- cigarettes: a representation of addiction in general. Something you start doing out of your own free will, and it feels good at first so you keep doing it. But the longer it goes on it becomes a compulsion, someting involuntary. And it's starting to affect you negatively and getting more and more out of hand, making you question whether you even had control over it in the first place. But you did choose this, you made the decision to start, and it feels good, or at least it felt good in the beginning, and maybe you even want to stop. After all, there is nothing preventing you from quitting, you're doing this because you want to, and surely just one more time won't hurt

- weed: cause u get high like fear of heights an aspect of the vast get it

- vapes: what if when peter lukas vanished he didn't disappear into the fog and instead he actually took a fat hit of his vape and hid behind the smoke

I think what made people feel the need to create "new" fear categories that the Smirke's fourteen "missed" was the fact that they themselves narrowed the original categories down to just a few (mostly aesthetic) traits. "I came up with a New and Completely Separate fear that doesn't fit in Smirke's fourteen" open your mindddd Smirke's categorization is just a collection of colorful umbrella terms you can fit whatever you want under there

Additionally the categories aren't even able to exist in a manner that completely separates one fear from another. They not only can but NEED to be mixed

Let's say, hypothetically, that Martin really did love Jon. How interesting that would be then, to have a man look at his beloved, notice all the traits he passionately despises and considers them morally wrong, and keep loving him anyway. Seeing past the morally dubious parts of him and straight into the person Jon truly is, under all the traits that were forced onto him against his own will. This could've been really beautiful and heartwarming if they actually had any meaningful conversations in canon aside from either arguing or bantering. Whatever my point is you don't have to add random traits to Martin to make their relationship unique or enticing. You don't have to ignore canon you don't have to fit jmart into the "monster x monsterfucker" box I'm begging you stop doing that and use what's already there please

Thinking about how Martin’s status as an Avatar is wholly separate from himself. I’m directly talking about Also Martin. How, in order to show both Martin’s domain AND keep him the ‘human’ to Jon’s ‘monster’ they literally made another him. When we have no other indication that it was something other Avatars of any type did. And is pretty fucking antithetical to the Lonely as a concept. Martin completely denied the fact that he also perpetuated trauma and could CONTINUE TO DO SO because the one causing the trauma was physically an entirely different being.

Meanwhile Jon was literally puppetted as an eight year old and his paranoia at possibly having his autonomy taken from him AGAIN as an adult was laughed at and a sign of him deflecting blame.

There's this misconception that in s5 Martin was bloodthirsty and wanted to kill. No, he didn't. He just wanted these people dead. He didn't want to do the killing himself. He used Jon to kill for him, so that he wouldn't have to feel guilty about it. And I'm sure that if he was the one with the power to kill, he wouldn't have been as eager to abuse it. i'll try to make this as coherent as i can. let's begin.

i knew that they were going to be together, but when i actually listened to the podcast, their relationship seemed so unrealistic to me. maybe it's my aroace (demi aro?) ass speaking, but they literally went from

Jon doesn't like Martin, Martin has a crush on him -> Jon is paranoid that Martin wants to kill him, Martin still has a crush on him -> Jon is on the run after brutal pipe murder, Martin thinks that Jon brutally pipe murdered someone -> Jon is in a coma, they don't interact for 6 months -> Jon wakes up from the coma, suddenly caring about Martin more than about anyone else, Martin is isolating -> AND SUDDENLY THEY'RE A COUPLE???

again, maybe it's my aromanticism speaking, but how can an office crush evolve into love? especially that they weren't friends before? maybe i missed something, but i never noticed any major bonding moment, maybe except when Jane Prentiss attacked, but after the attack Jon was super paranoid and didn't trust anyone. he stopped hating on Martin but that's all. so the shift in s4, when Jon randomly started caring for Martin felt so random? the whole "let's gouge out our eyes and run away"? i just can't get it.

additionaly, and this is my opinion only, they had absolutely no chemistry. no history. i don't really ship jontim, but i'll use them as a counterpoint. because Jon and Tim had history, had drama, they were friends, they both were traumatised by the fears, they both came to the institute with a purpose, they couldn't trust eachother anymore, they hated eachother, they died together. that pairing has substance, meanwhile Jon and Martin don't really have anything in common. no shared interests, nothing. and dare i say that Jon and Gerry, in their 30 min conversation, had more chemistry than Jon and Martin in all the 5 seasons.

their relationship dynamic COULD'VE been interesting if some things (that i'll list) were acknowledged and adressed:

the majority of the fandom portrays them as this "uwu cute couple" which they're NOT.

Martin doesn't love (if this can be called love) Jon. Martin loves the human version of Jon that no longer exist. he has a problem with Jon using his archivist powers (the others also hate Jon for that, but yk, the others barely like him), EXCEPT for when it's useful (killing avatars)

Martin calls the other avatars "monsters", meanwhile Jon is literally one of them. he is no longer human. IN FACT Martin also isn't fully human, but he chose to ignore it and live in denial, while encouraging Jon to kill people that are like him because in his view they are inherently evil (when in reality most of them didn't ask for that, for example Oliver Banks).

Martin is constantly annoyed with Jon making statements (he even punched him, there's no excuse for that). ik that the apocalypse is a stressful sutuation, but Jon needs them to survive.

this kind of a relationship, with one person loving a no longer existing version of the other, while hating the kind of people that his loved one now is, and the other person being with the first because they want anyone to care about them even a little bit, could be very interesting, IF ADRESSED IN THE WRITING.

but instead they were made into this cutesy couple and didn't have any serious conversation about their relationship.

i'm ending the rambling now, i'll add things if i remember anything else.

Since it's very popular to arrange the Fears into the colour wheel, and the podcast itself uses a colour wheel metaphor to describe the way they function, does that mean certain Fears cancel each other out? I don't mean it in a "rivalry" sense, more like... say you fell victim to the Eye, and in order to escape it you lock yourself in a pitch black room. Or you fell victim to the Buried, so you decide to go on a very long cruise or something.

Could you become a servant of one Fear by escaping another? Theoretically you would still be afraid - afraid that once you "let go" of one entity, the other one will get you. Kind of like with Salesa's camera (was it a camera?) that he used to hide himself from the apocalypse. Could it work that way? Or is the source of the fear more important?

THIS ACTUALLY. One of the dearest things to me about Jon (because oh how relatable 💔) is how much he interprets everything about himself as weak or shameful. TMA demands our empathy to figure out that you can’t take what this man says at face value. It demands the kind of empathy you should be exercising IRL when faced with similarly depressed and traumatized, negative-self talking, unreliable narrators.

Engaging with TMA is an exercise in understanding trauma and what it does to a person (and that’s so deeply intentional on Jonny’s part) and that may be the number one reason why I love it so much.
