Jonmartin would’ve been so much more bearable if it weren’t canon and instead just implied, bc then I wouldn’t feel so irritated by the sheer amount of ooc fan content there is.

Fans forget there’s source material in which the characters’ relatioship is already defined (as poorly as it is, it still is.) Nearly all the content of jmart I see is just…. not accurate. “They would not have fucking said that” type deal. The canon is just used to explain Jon’s eye powers and nothing else. No tragedy no lack of compatibility no codependence by circumstance no nothing. Every single trait that might’ve made them interesting is discarded in favour of a fandom cliche.

I mean, the whole “good cows” thing that everyone is swooning over is just collective imagination. The safehouse period is practically nonexistent in canon, and yet it’s considered the most romantic jmart moment. What about the stuff that did happen?

begging to know your thoughts on epiphany

Ehh. It was alright. I actually liked it on my first listen - a nice little break from the horror. Besides, Martin never quite stood out for me back then so I didn’t really care that much. It was ok.

The ep was mainly Martin being an awkward softie as usual, except we got to learn a bit about his hobbies or whatever. He’s a clumsy shy guy with a big fat crush on his boss. Alright. Predictable. Also his poetry is awful. Not a bad thing necessarily, just unpleasant to listen to.

His behaviour is very much like a highschooler’s. First Big Feeling. Could’ve been cute if the cast had remained in an office setting. But trying to have a cute romance side plot in an apocalypse was just bound to fail.

Also this fandom tends to forget that Martin had a crush on Jon, which is by definition shallow. A lot of people say stuff like “Martin loved Jon since the very beginning” and I get what they’re trying to get across; but there’s a major difference between having feelings for somebody and genuinely loving that person. It was not that serious. Martin’s infatuation was not that deep. He had no real foundation for his feelings and that is very visible in season 5. But like many other things, it’s forgotten in favour of “good cows” and an “eye-spy” joke. How adorable.

WHO THE FUCK SAID MELANIE NEED TO BE SYMPATHETIC TO JON? WHERE? CAUSE I SURE AS FUCK DIDN’T HEAR IT. AND TELL ME WHY SHE’S ACTING LIKE IT’S HIS FAULT SHE’S HAD A ROUGH TIME OF IT WHEN SHEEEEEE WAS THE ONE WHO CHOSE TO GO TO THE INSTITUTE TO GIVE HER STATEMENT???

THREE

FUCKING

TIMES

????

I HATE THIS I HATE THIS FUCKING STUPID PODCAST AND ITS BULLSHIT NONSENSICAL CHARACTER MOMENTS THAT HAVE NO BEARING IN REALITYYYYYYYYY

You know what. I’m coming back to this. Cause seriously.

There’s one thing I viscerally dislike about TMA that has nothing to do with the characters or plot holes and that’s how so much of it is left outside the fucking podcast.

There are so many illusions to moments we don’t see that supposedly inform actions and reactions that pisses me off cause I’m sorry but I just cannot buy it. Especially when these moments are directly contradicted BY THOSE ACTIONS AND REACTIONS.

So I’m sure we’re supposed to infer that Daisy or Basira at some point in season four asked her to be sympathetic to him (do you think she’d be around Georgie if Georgie asked her to be? do you think Melanie ever saw Martin once in season four? no. don’t be absurd). But I can only see Basira ever saying that ONCE. During the time frame between him BEING STABBED by Melanie and the nonconsentual surgery he performed at Basira’s behest. And by the time Daisy came back, I don’t see why Daisy would even bring it up to Melanie, cause Melanie had already begun to be ‘civil’ towards him at that point. But if Daisy had just cause, it wouldn’t have been more than once either. But who knows. Maybe twice is more than enough.

No. At this point. I’m going to assume this is a direct reference to the fandom at large. That this is the writers agreeing with the fandom that any act against Jon by the people in his life is righteous and just and needs no explanation. Jon existing as a whole around actual humans is justification enough.

i’m VERY upset that daisy is getting rescued from the coffin.

i was so happy when she was presumed dead bc i fucking hate her so much

like we get it you love police brutality shut up

very excited for her to actually die

No I get it. Honestly she was awful at first

Still, i have a soft spot for her. Unlike the other characters, she actually reflected upon her actions and realized that they were bad. The rest of the cast made the conscious choice to stay oblivious and put themselves aside, away from all the monstrous happenings - they detached themselves from the Fears and refused to acknowledge that they, too, were partially responsible and not just Jon!

At least Daisy gained self-awareness. At least Jon had somebody who actually understood him.

just listened to 146 rn and oh my GOD i cannot STAND how they’re treating jon

HE DIDN’T ASK FOR ANY OF THIS! HE DOES NOT ENJOY THIS! HE IS ACTIVELY SUFFERING!

bassira needs to shut up bc she doesn’t know what she’s talking abt AT ALL

like has it not been established that he feeds on statements? he doesn’t just do it for funsies he NEEDS THEM TO SURVIVE

i’m not even the biggest fan of jon but oh my god they act like he’s some sadistic schemer or some shit

like yes it causes harm to innocent people but the alternative is him starving to death!

and he only actively fed off ppl when he didn’t have easy access to statements! it’s not like he goes out on the town every night looking for his next victim

jon deserves a year long vacation and a nap oh my fucking god

So true I cannot BEAR to listen to any of the s4 episodes because Jon is getting borderline abused in practically all of them

Everyone’s hypocrisy is pissing me the hell off, even if I can understand where they’re coming from. Basira shames and berates Jon while excusing Daisy’s behaviour in the same breath, despite both of them being the same! Melanie says it’s Jon’s fault that she’s trapped in the Institute, despite the fact she came here on her own accord and Jon wasn’t even present when she accepted the offer from Elias! Ughh it’s so irritating!!

I get it, people are not perfect and everyone in this show makes mistakes. Hell, nearly everything was caused by Jon acting irrationally cause he was so paranoid. But in the end, the podcast paints those hypocritical characters as good and rational!! They never had to suffer the consequences of their actions like Jon had to!! They just got to live semi-happily, no burdens for them to carry except some minor inconveniences maybe!

Also from what I’ve gathered the fandom doesn’t even allow people to criticise those characters. The survivors. You’re not allowed to whisper a word of criticism in their direction. Jon always gets shamed (even playfully) for being rude in the early seasons. People looove to jokingly insult him “oh he’s such an incompetent idiot!! Haha paranoid dumbass! He’s so mean ughh so annoying >:(” but when hes being hit from all directions by the only people left in his life no one even bats an eye, because then they’re such queens of boundaries of course! Cutting off the awful monster to preserve their own wellbeing! Rational and cruel at the same time.

I had to listen to Jon being treated like shit for an entire season just for s5 to offer him half-baked, retracted apologies that didn’t actually mean anything. None of this conflict was ever resolved. He didn’t become friends with all of them by the end. They didn’t accept him as an avatar. Not even his boyfriend did.

Only Jon ever suffers because of his own actions, and on top of that he’s treated like everyone’s punching bag! No one bothered to even try sympathizing with him. He was so utterly alone.

Was it ever explicitly stated that Jon’s hair is going gray? Or is it another widespread headcanon

femalepope:

even back when i was a little girl listening to the Magnus archives i knew i did not gaf about martin blackwood

At no point was it said that the Extinction emerging was overexagerrated by Peter Lukas. We got a statement. We got Simon Fairchild’s views on the thing, and I doubt he would lie to the Watcher. The Extinction was just thrown away and never talked about once it was irrelevant to Martin’s story. And it’s kind of weird for that to happen in the podcast where everything is supposed to connect.

how were gcses?

-not martin

No clue I’m not from the uk

jmart is codependence by circumstance to me, and I 100% agree fanon Martin is a huge mischaracterisation. That being said, I’m also with you on exploring the canon-accurate relationship there — what does it mean to be clinging on to each other as a last-ditch effort to keep a semblance of humanity?

martinblackwoodhaterfan:

Jon is with Martin because Martin keeps him grounded. Martin only likes the “human” part of Jon - the part he can easily wrap his mind around - and so belittling the “monster” part of the man is no problem to him. Without Martin, Jon would’ve succumbed to avatarhood wholly. With Martin “keeping him in check”, he’s only toeing the line and can be (harshly) pulled back a bit, if necessary.

Martin stays with Jon because it offers him protection. Without Jon, he would be likely to succumb to his own little Lonely domain (which we get a brief view of). It’s also stated that by staying with Jon, Martin is shielded from the physical aspect of the horrors - he’s still scared by them, but they cannot hurt him or wound him, and so he can walk freely through the Fearscape in the role of a viewer. It’s the best case scenario for him.

Also, by staying with Jon, who is by default more monstrous than him, Martin gets to reassure himself - by looking at Jon being very far gone, he feels more stable in his own slowly deteriorating humanity (he’s ashamed and afraid of the fact that he, too, has a domain, which makes him the perpetrator following the Fear-infested world logic - he cannot bear the thought of being just as harmful as the other avatars, who he deems terrible monsters that should be killed)

They don’t have many other reasons to stay together, because they simply hadn’t had the time to get to know eachother as people outside of their grotesque eyepocalypse hiking trip in which Jon is actively being consumed by an eldritch being.

In the half an episode we got of them pre-apocalypse, their relationship seems to have had only started blossoming. There is nothing more than the usual kind exchanges between two friendly people. It’s a nice beginning for something bigger, but it certainly isn’t love, not at that time.

After the apocalypse starts, there is suddenly a lot of weight put on their bond - they are quite literally the only ones left. They cannot afford to be casually lovey-dovey when their wellbeing and sanity are at stake.

Had each of them been on their own, I’m sure that witnessing the sufffering of countless people would have its effect on their mental health; it’s also very likely that they would’ve turned into avatars of their own. By staying together, they are also distracting eachother from the horror surrounding them.

Their days are spent walking through fear-filled landscapes, not to mention that each of them has to deal with their own problems - Jon has suddenly found himself in a position that makes him both very powerful and very fragile, and Martin is fighting off his desire to isolate himself and his fear of Avatar-Jon. Every time they say “I love you”, all I can hear is “please don’t leave me”.

Jon and Martin would not have kids they would not start a family ever. Which part of “but we wouldn’t have. Been together, I mean” do you not understand???

I’m still not over season 5. I’m still not over the fact that Jon was pushed aside in his own story.

In the end, the “Ceaseless Watcher’s Special Little Boy” was no more than a disposable puppet. Nothing he had to say mattered. Not a single action he could’ve taken would’ve changed anything, and yet he was blamed for “not trying to help”. No one cared about him as a person, he was just regarded as The Archivist. No one bothered to think of him.

Not only did he get stripped of all agency regarding his own life, not only was he outright despised by all the people he valued, but on top of it all he suddenly stopped mattering in the story itself.

All nuance was forgotten. Even the audience began to see him through the prism of his relationship with Martin. The violent monster. The one who caused it all. The bloodthirsty, vengeful Antichrist. The Archive of all fear. The one who died at the end.

sparky-is-spiders:

The devastating thing is that Jon is actually capable of being incredibly sweetly romantic when he wants to be. And it’s wasted on fucking martin. Of ALL people. That one.

enjoyvoidblack:

The entire time I’ve been relistening to season 5, I can’t stop thinking about Jon Jarchivist’s state of existence as a disability metaphor. The role in things he’s been crafted for makes other people see him as having special privileges - and yes, there are perks! - but nobody really puts as much thought into how it affects his internal life, or the fact that he never chose this. Even the characters who are nice to him will make the occasional dig at him “always having liked being at the center of things”, as if he didn’t spend nearly every moment of the last few years trying to minimize his impact on others as much as possible, and seen it happen anyway only in spite of himself. He has a special diet and a requirement to stop and unburden himself regularly that can come on at inconvenient times, sounds physically uncomfortable if left unanswered, and impossible to leave so for long. The things that are good and restful for the others (sanctuaries from the Eye) fatigue and dissociate him, and his needs are always in an awkward balance with the differing ones of those around him, by practicality alone, even when he’s with a person who loves him.

So many moments in S5 read like mirrors of myself or my other disabled friends hanging out and traveling with abled friends or ones with differing requirements: the awkward half-apologies that happen when you can’t really control something that’s being inconvenient and it’s unpleasant for you too, the pushing yourself in spite of symptoms for something fun or restful for a loved one and yourself, the strained laughter at well-meaning digs, the struggling not to bring down the mood by explaining too much…it’s all there. Being the Archivist is a disability. It is that from the moment the requirement for statements to survive kicks in, but especially especially in Season 5, and that’s special to me. I sort of wish some of the other avatars had been more willing to be true allies, so that Jon could’ve had someone to talk and compare with. I think the company would’ve made him feel a lot less like a monster. (If, yknow, the company available was not mostly literal monsters or avatars too far gone to have much sympathy, alas)

I’ve been SAYING THIS!!!

I’ve had enough of headcanons I need a name for making things up about a fictional character that are completely untrue for them. “They would not have done that in a million years however it would be insanely cool if they did”. Anti canon. Making The Character Rip Absolute Ass Through Mischaracterization. That’s how the best OCs are made

I like to imagine that Jude never really knew Agnes. That she was just a messiah to her, like a god meant to be put on a pedestal. A personification of her beloved power, the destructive force of flame.

How tragic that would be, to be seen and worshipped only as the expectation that was put on you since your very birth. To be loved and worshipped as something you aren’t. The cult only ever saw the potential of Agnes as their messiah. They created a perfect, flawless image of her. She didn’t even get a chance to be human. There was no room for mistakes in her life. She was created to be a tool, something with a purpose. And when a tool can no longer serve its purpose, then it is replaced. She was like an angel, in a way.

No wonder she found joy and solace in such simple things. Sitting down in a coffee shop, in the same place every time. Memorizing her coffee order. I imagine it was like a little ritual to her. A game. Pretending to fit into a plain world.

Would love to say that Jon deserves a gun but honestly I think that if he ever got one then he would just shoot himself

I think that the biggest proof that most Martin fans don't understand Martin is that they never write him really being jealous or bitter. Not like he is in the show. They just make him sad and self-sacrificing and skim over his obvious dislike and disregard for most other people. He's rude to people who don't get along with Jon, with people who get along with Jon too well, and also Jon himself. The first time we hear him, he spends a bunch of time passive-aggressively guilting Jon for Martin getting trapped by Prentiss. Melanie and Basira joke about how rude Martin is to them because of their relationships with Jon. Martin effectively burned his friendship with Tim by acting like a mediator while showing obvious bias. He's such a dick, which I find really funny and apparently no one else does.

“He’s rude to people who don’t get along with Jon, to people who get along with Jon too well, and also to Jon himself” dear GOD you’re so right. It’s like he’s simultaneously insecure and egocentric.

From what I’ve gathered, this is caused by most fans seeing themselves in Martin. Most of their time is spent piling their own personality traits onto the man, instead of trying to understand him as he is.

The fact people prefer the popularized fanon version also adds to this. In fanon he’s a loving, caring, protective sweetheart. His biggest flaws are that he hates himself and loves too much; both perfectly harmless and relatable. There’s nothing that might make him seem unredeemable, his every trait is perfectly innocent and excusable. Sweet gay tormented blorbo.

Martin isn’t the only one who fell victim to the fandom oversimplification to be honest. Jon’s either the mean stubborn idiot or a soft and helpless gayboy who needs his boyfriend to care for him. Tim is the comic relief funny guy who’s only there to goof, and Sasha is the smart one who’s also secretly a prankster. Daisy is the Bad Cop violent butch and Basira is the Good Cop cool-and-collected hijabi. Elias is the flamboyant evil boss and Peter Lukas is his bitter sugar daddy do you see it do you see what I mean. That’s the fandom making them more digestible and versatile so that they can fit them into fanfiction tropes. This is a common occurence in every fandom but it’s sooo prominent here and dear god I hate it. Downsides of a fandom peaking in 2021

Is it just me or are “the chosen one is simply that - the person I chose” and “Ceaseless Watcher’s special little boy” mutually exclusive?

the traits people project on martin could fit shelley better because we dont get much of him and it woudnt be mischaracterisation because we dont know much about him for it to be mischaracterisation

but just dont do the babying part on him I will peel my skin off

if I see any characters being treated like babies I will do 10000002729181918181 back flips off a goddamn cliff in mid air don't ask how I'm doing back flips in the air I don't know either I'll figure it out

Good luck doing back flips you’re gonna have to do a lot of them

You’re right, Michael Shelley is the best vessel for projection because he’s just not really present in the story. We learned what happened to him, but we never learned what he is like. You can make him into anyone.

But that’s also why nearly no one does it - it’s infinitely easier to warp the personality of an already defined character (Martin) than to write one for a character yourself (Michael)

A mr Beast themed drag queen named Missus Breast

I hate hate hate how the fandom oversimplification did not only affect the characters, but also the Fears themselves. The Eye is being a stalker and a nerd. The Lonely is being quiet and antisocial. The Slaughter is anger issues. The Desolation is arson. The Hunt is being feral. The Stranger is uncanny valley. The Web is spiders and lying. Etc etc.

The whole point is that these fears cannot be fully and separately defined. I understand that having objects and motifs you can tie to a Fear makes it more marketable and allows you to cover your clothes with eyes and spiders and stuff to show you are A Fan. But the whole point is everyone experiences fear differently and the entities are intertwined, and I loved that. It made the whole thing interesting.

This fandom is allergic to critical thinking and analysis. Fanfic tropes can be a substitute for everything apparently

martinblackwoodhaterfan:

Is it just me or are “the chosen one is simply that - the person I chose” and “Ceaseless Watcher’s special little boy” mutually exclusive?

There was something terrifying in that - the fact that Jon endured all that suffering not because he was special, but simply because he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. That all of it was just a game of chance. That it could’ve happenned to any other person in the same position. That all it took for him to be subjected to this horror was to apply for the wrong job. That’s it.

Turning him into the Chosen One makes it far less scary. It was always going to happen, so why feel bad about it? Better to just let it go. It was inevitable.

the doing back flips in mid air while I fall of a cliff anon here I am also doorway anon

i LOVED tma fandom and still kinda do but it's complicated there are so many shitty things in it why are people scared of drawing characters WITH NO CANON DESCRIPTION differently than canon

"thats not my (insert character name!" THERE IS NO (INSERT CHARACTER NAME)!!! THERE IS NO CANON LOOK FOR THEM!!! "oh but the fandom already decided!!! THEY SHOULD DRAW THE CHARACTER THE WAY WE EXPECT IT!!!" the artist is not drawing FOR YOU. SHUT IT. unless you commission them to draw a character with no canon description a certain harmless way you have no say in it

the fandom is a prison

Oh my god so TRUE!! It’s genuinely awful.

I get it, those are characters with no canon appearances so you can assign whatever traits you want to them, but don’t get mad when others don’t adhere to YOUR headcanons! A majority of fandom having the same opinion doesn’t make it the only valid option. It’s still just a headcanon. It’s only canon in your head brother

TMA fandom is all for assigning headcanons to a character until they don’t align with fanon. “That’s not my blorbo” babydoll your blorbo is an MP3 file. Have some imagination.

I feel like headcanoning Sasha as black and making NotSasha white takes away a large part of horror of the whole situation, especially with how it’s treated by the fandom: made into a joke and laughed off.

I’ve always seen it like this: The terrifying part is not that someone you knew got replaced by an entirely different person. It’s that the new person is Not Them. They are wrong in a thousand little ways. Their face is round where before it was angular. Their front teeth are now straight where they used to be crooked. They no longer have the little mole near their chin. All the little quirks that made a person themselves, that made them unique and special to you - gone.

I understand that it would be different depending on the kind of relationship you had with the person who got replaced. But making it into “the person you knew is gone and there’s this rando there instead” is misunderstanding how this is meant to be scary. Especially since fans do it just to laugh it off as the NotThem being racist. Everyone’s forgetting how terrifying suddenly not recognizing someone you knew would be. It is that deep actually

I also think that it’s icky, but I can’t quite put my finger on it and am in no position to judge that

Change in profile picture? Are you no longer the number one martinbalckwoodhater fan?

Let’s be real. Jon could’ve NOT performed the surgery he did on Melanie and let her choose to not have the bullet removed and once she was past the point of no return everyone would’ve blamed him for any blood on her hands. Tell me I’m wrong. CAUSE YOU CAN’T. Jon could’ve made all the ‘morally correct’ choices and they STILL would’ve treated him like scum. Hell, I bet if he hadn’t been consigned to the Eye and wasn’t beholden to the Beholding, they would’ve blamed him for everything anyway. Talk about ASKED FOR IT, he could’ve been a gray rock and everyone would’ve taken turns at him with a chisel.

Still a Martin hater??

The Fears. Are parasites.

Any questions?

Oh yeeaahh.. this is why it pisses me off when fans assign the fears to themselves based off of which “aesthetic” their appearance aligns with the most. Like I know you’re having fun but could you stop playing with your dollies for a moment and put on your thinking cap. The whole point is that You Would Not Like It. The fear is not there to serve you as a silly wacky superpower you are there to feed it

Unpopular opinion time: the tendency of tma fans to flock to posts unrelated to the magnus archives only serves to simplify the themes of the podcast to the point of it being unrecognizable and get rid of any deeper meaning that might’ve once been there

manueladominguezliker:

Sorry for pointing out how the podcast explicitly states that Jon should’ve stayed dead and was evil for not staying dead or at the very least commit suicide so as to not continue to cause other suffering. It will happen again and again and again and again.

Time Travel AU where Jon doesn’t try to make amends with people while attempting to circumvent the apocalypse. Where instead he loses the last drop of hope he had and changes exactly nothing… kind of. Where he doesn’t bother assigning them research because it was pointless to begin with. Where doing this doesn’t stop him from being marked, because he already was, but Jonah doesn’t fully understand that. Where his apathy at everything and everyone, especially in regard to the archives, make the OG assistants concerned. Where, when he’s confronted by this, he blows smoke in their faces and tells them to bring it up with ‘Elias’. Where he and Jonah play chicken about their knowing the truth. Where Jonah can’t even gloat at having a ‘willing participant’, because it was always about breaking and subjugating Jon to his will. Where Jon still reads the true statements because he’s still dependent on them and they’re the only thing that makes him feel anything anymore. Where, as things get closer and closer to the archives, because Jonah has to start forcing the marks, the OG assistants confront Jon again. Where Jon is finally forced to admit that, to him, they’re ALL already walking corpses. Even him. Where he lays everything out before them, including how to quit, and tells them they can do whatever the fuck they want with the information. Where the smell of smoke clings to him from cigarette after cigarette after cigarette. Where they do what they do and abandon him. Where, when it all comes to the end, he dances every step he’s told and releases the fears like the good puppet he is. And the cycle starts anew.

any strong opinions on jonelias or mr magnus in general

Jonelias could’ve been absolutely delicious. Such a shame that the fandom peaked in 2020-21 and the ship was brushed off as bad because “it’s toxic”.

As for Elias/Jonah, he was one of the only characters that I actually liked, mostly because he had an intriguing and pleasant manner of speaking. Charming. And he was a really interesting guy - since we, as the audience, saw him from Jon’s perspective he was painted as a villain, but he was really just doing what everyone else in his situation would’ve done and he was aware of it. He wasn’t really evil, at least not in that cartoony sense like everyone likes to portray him, but god was he curious. And a control freak.

Him and Jon would complete eachother in the most gruesome of ways. The creator and his creation. Jon both dehumanized and worshipped. Him hating Elias yet desiring his approval. We really could’ve had it all. But no, he was killed in one single swipe and Jon got to be badass for like three minutes despite it going against the very nature of his relationship with Elias as was previously shown and instead we got two bland gays Somewhere Else™. How tragic

i-will-change-this-someday:

You know, as much as I find the “Jon puts his whole heart into the statement and then calls it fake” posts funny. I feel like everyone forgets that there are, in fact, a lot of fake statements.

When Martin yells at Jon for “Pushing the sceptic thing so hard” we’re inclined to agree with him, but that’s only because we only hear the real statements. Martin would likely be hearing Jon record all the statements, and for most of them, Jon’s gonna be right, cause they are fake.

“I still think most of the statements down here aren’t real. Of the hundreds I’ve recorded, we’ve had maybe… thirty, forty that are… that go on tape. Now, those, I believe, at least for the most part.”

Hundreds. Jon has recorded hundreds of statements between, at least, January 13th (Naomi Herne’s statement) to July 29th (the infestation) and only 38 of them were real. (33, that were written statements already in the archives)
