The Magnus Archives (Season One) Production Design Project

A line-up of the main six characters of season one of The Magnus Archives. Each character is paired with their name/signature. On the left is Jane Prentiss, a pale woman with leathery, sunken skin and long, dark, tangled hair. She wears a tattered red dress and is covered with worms. Next is Jonathan Sims, a short Indian man with medium length, curly gray hair. He wears a sweater, suit jacket, and plaid pants in different shades of green. Next to Jonathan is Martin Blackwood. Martin is a larger, rounder man, with spiky red hair and stubble. He wears a blue sweater, khakis, and glasses. Next is Sasha James, a black woman with dark red locs. She's dressed in pink, with a cardigan, long plaid skirt, and white turtleneck. To Sasha's right is Timothy Stoker, a tall white man with blond hair. He wears a white dress shirt, rolled up, a teal tie, and suit pants. The final person on the right is Elias Bouchard. Elias is a thin, older man, dressed in a purple suit. He has slicked back gray hair and rectangular glasses. ALT
A digital drawing of Jonathan Sim's office from The Magnus Archives. The office is small and square, with dark green bookshelves lining every side of the room. The shelves are disorganized, making the room feel messy and cramped. On the right wall is a wooden desk inserted into the shelves. It is small, covered in papers and folders, with a green lamp lighting the desk. The floor of the office is a darker shade of wood. The floor is covered with loose documents and a green and yellow rug with eye motifs on it. In the center of the room is a wooden table with another green lamp and even more loose papers. On one side of it is a uncomfortable wooden chair and on the opposite side is a standard metal chair. The whole room is deceivingly cozy. It looks inviting but is extremely cramped and uncomfortable. A set of objects from The Magnus Archives. On the top left are two books. The first, Ex Altiora, is a 1800s leather bound book. It is blue with a gold engraving of mountains and a tower on the front. On the right is a black paperback book with "The Boneturner's Tale" in white serif font written on it. A long white bone is drawn on the bottom of the cover, and the book is slightly torn. Next is a white clown doll, with a pointed hate, purple polka dotted suit, and red lips. The final object on the front is a blue Ming vase, with a mix of curved and straight lines on the front. it curves in the middle, giving an hourglass shape. Below Ex Altiora is an apple. The first drawing shows the apple uncut, with a slight smile marked into it. The second apple is cut in half, with a smile made of teeth in the center. Next is a brown paper box with a severed finger resting inside of it, addressed to a man named Lee Rentoul. The final object is at the bottom, a black garbage bag with a green bow. We see the interior of the bag, filled with packing peanuts and an anatomical, copper heart with "Alan Parfitt" engraved into it.ALT

Hello everyone! Let me introduce myself- I’m Tilda (or Tilde), and I’m want to be a production designer.

Production designers create the overall look of a piece of media. From costumes, lighting, environments, props, etc., these designers make sure that everything looks cohesive and sets the mood.

So, I thought it would be fun to put my skills to the test by designing season one of The Magnus Archives. My winter break started as soon as I became interested in the show. Needless to say, a new obsession and an abundance of free time go well together.

You may have seen these illustrations posted separately, this is a master post of the whole project. My thoughts, processes, and critiques are all included under the cut. If you read them, I hope you enjoy! If, not, thank you for supporting my work regardless.
