I sometimes see fanfic writers struggling with lonelyeyes divorces in their writing and how to make it work - how could they really get married before gay marriage was legalized. Are they only pretending and playing on marriage or something like that…?
And I have easy solution for that! Magnus archives is obviously taking place on parallel universe to ours since, you know, there exists all those supernatural creatures and monsters. On that account in the world where ghosts, vampires, fear entities and lots of other stuff exists… Is it that unbelievable that gay married could be legalized let’s say twenty years sooner? Like really what’s more plausible? Jonny never denied this therefore gay marriage in England let’s say since 90’ is cannon compliant. Therefore our favorite evil husbands are legally multidivorced case closed!
There is actual proof of that in canon that for some reason is never referenced!
Remember infamous homophobic vase, episode 38? It featured statement giver’s marriage certificate and it took place in 2012, so gay marriage was leagal in Magnus Archives UK at that time at least and probably even earlier.

I went back to that episode so if anyone wants to see clear proof they don’t have to look for it:
Act which allows same sex marriage in England and Wales was passed by UK parliament in July 2013 and came in force on 13 March 2014.
The fact that it’s marriage license is even clearly stated so it wasn’t just Civil partnership (which was legalized in UK in 2005).
So yeah, gay marriage is legal in the UK in l mag universe since at least 2012 but probably longer.
