Sorry. This is a semimonthly post at this point, but I’m still not over the fact that a story that could’ve been a fascinating exploration of how people react to fear in vastly different ways, shifting blames or clinging to normalcy or stepping over everyone else trying to claw their ways into some semblance of control, ended up doing barely anything with those themes for the sake of, uh, cute podcast gays, I guess.
You know I do like the TMA we got, it was pretty alright if definitely imperfect.
…But yeah. To be honest I am far more interested in the idea of what it would mean to 1. Live in a world where the Fears exist and 2. The implications of what being an avatar might mean, the questions of what makes a human being human and how different are “humans” and “monsters” anyway. (One of my favorite things in this series is actually how Elias refuses to define what being human means, which I find just. So interesting. But that’s a different post lol.)
I mean I get why people would like JonMartin, but to me shipping Jon with anyone, especially after S3, is almost necessarily toxic. My problem is that the “cute podcast gays” everyone sees don’t seem to really exist - they’re trauma-bonded to each other in a way that is honestly distinctly unhealthy no matter how much it’s dressed up with good cows.
Anyway. I would have liked less (at least blatant) romance and more focus on the worldbuilding implications here. It would have helped the later seasons especially IMO.
