thinking so much about how jon and martin are so far from soulmates and yet fought and clawed and suffered to be with each other anyways. they weren’t predestined, they were determination.
God, it is just so important to me that they not be destined for each other. It’s just so much better.
I could gush about it from the perspective of someone that’s been in a relationship for ages, and the work it takes to maintain relationships at every stage of it, but I actually have a different thought I wanna indulge for a second.
Getting back on my “The Web is a metaphor for the writer” kick, sometimes when you’re writing characters just kinda do shit you don’t expect. That’s how it is for me, anyway. You have the basic plot beats down to paper, but it’s the little choices you make as a writer that will eventually lead you down a path of “actually, something else needs to happen”.
Those little choices inform the character and as a writer it’s partly on us to listen to them and do what makes the most sense for how they’ve acted prior. This is especially challenging for serialized content, like fanfic and weekly released podcasts.
The Web (Jonny) had a plan for Martin. Left him breadcrumbs to lead him down the path it wanted. But he made different choices, as did Jon, and as did the people around them. Not giant ones, the basic plot beats still came to pass as far as we can see, but all those tiny choices add up. And those choices inevitably made it clear to the writer that they had gotten too close for Annabelle’s original plan to work.
They both made choices, and not even always ones that forced them closer together. And as a writer, when you reach that pivotol moment you’ve been planning for and really examine your characters to figure out how to make it happen, sometimes you realize it is fucking awkward. It feels forced, wrong. Jon wouldn’t allow this to happen because look at all he’s done before. Martin wouldn’t allow this to happen because look at where he’s fallen. It didn’t work, so the narrative was flexible. It accommodated their love to the point it told an entirely different story that was planned from the beginning, even if the worst still came to pass.
Basically what I’m saying is these two idiots are so stubborn and in love they metatextually said fuck you to Jonny Sims and shaped their own fates. Not in a way that changed how things ended, but in the ways that matter. And I love them for that.
Even if they fight my ass too whenever I write them, my god they are fucking stubborn.
