced characters they're always watered down

martinblackwoodhater:

people have SUCH an immediate kneejerk reaction to even the concept of someone disliking martin like they literally cannot fathom it and it’s like ?? he’s not even that likable of a character like im not being that radical here 😓

Martin Blackwood has the mannerisms of a chronically online insecure teenager. How he managed to get a position in academia is beyond me. Elias must've thought him very easy to kill, sad that he was wrong.

Martin should've gotten a beating from an avatar at least once. Maybe that would've caused his character to finally develop AND made him actually sympathize with his boyfriend

martinblackwoodhater:

and maybe it would be sexy. maybe.

There’s this misconception that in s5 Martin was bloodthirsty and wanted to kill. No, he didn’t. He just wanted these people dead. He didn’t want to do the killing himself. He used Jon to kill for him, so that he wouldn’t have to feel guilty about it. And I’m sure that if he was the one with the power to kill, he wouldn’t have been as eager to abuse it. Because then he would have to take responsibility for his own actions for once.

I prefer you over the actual hater account because lately he's just kinda been insulting the people behind TMA and trying to paint them as bad LOL

It’s cool that you like me or whatever but when has the hater insulted TMA writers. I once saw him say he didn’t like Alex Newall thats it

You don’t actually see him post TMA criticism anymore. He’s just answering the asks about why he’s posting about TMA if he doesn’t like it lmaooo. I don’t even know which of his posts these are referring to and I’ve read all of them

Gerry and Oliver making out with Jon. Send tweet. Martin doesn't get invited

Wonderful idea. Also I need to think of Jon and Oliver more. There’s a lot of potential here.

Both of them, at their lowest points in life, being slowly consumed by a power which they do not yet understand. Trying to fight it, go against it, and ultimately failing. I really need to finish my relisten ugh I can feel something there but am not quite ready yet to put it into words

Love these blogs (yours & martinblackwoodhater's)

I got into TMA backwards. It's the first podcast I ever listened to, but it seemed daunting at first. MAG200 had just released & tumblr was up in arms about it... I heard the ending of MAG200 first before knowing anything else about it. I wanted to get into it, but 200 episodes seemed like a hell of a commitment at the time.

So what did past me do but read fanfiction first to get an idea of the content. HDJDHDHD

It did not prepare me for how far fans of Martin have to stretch to really make him kind & compassionate... because the guy is a prick in the podcast. Like did we listen to the same thing ? fanon Martin is lovely, I wish there was a trace of him in the actual show lmao...

I hate, hate, hate him in season 5. My main gripe is that we had NO time between jmart in season 4 & then suddenly they're thrust into this relationship... where it is so apparent they know nothing about each other.

Martin has never been able to tell when Jon is making a joke, even before season 5... which makes the fact that he still Can't even worse. They don't really banter, it's more them arguing about Jon's decisions... his hypocrisy also drives me up the wall.

It's so clear he doesn't trust Jon at all !! & not only that, he wields him like a gun.. but also has the audacity to say he can't "be that for him" in terms of Jon & the statements...

like sorry Martin.. maybe you'd know about his new needs if you actually bothered to be around him in Season 4. Getting to know what's happening to him instead of isolating yourself for his "protection."

And the... hgghhghh... what do you mean "I take back my apology"? fuck youuu. goddd.

you know how Jude is like. "You've finally got a sniff of power & now you want to settle some old scores." i feel that is true for both of them, but the only means Martin has of that is Jon. it feels so much like he's only using him for his benefit/protection instead of being a loving partner. & it isn't even framed to be unhealthy so it's just. WEIRD.

....

It hurts to be a queerplatonic jondaisy truther. I loved their dynamic in season 4... they were both so isolated & yet they went through something.. beyond traumatic together. they were both seen as monsters (though Daisy was treated like a liability which served for her isolation). They actually spent time together !!! more than jon & fucking martin !!

JON & GERRY HAD MORE CHEMISTRY IN ONE EPISODE THAN JMART IN THE WHOLE PODCAST !!!!

anyways - thank you for reading my rant. HDJDHD

Getting into TMA fandom-first sounds like an absolute nightmare. I’m sorry.

I think that since Martin was a very simple character from the beginning - bland shy guy with no real flaws - fans held on to that vision of him, which in turn made them completely overlook any nuance that might’ve been there. They only noticed those moments that fit their image of the man - Martin bringing tea on their apocalyptic hike, Martin accidentally calling Jon adorable - and overlooked those that weren’t so sugary sweet - Martin refusing to acknowledge Jon’s needs and frankly anything the man said, Martin not caring about anything that doesn’t involve him directly.

I’m not gonna say more since it seems you share my point of view and I would be just repeating myself. JonDaisy is a great ship, same with JonGerry, but that is also because every single ship with Jon is better than the canon one. Almost all of the cast had more in common with Jon than he had with Martin

Your hate for Martin is lowkey so vitriolic that it’s reminiscent of how his ship with Jon started…does this concern you?

martinblackwoodhater:

no

Jon didnt even hate martin all that much. He was just pissed at that man’s utter lack of competence (real)

With the Martin being human and Jon being an avatar arc there are no positive conclusions drawn from it. There is no “love makes you a better person”. It’s just Martin berating Jon for who he has become but also saying that he cares about him (?)

It’s not love that made Jon come back to his senses when he was getting too close to the powers. It was the occasional act of physical violence (slapping/shaking) and I doubt that those particular actions were prompted by love and adoration, rather than Martin’s momentary fear and disgust of fear-influenced Jon. What I’m saying is that any other person could’ve done that, had they been travelling with Jon. Love didn’t play a significant role. We witnessed that others despised Jon for being an avatar as well, and I think it’s safe to assume that they too would do everything in their power to stop Jon from feeding or hurting innconents - but that’s because they hated him and/or perceived avatarhood as violent and monstrous.

Martin’s supposed affection for Jon only resurfaces when Jon tries to go across with his own plan in the last episode, and that one singular act prompted by Martin’s love caused Jon to go with the Web’s plan last minute. The only thing love did for Jon was to strip him of any agency regarding his own life whatsoever. He had to throw away the only decision he could’ve made for himself to appease Martin. His love lost him. His love made him go against everything he believed in.

Love doesn’t fix you, it smashes you into pieces until there is nothing left for you to pick up. The Magnus Archives is not a tragic love story, it isn’t a love story at all. Among many other themes, it is a story about one’s loss of agency. But somehow the narrative completely overlooked that, and instead all that everyone picked up from it was “well they might’ve ended up somewhere else so maybe they’re fine!”. But that is not horror. There is no conclusion drawn it just ends vaguely and hopefully and not at all horror-esque despite it being a horror podcast.
